I'd say captain sparklez is not exactly the ideal candidate for hermitcraft, since his main focus is to follow an objective or follow a story. Hermitcraft is more about creating. Either farms, bases, etc. I feel like he would work better in empires smp

It absolutely is, the things we remember aren't their bases or farms, it's the interactions and stories they build with each other. That's exactly why they decided to use proximity chat so that it would be easier to do that. Sure hermitcraft isn't a dedicated RP server but id like you to tell that to RentheKing.

He's very good at objective games, hence why he does modded well. in vanilla survival, there isn't really an objective so he would have to have some really expansive (likely not building) gathering? helping? objective to keep him going otherwise he would have little to do.
