As a bedrock player, this has been a thing for years. Sites like mcpedl have had thousands of free addons and texture packs for years that you can download for free and add to any world. The difference is that it was easy to download on mobile and for computer players but not for console players. The difference Mojang is making is bringing more awareness to addons, monetizing them on the market place, and making it easy to download for console players.

This needs to be the top comment. This isn't a new feature, it just makes purchasable add-ons separate from the map it comes with (this should have been done years ago). Also, you can even learn to make your own add-ons with the help of online tutorials from Microsoft or wherever else.

I have played bedrock edition for a good 3-4 years now (actually switched over from Java), and I make addons for fun myself. Just want to make a few things clear here: Addons have existed on bedrock for a while now- since 1.10 or earlier, even! They’ve steadily gotten better over the years, and with the recent addition of Script API in that environment, they can only get better. Addons are currently free, and can be downloaded by PC & mobile players on sites like MCPEDL. They’re made by community members, and anyone with a device can make them for themselves. The addons available on marketplace are made by professional teams and are a paid product, whereas the ones online are free and made by hobbyists. They’re two completely different environments and offer two very distinct styles of addons.

This is huge for console players, not so much for PC players. Add-ons have been around for a long time, but on 3rd party website filled with ads and possible malware. Xbox used to have a file exploration system so it was a bit of effort making those work in game. I used to play on console and I've checked out the marketplace but the biggest bummer was all the cool things you could buy were tied to a world download and were very limiting. Uncoupling add-ons from the world download *instantly* increases the value of everything in the marketplace.

Speaking as a (very very new) Bedrock content creator that writes some of my own amateur addons to use in my videos, I'm glad to hear this. The problem with Bedrock addons has been that pretty much everything breaks any time there's a minor version update, like 1.20.0 to 1.20.1. The more pro-level addon creators like FoxyNoTail complain that they have to fix their addons several times a year and can barely get any work done. If Mojang is allowing addons unattached to a world, it may mean that things are stable enough that most addons might only need minimal maintenance, unless it's something like the new Javascript features.

@@RealValkorit's a common experience and we're already playing catch up with every update anyway since you can't be guaranteed what worked on previews will be what is actually released so it's do we work on what is currently stable or build for the preview and potentially run into extra issues? I had to completely redo my world gen after the deep dark was added again after Caves and Cliffs had already required significant alterations. And sometimes there's just stuff with vanilla that is buggy which causes us additional headaches because we're blamed for behaviour the core team broke, ie not being able to use/interact with things reliably on worlds was a Bedrock bug last year that made it harder to debug if something was wrong with our work and definitely add-ons got blamed for behaviour that wasn't entirely their devs' fault. *sighs*

Imo this won't really affect Java modded. Modded devs have a hard enough time making fabric ports and different versions ports on forge that adding the effort to learn an entirely new system of add-ons is simply an effort many won't go though. Tried them out. The installation process was a bit more involved. On Java with the various mod launchers, you pick a pack or mod, and it'll download and set it up. With this, I had to "Buy/get(free)", then go thru a separate process to actually download it. (You also need to enable it per world, but I don't count that against it as we have to do the same with datapacks). As for the addon content... the ice pick thing is kind of neat, but it's shown a LOT of the limitations of Bedrock's addons. Honestly, I'm more intrigued about news from the end of last year from Fabric, that Mojang's Java team had added Block Codecs during one of the 1.20.x snapshots.... the first step on moving blocks from being "hard coded", to a data driven (definable by JSON in datapacks) resource... Blocks need textures, we've seen the integration of data and textures with the custom armour trims. The dream started by Spoutcraft... may let live.

Ex-mapmaker here. If you're looking forward to buying these Add-Ons, you should know that many Marketplace creators do it for the money (not to mention the technical/creative limits you have on Bedrock). Many have little to no passion for what they're doing and this usually reflects the quality of the Add-Ons. There still is some amazing stuff you can find (usually from bigger teams coming from Java) but the better quality and passion for creations in Java Edition still remains.

at least people are less likely to get scammed now. There was content advertised on there to work on any world, so it was the one feature plus the bare minimum of a spawn build to pass review. Emerald armor, x-ray, mini blocks, furniture, etc are examples I seen people get upset after spending real money on with no chance of refund. Additionally due to bedrock's DRM (unlike java), it not possible to export the datapacks/mod/feature with the game files.

Not to mention there a very few free bedrock addons on the marketplace propper. *[Scratches back of head]* There are very few addons on bedrock that I would ever consider better than most mods on Java. My hope is that Mojang will eventually add more capabilities with Add-Ons, but given that this hasn't changed much in years I dont see it as likely to change. If anything this feels like a money grab on Mojang's part. Trying to get a bunch of kids addicted to buying addons they most likely wont help foster the growth of anytime soon. Who knows though. Two things: This whole add-ons thing is a disgusting move by Mojang. I'm not mad about the fact that mods are accessible (or even that they're profitable) on Bedrock, because of course that's awesome; I'm infuriated that they would make these a PAID, FIRST-PARTY FEATURE, then turn around and explicitly state in their terms that Java mods are FORBIDDEN from being paid products in exactly the same way. I don't understand why Mojang seemingly hates their Java creators so much. We've been given absolutely nothing, and we've just had to be thankful that we're at least allowed to make mods at all. Second, I really, really hope that Mojang holds these people accountable when they copy Java mods for Bedrock without the creator's permission. That whole scandal with the Aether mod will certainly not be the last we hear about this happening, and I hope those people get what they deserve.

It's a bit confusing because addons existed way before, especially on PC where you can just download or make your own then add it to your world. Also no need for decrypting files just to have them in a Bedrock Dedicated Server. Main highlight for this is the addon not being locked in a world. Some marketplace addons (those prior to the announcement) are world-specific so you really can't easily mix and match features, or add them on the fly. I'm guessing those ones are going to be updated as actual add-ons.

something that has aways been very interesting to me is why addon creator opt to make blocks static entities rather than actual blocks. it could be a technical limitation? hopefully we see this change now and addons open up for more possibilities now that they are easier to access! edit: you can see an example of this in the wool addon. 3:10

yes, it's a technical limitation, as blocks are very limited and mostly experimental, you can't edit vanilla blocks, and you can recreate most of them. the same applys for items although they aren't as limited because scripts can access them

adding blocks certainly has limitations and honestly is still pretty new tech wise. but i would not have been able to make "all the wool" if all of these wool blocks were entities, but some of the other things like the furniture are not blocks because players need to be able to sit and interact with them, and as a result cant be blocks. but i agree as the tech gets better we can move more things to blocks and thats a good thing

While I for sure think adding mods to bedrock is a good thing, I personally would not want them to be something you can pay for. I never truly liked the market place as it turned content generated out of passion into content generated for profit. I understand it has become a norm but looking at it, as well as say Roblox, I don't think it creates an inviting atmosphere. Modding has always been a thing out of passion and personally I think turning it into another business type ruins it. Having monetized mods for Minecraft feels like companies get yet another foot trough the door to start monetizing the concept of modding. If you are really passionate about modding and want to do something more with it, I recommend making your own games (like hytale)!

Still waiting for proper custom blocks/tools through data packs in Java though. This would be nice for better retail mod support that doesn’t require you to grab an alternate launcher just to use them. Personally I use the MultiMC launcher and can set up my mods very easily. However, I still believe it would be nice to have proper native support for things like that. Imagine just launching regular Minecraft and you can hop in a sever and it automatically downloads the custom content for you, and you never had to lift a finger.

As a Java Modder I feel there's a very clear reason that they're called "Add Ons" not mods. Java modders aren't allowed to charge for most mods, and this feels like a way to keep that policy in place with only their marketplace being the only way to have any form of monetisation. I myself don't want to charge but it is certainly unfair for models who potentially would like to add some paid features to allow them to keep working on stuff.

The difference between mods and addons is there is features coded into Minecraft for addons to work and mods directly change it at a fundamental way from the base. i know one of the data packs they use adds extra mob heads by taking advantage of java edition's custom player heads. bedrock edition doesn't really have custom player heads the same way, but it does allow for custom blocks with custom geometry, which basically means that it would definitely take more effort to port over but would also allow the shape of the heads to adhere to those of the mobs it comes from. like, if piglin heads didn't exist in vanilla, a custom piglin head could theoretically look much closer to how the actual heads do on piglins, what with being wider and having ears and all that. an issue with a block-based implementation would be that custom blocks and custom block geometry (like most things) have been in beta for a few years and blocks themselves are currently undergoing massive technical changes through the flattening. but since some of the current marketplace add-ons use custom blocks, i'm hoping this means they'll get a proper stable release soon. or i guess an entity-based implementation could work, but it'd be a little weird.

I've been looking at places that offer add-ons for bedrock but sometimes they just don't work which really sucks. On the other hand, it probably won't have most of the add-ons that I currently have on the server (no fog, unlock villager trades, lower shields, obvious suspicious sand, different recipes for certain items, accessibility features, etc) because they either are too small to make money off of or they would go against the normal progression of the game. addons and mods are 2 different things as mods change the code while addons add code on top of what already exist, these differences sound small but are huge which is why addons are much more limited in what they can do fundamentally compared to mods also why you never see anything truly crazy come out on bedrock compared to java because of limitations and lack of documentation, well the documentation exist but certain parts are outdated and important things aren't explained such as Mojang's Api which is very important depending on what your creating.

so, let me tell you addons have been around for years now, is juts that now you can buy them in the marketplace but there´s a tons of free cominity made content already, and even if we are somewhat limited, addons can do most of what java mods do now on days, we can´t still do stuff like port the controls from super mario 64 in the game but we are prettu close to java mods, without the issue of having to wait for an update for the addos every time a new version comes out

The push to monetize everything is really disappointing, part of the reason I love Minecraft is that you get all these wonderful experiences for free, I get supporting the creators, but it shouldn’t be forced, some people just don’t have the kind of money to buy every single mod they use

As a console player, this has been so cool! This has been great, for me at least, sure they can have some issues sometimes, but honestly, having them at all makes me happy! Console people rarely get the fun stuff, so I'm happy getting just about anything new bro.
