One thing you didn't mention (though it may only work in bedrock), is that if you create a map in the overworld and then go to the nether the locator will turn red, and it actually shows your corresponding location in the overworld.

One thing I like to do, is if I'm filling out a very zoomed out map (1/8 or 1/16), I make the map, and then make a copy and stick the copy in a safe place like my base or an ender chest. That way if, while I'm out exploring and filling up the map, something... untoward... happens, I don't have to worry about losing all my hard work since, as you fill a map, all copies of it are updated as well. Especially nice if you're not using an elytra and are actually hoofing it to fill out the map (literally or figuratively). You never know when you might fall into a random stealth hole or run into a stray creeper or misjudge just how high that cliff actually was. I don't really play on multi-player, but I think it would also look rather nice to have a big wall of zoomed out maps in a central location where everyone else can track exploration progress in real-time.

What I've been doing on bedrock (survival) is filling out maps of the world, using only fully expanded maps) filling out maps of the world, and naming them relative to the starting map (Home) as North, Far West, East by Southeast, etc. I haven't scouted any farther than two maps past the first one yet, but I'll use a similar naming system to keep them organized. Since I want to keep using this same world forever, and I'm just trying to unwind with my kid, I have cheats on to keep our inventory, and I've started a spreadsheet listing the coordinates of our bases and other interesting locations for us to teleport to quickly, and occasionally change the time of day or weather as needed. This relaxed approach has made things so much more enjoyable! One of the most helpful habits I've picked up is holding my current map in my hand where you can see my position on it (and I always have the game set to show coordinates), and taking a screenshot of something for quick reference later, that way I can tp back when I'm ready, and I can tell what direction I was looking, too.

I must say that map making is one of the coolest things that you can do in Minecraft! No matter the scale really, but once you start getting a lot of maps together and you visualize your surroundings from different perspective is so satisfying! I personally do those max zoomed maps and fill the "you are here" billboard map with like 5x5 with those zoomed maps, marking all points of interest with banners along the way. It's a lot of work but definitely worth it to see the results!

11:25 The glow item frames don't really emit light, just appear to be brighter, so even with a glow item frame, it will still be a good idea to make sure the places with the map is bright enough to avoid dealing with all hostile mobs
@sm00thgames63
@sm00thgames63 3 ай бұрын
The main point is to be able to see the map at night, if you set it up outside even if the area is lit up monsters could spawn near where light doesn't reach and still mess it up. So preferably enclose it within a structure or just put glass around it.

Hope what I'm about to describe helps others... I have a map naming convention that I use to help me keep track of how all the maps connect together. *Level 4/4 Maps* First you start off by naming a 4/4 zoom level map of World Spawn "0,0Z4" using an anvil. The first zero indicates the X position (West/East) in the world and the second one indicates the Y position (North/South). The Z4 indicates the zoom level. If the map has an important feature, I may at times also add it to the name as "0,0Z4: World Spawn". For other maps, I use negative numbers on the X position indicator as I go further West of World Spawn and positive numbers as I go East. For the Y position indicator, I use negative numbers as I go South and positive numbers as I go North. So, if I want to make a map directly North of World Spawn, I name it "0,1Z4", and directly North of that one is "0,2Z4". Directly West of World Spawn is "-1,0Z4", followed by "-2,0Z4". So now, using this naming convention, if you go four maps South of World Spawn and 7 East, the map name would be "-4,7Z4". *Level 3/4 Maps* For 3/4 zoom level maps, I name them "0,0Z3TL". The first two numbers indicate the X/Y of where the map falls in relation to a zoom 4/4 map. The "Z3" indicates it is a zoom 3/4 map. The "TL" indicates the position it falls within the 4/4 zoom map. The first letter can be a "T" or "B" meaning Top or Bottom respectively. The second letter can be an "L" or "R" for Left or Right. So, the four 3/4 zoom level maps that fall within the 4/4 zoom level map of World Spawn, going clockwise, starting at the top left, are named: "0,0Z3TL", "0,0Z3TR", "0,0Z3BR", and "0,0Z3BL". *All Other Levels* As far as I'm concerned, 2/4 and 1/4 zoom level maps are not that useful, so I don't care to use or name such maps. I do find 0/4 zoom level maps very useful for locating positions from the Nether to the Over World when connecting portals, but I never keep those maps after they have served their purpose. So, no need to name them. *Alternative Naming Convention* An alternative naming convention that follows a similar pattern, that can be used for naming maps across all zoom level, is as follows. Use the same method as described before for the X/Y position indicator and map zoom level. Then change the Top/Bottom/Left/Right position indicator for the 3/4 maps to an A/B/C/D position indicator. So, in a clockwise order, starting at the Top Left position; the Top Left 3/4 zoom map in World Spawn would be "0,0Z3A"; Top Right would be "0,0Z3B"; Bottom Right "0,0Z3C"; Bottom Left "0,0Z3D". For 2/4 zoom level maps, just add another letter indicating the position within the 3/4 zoom level map it falls in. So the Top Right 2/4 map, of a Bottom Right 3/4 map, of a 4/4 map that is one map West and two maps South of World Spawn is named "-1,-2Z2CB". For 1/4 zoom level maps, you add another letter following the same clockwise pattern as so: "5,-3Z1ADD" For 0/4 zoom level maps, you again add another letter: "0,-11Z0BCCD" This naming convention only uses one character to indicate the zoom level 3/4 to 0/4 positions where the previous naming convention uses two. The drawback for the A/B/C/D position indicator is that you need to remember that it is in a clockwise position starting at the Top Left. The T/R/B/L position indicator I use is much clearer, but needs two characters and doesn't support zoom levels below 3/4. *A Different Variation* Another way to write it, but still following the above rules and patterns is to swap the X/Y and zoom indicators. So, "0,0Z3TL" would be "3Z0,0TL" or "5,-14Z1CBB" would be "1Z5,-14CBB". You would have to move the Z of the zoom indicator to the back to have a natural separator before the X/Y number. This naming convention is for someone who is bothered by the zoom level separating two position indicators as it falls between the XY position indicator and the T/R/B/L or A/B/C/D position indicators. It doesn't bother me as I think of the X/Y position indicator and zoom level as being one unit. This is also the pattern I started with, so I'm just used to it now. It also looks better to me for some reason. *Why This Pattern?* To create a naming convention, I wanted the pattern to be as small as possible and still relatively easy to understand. This meant trying to separate information without using too many extra characters like commas (,), dashes (-), slashes (/), or pipes (|). So I tried to use the switch from numbers and letters to naturally separate pieces of information. The only extra character I ended up having to use was a comma. I needed the comma to separate the two X/Y coordinate numbers. I could have use an X/Y in the indicator, but that would add one more character and we are used to using a comma to separate lat/long and X/Y coordinates in real world location systems ("X-3Y4Z3TR" instead of "-3,4Z3TR"). I then used the Z as a natural separator for zoom. After the number portion of the zoom level indicator, you have another natural separator with the position letters of either T/R/B/L or A/B/C/D, depending on the system used. For the A/B/C/D pattern, the remaining zoom levels use the same position letters but they are naturally separated by the fact that each position uses only one letter, so there isn't any confusion. Again, hope this helps and let me know what you think and if you even understand it. Lol

You can 'marker and name' maps in bedrock, you need to frame a locator map and name it, then leave it at the location and it shows the green or white arrow. I do this all the time for certain locations or somewhere I want to return, like villages, dungeons or even Coral reefs. And the arrow is smaller than banners and doesn't cover too much terrain on the map.

For labeling megamaps I always label my center as C (like where my base is) then label them N, S, E, W from there. Once I go beyond that I label NN, NNW, NNEE etc. This is super useful for megamaps at larger scales like 3/4 or 4/4.

This video was helpful, but i honestly didn't understand much. I just zoomed out my starting map in a world in bedrock edition, and now it's harder to see where my home and places of interest are.

The monotone is top tier. My chemistry teacher and this guy would be best friends and a simple hello greeting would take probably 5 full minutes. Helpful info, just a painful style of info relay to stay engaged with.

I would suggest that, if you want to make a mega map, digging out 1 layer down for the area you want your map to cover (so, if your mega map takes up a 5x5 grid, make a 1 block deep 5x5 hole), filling out the hole with open fence gates, and then placing the item frames and maps on top of the fence gates. The open fence gates will let you jump into the hole so you can get a good look at the map

@@MD5Gaming For our sin, breaking God’s law, we are punished by burning in Hell for eternity, a place with no hope for our salvation. But God loved you, along with everyone else, so much and with all his heart that he gave his only Son, Jesus Christ, to this cursed world to be crucified on the cross. Now whosoever accepts Jesus Christ, God’s Son, as their Lord and Savior and believes he rose from the dead the third day will be saved from eternal damnation in Hell and live in Heaven in paradise with him forever. Many will choose to follow Satan as you are doing but he will soon reveal himself as a murderer and a liar as he was since the beginning and he will curse all his followers as he cursed God and all his followers will be cased into ever burning Hell. Repent of your sins and accept the Lord Jesus Christ or face God’s righteous judgment.

I miss how years ago when MC first hit PS3/Xbox consoles the map was simple, you hold it and slowly fills up as you move around then you would right click or something with it to toggle between zoom levels up to seeing the whole world or back to local more detailed smaller size.

Heeey, I asked for a tutorial on this recently and you really did it! I gotta say that was actually very helpful (as always). The info on scaling/locking the map was super useful and also I didn't know Java had a cool feature with the banners like that. Wish Bedrock did too, that would be super cool... and of course this is an amazing guide into the mega map! Awesome job :D

I've played this for about 10 years on and off. At first this game alone is a lot to soak in but ive had help from friends, my kids and youtube. This game is awesome but needs a little more direction as far as where to maybe go and for a few more of the rare blocks

I've been creating truly giant mega-maps using the top level 2048x2048 maps, which really takes a lot of time to do. Generally I like to just fly around in creative mode just to fill out the maps, then go back to certain areas in survival. Just wish there was a way to add banner waypoints on Xbox, or that there was a zoom option.

Didn't learn anything on that one, but still useful for new players ^_^ Btw if you play on bedrock, and you want to copy a locator map, you can use standard ( not locator ) maps. It will still make a locator map copy ( it spares some redstone and iron for the same result ) - it may be obvious, but when i started i didn't know it and it wasn't obvious for me xD

In Bedrock, you can add a compass to a non-locater map to make it one. You can also see where every player is on a locater whether or not they've ever had a map.
