My head canon is that whenever Steve crafts anything that doesn’t physically make sense, he keeps the extra bits in case he needs an extra bit of iron for door hinges, cork for bottles, paddle for boats, etc

Planks being hollow makes so much sense. Planks and logs are made out of the same stuff, and presumably have the same density, but one somehow quadruples itself upon being crafted.

the "no mods" clip is done by teleporting invisible shulkers (the only mob that you can stand on) a tiny bit very quickly along with having a floating block entity follow it to give it a texture.

You gotta tear up both of those blocks to find the good piece of wood. That's why there's a bunch of particles when you craft pressure plates, buttons, etc. You can then use those scraps to make a stopper for a bottle :)

For those wondering the first post is a reference to an old gore animation involving an anime girl, laser beams, and viscera. The original post itself almost certainly doesn’t contain any gore, but rather it’s just a minecraft build of the aforementioned laser beam death machine. The original animation is all pixelated so it’s really quite tame compared to the other things you might see on the internet from the early/mid 2000s, but it’s perfectly understandable why it’s censored.

So it makes sense why the material used in the head of the tool is required for repair, rather than sticks. That said, you shouldn't be repairing your tools with raw resources anyways, especially shovels.
