I think I know a way to survive this. You could build a hut from something like stone or dirt, something non flammable, and make sure that every empty space in the hut is filled with something, spare dirt, torches, signs. The lava should just pass you, and you can live in caves.

This looks like a good game mode. Like if you have 4-12 players spawn in random locations, and the lava rises 10 cubes every 5 minutes, turn building and crafting off, have a few houses already built with a few chests filled with a certain amount of supplies and last one left alive wins. You can even make it teams.
