Thanks for not inverting our logo :) But yeah, you are correct, projects are only reviewed when they're submitted for listing. Unfortunately, moderating every posted version is not humanly possible, and automatic detection tools are hard to implement right (where they don't cause too many false positives, thus wasting moderators time that could've spent reviewing legit mods), and incredibly easy to work around through code obfuscation as you mentioned. Nonetheless, we're exploring all the options and had a lengthy discussion about this with our community. Hopefully in the future we'll be able to make modding safer for everyone 💚🐸
@MyFedora9 ай бұрын
Thanks for all the hard work you're putting into keeping the modding community safe. I had a couple of thoughts that might be helpful if you're open to suggestions. One idea is to use an automated system to flag uploads that have clear signs of malicious activity with low risk of false positives, and then automatically reject them. For other uploads, you could use a combination of automated static and dynamic analysis to help moderators with their reviews. For static analysis, you could scan for known obfuscation techniques and common malware indicators. These might not always mean the mod is malicious, but they could give the moderators a heads-up on which mods might need a closer look. For dynamic analysis, you could run the mod in a virtual environment with hooks into key functions to see what the mod actually does. This could help you spot behaviors like accessing sensitive information such as the session token or making network requests, such as sending the session token somewhere. Malware researchers often use a mix of static, dynamic, and code-level analysis to understand software behavior. From what I've seen, Java reverse engineers tend to focus deeply on code-level analysis, which can be extremely time consuming. When automated static and dynamic analysis doesn't give a clear answer, it might help to do both manual dynamic and code-level analysis at the same time to get a better picture of what a mod is doing. I hope these suggestions help, and I'd be curious to hear your thoughts. Thanks again for everything you're doing to make the modding community a better place. Keep up the great work!

Can we all appreciate the fact, that if Mojang would put in simple features like the Borderless Windowed Mode, then such "Simple" Mods would not be necessary and could not be exploited... Threat actors are everywhere on the web, and users generally are not security aware. Software Developers are responsible for their software. By both leaving basic features out of a game - that is still actively being developed - and allowing modding to the degree Minecraft does, is the perfect opportunity for a threat actor to exploit. Considering that Minecraft is the Game that (to my knowledge) sold most copies of all time, this means that any easy way to exploit it to distribute malware is guaranteed to happen. However, there isn't much Mojang about this. Any type of Security Measure they could implement into the game itself, would mean that the majority of mods wouldn't work any more. For them to audit mods is impossible, and even if, that would also be no help. The only thing they can try without pissing off their players would be to do what they should have done years ago, and put some quality of life features into their game, so that such simple mods would not be this numerous and that creating a mod that delivers malware would become more effort than worth - at least for most.
@killingtimeitself9 ай бұрын
borderless window used to be a native feature, back in the day there was a launch option you could add to force the game to open in borderless windowed mode, that's been broken since forever though.
@viper_exe_9 ай бұрын
The issue isn't with the features the mod adds, it's with the people developing it. There is zero correlation between a mod being simple and having malware. You could have the most complex mod in the world and it may still have malware. You must be doing some huge mental gymnastics to conclude that mojang is somehow at fault here.
@benchaak_vam_demer9 ай бұрын
@@viper_exe_ Threat actors think like companies. The least amount of effort for the most amount of successful infections. If you can develop mods that take an afternoon and load it full of malware, and at the same time, be very likely to receive a large amount of downloads, as a threat actor you have won the jackpot. Mojang can mitigate this, by adding these simple features themselves. Thereby taking away opportunities to exploit. Completely they cannot remove the threat of malicious mods, but they can at least make the threat actors work harder for it, what most of them wouldn't want to do.
@killingtimeitself9 ай бұрын
@@viper_exe_ that's... Not what they're saying, what they're saying is that if mojang were to just implement this natively (like was previously the case) then this wouldnt be a problem at all because nobody would need to use these mods.
@MyFedora9 ай бұрын
@@benchaak_vam_demer For threat actors, the least amount of effort for the most amount of successful infections is downloading cracks of premium mods, infecting them with malware, and uploading them somewhere. No begging for likes, no asking people to subscribe, just a straight to the point, detailed yet concise, informative video. Thank you peenix 😁

I didn't even know borderless window mods existed 'till now, that's actually really convenient probably

On one hand, I'm glad I've stuck with my 1.7.10 and 1.12.2 modpacks since the release of those versions. On the other hand, I'm sad to not be able to make a new, updated pack because I could potentially be downloading malware and have to fix an issue that someone else disguised as a "content patch"

This is the good thing about Modrinth. Their mod team is so fast in 3 hours they took down the mod after the report.
@bookwyrm18859 ай бұрын
Gosh, this is a hell of a way to find out mods that do that exist lol. I've always wanted that, and I'm glad I know which one is bad.

I absolutely nearly pissed myself when you mentioned borderless mining at the start, only for you to reveal that was not infact the mod of todays video lmao. phew

Luckily I had not downloaded this mod. But I wanted to thank you, as a channel that primarily does goofy Minecraft content, for taking a break and warning us about this potential issue. As most of the other Minecraft creators that I am subscribed to did not (yet). Espeically since time is of the essence. Anyways back to breaking Minecraft in horribly cursed ways!

Hi, i am sorry if this is late, but i have some info about the video you made about a month ago about the flying button in minecraft pocket edition :) the button is to stop flying, double tap it and you will fall and walk, the picture is a shoe, a shoe that is taking a step and you are looking at the bottom of it as its taking a step, it indicates walking, and for me it looks like those pointy shoes from the mideavil times :) (its also the same for elytron's aka elytra's)

On one hand I applaud them for dealing with it so swiftly but I just cannot believe they would make such a blunder as not verifying user-generated content past the initial release. There's a reason you can't replace YT vids in-place, why we didnt have tweet editing for so long, why things like Github and SteamDB exist. Can you imagine if Valve only verified the initial shipped version of a game from an indie developer and they were allowed to put ANYTHING in an update with no oversight and no public record?

Definitely gonna keep that Modrinth malware checker downlaoded just for if/when this stuff pops up in the future, especially since it has easy support to scan Prism Launcher's default directory too. Thanks for the heads up!

That’s one thing that marketplace is good for then. You can have mods, add-ons, and textures without worrying about viruses or malware problems.
