Have you ever seen the *actual* non-Euclidean geometry? It is way cooler and more insane than that. But some KZbinrs call their stuff non-Euclidean for views, even though they know it is a completely different thing, and just confuse and mislead people :/

This is also non-Euclidean geometry, just only around the portals. Everywhere else in these maps is Euclidean.

A portal seamlessly glues two Euclidean half-spaces into a Euclidean space (speaking locally -- geometry is a local property). If you draw a small triangle with one vertex on the portal, one vertex on one side and one vertex on the other side (or in any other combination) it will always look like a normal Euclidean triangle, with 180 degrees and stuff.

I remember really early attempts at a TARDIS before the immersive portals mod was used for this kind of thing and it was sooooo janky, but 12 year old me thought it was the coolest shiz on this planet. That was around the time the clone and fill commands had just been introduced, so I wanna say 1.7.10 or 1.8? If I recall correctly, it used command blocks to detect where the player was. From there, some form of raycasting was done to determine what the player would be able to see inside the TADRIS, and then used the fill command to actually place the blocks there behind the door, so the illusion would only work for one person. Now we've got immersive portals and it's as easy as placing a couple of portal blocks. I remember when the original portal (gun) mod just had static textures too lol. It's so cool to see how far people have taken this whole concept. I think minecraft is an excellent tool for getting an intuitive understanding for how non-euclidean spaces work. It's familiar, and has uniform block sizes that really help illustrate things like the short/long tunnel illusion. With the immersive portals mod and create, some truly unique things can be created. The minecraft community never ceases to amaze me. Thank you for making a video about this!!
