Jordan doing puzzles like this is like a small version of that idea that if you give a monkey a typewriter and enough time, they will eventually, coincidentally, produce the combined works of Shakespeare

Not coincidentally, but intuitively. Brain learns in the background, "getting the hang of it".

Jardon and I are very different people when it comes to logic puzzles like this. I'd refuse to move forward if I didn't understand why or how what I did worked. I'd sit there looking and and thinking about the puzzle that was already complete just to figure out why it worked

I'm not frustrated that he doesn't immediately know the logic, I'm upset that he doesn't immediately know to work backwards. He goes to the very last one, then jumps straight back to the buttons.

Fun fact, your CPU's clock speed is basically just a measure of how many times per second it "relays the D".
@katyahoopes6315
@katyahoopes6315 Жыл бұрын
surely not?? how the heck?
@greenpepperpasta
@greenpepperpasta Жыл бұрын
@@katyahoopes6315 Well it's a bit more complicated than that, but basically a CPU has a bunch of logic gates as well as flip-flops (the logic component introduced at 14:00). The arrow input is called the clock input because it's usually connected to a clock signal turning on and off over and over again - each time it repeats is called a clock cycle. (The name flip-flop is because it effectively stores a single bit that can be flipped back and forth each clock cycle.) All the flip-flops are connected to a central clock, keeping them in sync so they update their values ("relay the D") at the same time. So a single flip flop can temporarily store a single bit, holding it at either a 0 or 1 until the next clock cycle causes the output to update again. Note that the logic gates (AND, OR, NOT, etc) don't work instantly - they take some time for the signal to propagate through them and the wires connecting them, which is one reason why flip flops are needed to "hold" the output long enough for that to happen. They also allow things to stay in sync - for example an 8-bit number would be stored by making a group of 8 flip-flops (This is called a register). If you need to update that number, then you can be sure that all 8 bits will change at more or less the exact same time because they're all connected to the same clock signal. There's a Tom Scott video called "The Fetch-Execute Cycle" that does an decent job at briefly explaining what a CPU is doing each clock cycle.

Quite an interesting map! Even as an IT student who did have to draw a couple of diagrams like these, D-Flip-Flops need some time to get an intuition for. GG for doing it all in one hour! Also this map would indeed make a great introduction to the topic at an university.

To see the logic in redstone I'd think that you have buttons that control sticky pistons that move a block in and out of a separate redstone circuit. In the case of inverter it's as simple as a block with a redstone torch on it, signal into block, torch off, no signal into block, torch on and redstone after torch is powered. AND would be 2 pistons closing a circuit when powered. XOR would be a circuit with 2 paths and when in the same state the 2 pistons will affect different paths. basically a two way switch which is what we use to have 2 switches control the lights in a hallway. OR would just be 2 pistons where powering either one would allow for a signal to pass through. Not too well-versed in redstone however so don't know about flip-flop and such.

Now play Robot Odyssey, it's this but on steroids where you have to place the gates to get the right output. It's a browser port of an early 80s PC game of the same name. You save the game by copying the URL, you'd need it, it's brutally hard, and even the person who made the port took 8 hours...with cheats.

8:13 It's weird to call that a "multiplexer"....A multiplexer allows you to route a selected input to the output (often done via binary switches), but in this case it's a 1-bit multiplexer which is nothing more than an on/off switch.
