Okay here is a bro tip: If you want torches and can not find coal, you can make charcoal instead which will work the same. You need a furnace (8 cobblestones for crafting a furnace) And have bunch of woods Now right click the furnace and put Tree logs (eg Oak logs) in the upper section and put the fuel in the lower section (you can use wooden planks for fuel) Now you are done
