can you Imagine running from the warden, getting to high ground, thinking youre safe and then it just starts clawing its way up the side of the building with a creepy climbing animation similar to the one when it climbs out of the ground? terrifying. i hope they add a climbing feature.

@Whint Jamieroves not sure! if they do add this then youd think it would be fairly fast, in order to counter pillaring and such, but it might look odd if its too fast? maybe a bit slower than its walking speed, but faster than its climbing out of the ground speed?

I liked how you went for more of a lore/theory video this time, honestly I'd enjoy more of those kinds of videos. Also Reinforced Deepslate _is_ breakable, it just takes _82.5 seconds_ to mine and tools do not speed it up, and you can't pick it up. They also confirmed that you're not supposed to be able to push it with a piston, that was just an oversight (it is an experimental snapshot after all)

The concept of the warden being a mob to be avoided rather than confronted is a great new concept. Like you said, it comes to us rather than us coming to it. And the theory that it may apply to the rest of the Deep Dark stuff is quite interesting to be sure

People will still kill it for the challenge. And killing it is the best way to deal with it obviously lol. A extra dimensional dragon couldn’t defeat the player, why should some goblin thing be invincible. If it can’t heal, then one could slowly kill it off as well over time.

It's not like the warden is some kind of leader, it clearly works as a protector. the skulk acts as some kind of fungi hivemind that create an warden to protect it when threatened

Another "groundwork" implementation I've seen is that the upper rooms in desert temples can house a fully powered beacon with the beacon in the hole at the top. Others have noticed that the structure at the top of ocean monuments is the perfect size to start a conduit.

To solve the lava problem, I'd be really cool if after a bit of time the appearance of the warden will change to something that looks melted and it becomes fire resistance.

Its a great theory. Pretty much every game design has gotten a backstory. I think the would you explained made quite logical sense. It will be interesting the backstory Mojang (or players!) give it.

I have seen many theory's surrounding everything that has to do with the warden, the deep dark, and the ancient city's. However, I really like this theory because it connects with the mechanics of the warden and deep dark better than other theory's and this theory is not as far fetched as the others (like a new dimension). Great video as always!

Your theory doesn’t feel right to me. What stood out to me about the Ancient Cities was the wool-the inhabitants specifically put down wool, presumably knowing it dampens their footsteps. It seems likely that they found the portal and built settlements there using wool and built their shrines near the sculks intentionally. Evidently, it didn’t work.

maybe the wool was an attempt to not enrage the warden. a sort of precaution they did before their experiments. But their precautions were not good enough

The theory can still stand, you know the theory of matpat about some ancient builders building portals? Maybe this was another experiment trying to make a portal, when they did manage to make one, skulk came out, and a warden came out and killed abunch of them, they still somehow managed to kill it with their numbers, or trapped it as they could have use it to learn what the wardne is, they then started fortifying the place, using their knowledge gained from the trapped warden, they could have started worshipping it too, trying to get the powers of the warden as the zombie virus has killed most of them thats in the surface, so that they can live underground, but eventually they all died out

@@charlestonianbuilder344 The deep dark does seem to lack a food source. Outside of finding a nearby lush cave with glowberries. So maybe they were only prepared for a certain amount of time. They thought in a year or so the Virus in the overworld would have died out. And desperate with their food sources declining they opened up a portal to speed up the process of retaking the overworld. Maybe sacrificing some of themself. Those that were less useful and just another mouth to feed. To gain the Wardens favor. Which may not have worked.

In my time playing Minecraft, I realized no mob is as scary as the warden. Sure , it's easy to cheese like any mob But I suggest Minecraft should add a feature to the warden that when the warden can't reach the player, he can go Into the block you are standing on, and slowly damage the player. Just my opinion tho

@@Grane1234 Mining fatigue could work, though on Java, mobs only give the effect once every minute so it can be somewhat cheesed with milk. Bedrock however has the effect constantly reapplied if you remove it so it would be more effective there

An idea to help with the cheesing of the warden, also helping the idea that the warden is mob you HAVE to avoid: give the warden a second "attack" where he pulls the player towards him, like pulling the player's soul in order to turn it into skulk. That way you might be able to tower up or dig yourself in, however you need to continue to get away from the warden or else he'll pull you back into his hitbox

I think this theory fits the best, but I really hope its wrong. Just imagine all the possibilities of a new dimension, and with the nether being below and the end above, it could be a terrifying limbo of sorts, where the entire purpose is to slowly and meticulously explore to find the valuable secrets within, being extremely dangerous no matter how far into the game you are. The possibilities are literally endless.

my take: sculk came in through the portal, which was initially built by whoever lived in the city, and corrupted it. the people there that died first were corrupted with sculk, and they killed anyone that still survived. they worshipped something that looked similar to the warden, and what was left of their souls ended up taking on its appearance

My theory on the warden is that the ancient cities were a failed stronghold with the portal like structure at the centre being a failed end portal. The ancient builders built iron golems to protect them from the monsters that lurk underground but the golems got corrupted by the sculk and started killing the builders hence why there are no golems or protectors in the stronghold. Many of the builders died as it was hard to navigate around the ancient cities especially with the warden’s blindness effect. The builders built wool paths to block the vibrations and put snowballs and swift sneak to in the chests to help fight the warden. The lucky builders managed to evacuate the cities and built a new stronghold, the one we see today although they never managed to kill the warden.

@@Timethyclicketh I think is that the failed end portal they made, was what the sculk came from, the portal they made was a entrance to a unknown dimension where sculk originated, so the sculk came out of the portal and then the rest is history.

I feel like a good mechanic is for the warden to infect blocks it's near, along with the ability to break them. That would solve the pillaging and digging issue. The only problem with that is the potential griefing

The blocks it would infect could just revert back to their normal state after a bit. But you would sink through the infected blocks right back into the wardens clutches if you were to try to build up or cheese it

The “corruption” that you theorized deep dark is reminds me of terraria’s evil biomes, they spread, they have mobs that try to kill you (literally everything else in terraria too) and people find ways to cheese the bosses

Yeah I was thinking of this concept before, like when it opens your unable to enter then hoards and hoards of sculk creatures just start pouring into the ancient city and turning into an event such as the pillager raid, however it will just continually flood with sculk monsters until a true sculk boss shows up and after killing it the portal shatters and you can get loot of the various sculk creatures from the event

Yeeeeeees. have you ever played Terraria? there is an event in that game that is literally that. Its a crossover from the game dungeon defenders, and it is actually a portal to another dimension, you cant go there, but hordes of enemies come through with a mini boss once yo have killed them all.

if i may be so bold as to make an addition, i don’t think the warden was the one killing people, at least not immediately. judging by the purposely-placed waterlogged sculk sensors on the lamps, maybe they summoned the sculk through the portal and it was relatively benign (at first). some townspeople noticed that it caused mobs to not spawn near it, so they tried to transplant some out to the edges of the city. eventually, this lead to mobs dying and the reveal of how it spread. this got back to the elites in their society, and eventually a decision was made to try and spread it further. at first it was just mobs, but as with all things, they eventually moved onto the big one: human sacrifice. first the willing, giving their lives to help their perceived protector flourish, then later the unwilling, for daring to defy its will. as a final act, they found a way to summon wardens, which were intended to purge “the sinners”. but as they say, justice is blind. they went after everyone they could see. running only made it chase faster. perhaps some escaped, but a great many were trapped in the sculk’s grip, torn apart by their own machinations and used as fuel to propel the growth of the thing they once held so dear. further ideas include that the sculk, an extradimensional and highly intelligent hivemind, played the entire society for fools to make them spread it as far as they could, in order to gain more power, and it showed its true colours only once it was too late to stop it from hunting its _own_ prey.

In my experience, the warden can fall into a 2 deep by 1x1 wide hole; I left it there to explore another side of the ancient city. The warden seems to attack in an order of who annoyed it first. It will even ignore or get pushed by a mob in front of it due to how eager it is to pursue a specific mob.

Always love seeing a new video, but I think the portal isn't a portal it's a teleporter Edit: When I say teleporter, I mean I think players will be able to take it somehow and build teleporters around the world where instead of going through the nether on a nice boat, you just go through and it teleports you to a different portal you set up

Fun fact: Now the Warden have a sort of weird laser/sonic boom ranged attack that can actually go through MANY blocks. Like seriously, a 10 block thick wall won't protect you from its ranged attack

they should also make it so he can crawl and go back into the ground/walls and reappear somewhere else with the skulk having healed it , he would do this when he feels like he's taking too much damage , maybe even they could have rifts open up of the deepdark and maybe we could even try to go to the dimension or experiment with the mystic of the deepdark/try to gain abilities/enchantments/potions from it , maybe could even add alchemy into the game with it

I personally think the warden shouldn’t burn in lava, it feels a bit weird for it to burn when normal sculk blocks and such don’t burn up when lit on fire. Plus, ancient city generation really struggles with aquiffers and other sources of flowing liquid falling on it so it’d be better to have it lava proof to avoid issues with flowing lava that intersects with the city.

nah, I 100% agree with this theory. I don't think mojang is adding a new dimension anytime soon. That's more of a notch thing to add to the game anyway. The portal-like structure, shrines, and altars though, make perfect sense. Mojang is obviously alluding that this civilization tampered with powers and forces much greater than them, made a portal, foreign creatures came through, ravaged their cities, and spread the skulk. Now we're left with the remains: a long since deactivated portal and plenty of alien creatures

It should be noted that Minecraft is actually a post-apocalypse game, with all the zombies running around. My theory is that, after the ancient builders messed up creating the Wither, it caused a zombie apocalypse. Worse, because of the Wither, everyone was forced to go underground, where the undead could roam freely without fear of burning up in the sunlight. Summoning the Warden was an attempt to rectify the situation, but it just made everything worse. Sure, the Warden attacked the undead, but it also attacked everything else. The reason the portals are unlit is because the denizens then bravely shut them off, which is why there are leftover wool paths. They were from previous attempts to lock the portal, which succeeded. However, now there really wasn't anywhere safe on the planet, and thus that was the final straw for the majority of the ancient builders to make the journey to the End dimension. But a few stuck around to face the darkness, experimenting with redstone to create the Iron Golems, and finding a cure to the zombie plague. Alas, they did not survive themselves, but their legacy lives on. But where do YOU fit in? Apparently, the ancient builders could not return to the overworld dimension on their own. To activate a portal required to return to the overworld, it requires dragon's blood. But the ancient builders had killed nearly all of them, meaning they had to develop a way to preserve the remaining dragon some way. They developed a ritual where the dragon would respawn in an egg. The first time they killed the dragon, you were sent as a guinea pig to test if the portal worked. You were instructed to return to the end as soon as you could, working with those stationed at the Strongholds. Once they confirmed it worked, they would arrive with their army to finally rid the world of the Wither, the Undead, and finally the Warden. However, unbeknownst to them, the dragon had far more control over the results of the ritual than they could have ever anticipated. Like everything else they did, it backfired. While precautions were made against the dragon's soul sending portal users wherever it wished, it could send them to WHENever it wished. Thus, you never returned, because you were flung into the far future. Therefore, the ancient builders believed their portal was a failure, and no one else was brave enough to try again. It had gotten to the point where the average ancient builder was fed up with the grand schemes of their leaders, and overthrew them. Eventually, they evolved into the Endermen, named because they renounced themselves as the irresponsible ancient builders. They no longer could wield the armor and weapons of old, so when someone finally had the 'bright idea' to resurrect the dragon and start a cult, the others had no way to fight it. Moreover, due to how badly the builders of old treated it, it took to tyranny like water. Only those who obeyed it were allowed to leave the End. You can imagine a free Enderman's reaction when they realize that not only are you a mere survivor, but after looking you in the eyes, realize you're the same chump who they sent through the portal, but never came back. They would obviously project their failures onto that Steve, blaming them for it.

So my theory is that the "Ancient Builders" which has been coined as a term for minecraft lore as the people before Steve and Alex, built these cities, as we all know, they built everything we basically see in the otherworld, and similar to how they traveled to the Nether and the End, this was another multi-dimensional experiment, that went wrong, and caused them to abandon these cities they built deep underground, with a strange corruption coming from the portal, causing them to shut it down with no way to reopen it, but the corruption still lives on in these cities, lost from history, and unable to be destroyed as this strange infestation forms into the Warden to protect itself, consuming more and more of the overworld, conquering this dimension after it had already conquered its previous dimension, until everything is Skulk. The Warden is simply one of the many beings that this infestation is able to form, to protect its corruption from being destroyed by anyone trying to stop its spread. Keep in mind that souls are a canon part of minecraft lore, as seen in minecraft dungeons, and are harvested to create energy for powerful weapons and structures. The skulk infestation is powered by souls, and uses them to spread and form Wardens

I have a theory that the ancient cities were built by humans who tried to hide from the undead. They tried to escape into the sculk dimension, but it killed them. That would be slightly darker I think.

See, there is just one problem with your theory. Why would they add a special block and create a portal looking building, if they could simply use existing "deep dark" blocks and mix and match it to create even cooler looking portal frame, rather than bland looking frame made out of same block. There is a reason we have Nether and End Portals made out of same blocks. We can't have crying obsidian as a part of Nether Portal. Thats why I think, we will be able to interact with it somehow. It's still quite early to judge, but what if the "movable" portal frame is just another glitch, that needs to be patched ? What if we will be able to "ignite" the portal, but like the Botania mod, we will throw items through it and it will throw out upgraded items ? Item exchange ?

Well now they just made him completely invincible with his new sonic boom attack. Now he can even defeat the Wither in a 1v1 fight without any barriers to stop the Wither from fly camping the Warden.

The Wither can smash blocks so maybe the Warden can do the same thing, Either that or it can just noclip through walls and floors to reach the player. as for ranged attack I think it would be funny if it could grab blocks like Endermen do and throw them at the player dealing anvil like damage.

It’d be cool if the sculk would slowly spread as some sort of parasite throughout your world, especially in singleplayer. It’d give you a sense of being hunted by this parasite instead of you hunting it, trying to stay as far away as possible. Maybe it could spread through dimensions. It’d also be cool if instead of something just naturally dying on the sculk, make it so entities slowly fall through it and eventually die, spreading the parasite even more. The fact that the warden can be avoided with two blocks can be removed, make it so the warden spreads the sculk parasite as it hunts. Thank you for coming to my ted talk

A lil story I thought of, but not really backed up: Similar to this idea, there were a few survivors, utilizing the swift sneak enchantment to get away. I'm not sure where they went, but they might have become the villagers and illagers we see today. Also, due to the usability of the portals, I think that this portal was made first, then the end, then the nether. My reasoning is that this portal might have backfired, then the end portal is mostly two-way, but there needs to be a separate portal in a different location, and finally the nether portal is seemless two-way transportation, allowing for multiple pairs of portals.

Wardens now drop Skulk catalysts, which are used to make more skulk. Maybe that's how the initial infestation began: The skulk catalyst they carried reacted when they killed the villagers.

i'd say the subtitles reinforce this. The first time you activate a shriecker it says ''warden aproaches'' then ''warden advanses'' and finally ''warden emerges'' which implies that it is following you around the deep dark, which is something that freacked me out when i realised it

Honestly my first thought to fix this is add a scream attack, it would be cool and flashy and give the warden another cool gimmick regarding sound, it would also be cool from lore perspective cause then the warden would use sound to search for its prey and use it to hunt its prey as well.

If the Warden is so adapt at digging, whose to say it can't continue a chase underground when you flee in a space it cannot fit above ground. And a giant hand reaching out from the ground to attack or grab the player when it finally reaches you. This would eliminate a fair few cheering methods if it could just go back to digging to reach you.

I have a different theory, I believe that an ancient civilization just like you described it were trapped underground, they tried to escape creating a portal to a new (playable) dimension to escape their underground prison. However the dimension had some kind of "disease" or "parasite" that started spreading around in the city, the parasite killed the ancient people and it used their souls to create wardens (seeing as they can respawn we can say that there isn't just ONE warden) and the warden respawns because the souls are trapped in Sculk Shreikers which create some sort of alive entity.

Skulk seekers. Minions summoned by the warden that can only spawn on skulk blocks. They can sometimes spawn on the first and second shriek. They drop skulk ears that can be crafted into skulk sensors and shriekers. Just a thought. Fits your minion idea and adds to the stealth mission aspect.

One problem I see with one of your points, you say the warden is too smooth and not as stiff, but a hole I see is how frogs move, their also as smooth as the warden, I think this is just the result of Mojang moving into a new era of Minecraft mob animations.

At 6:18 when you were talking about how the warden is always tilting its body back and forth even when standing still and not being stiff at all. I would probably say its just too *animated* as its like the first mob that actually has animation, unlike the rest are just player-based.

Honestly, I agree with the Skulk coming to us concept, however with an added note.. when we go to the nether, there is still the chance for other entities to return through the portal to find us. So my theory is that, at some point, the portal will activate and other skulk-like creatures come through and we have to fend them off - with the possibility of entering the portal to their dimension. The Warden is suppose to be an entity we avoid rather than fight.. so possibly killing the Warden is a trigger for the portals activation - and even more monstrous things lay within it that would start attacking our world until we go in and stop them. - Potentially it could also have little to no reward, with the incentive being to stop the Skulk from further spreading or to stop even stronger Skulk creatures from actively seeking and invading your base. Additionally, while vibration seems to be a big thing with Skulk entities... what also seems big is experience. As experience orbs are apparently linked to the spread of the Skulk- thus, potentially creatures that could come from an opened portal to the Skulk realm, could actively hunt other mobs to gain experience and become stronger. Alternatively, the portal could lead to some sort of prison for incredibly dangerous entities, and the Skulk turns out to be only the defensive measures - leading to even more terrifying things within that go beyond what the Skulk can do. I mean, he is called a Warden after all. A final thought or theory, is that WE are in a prison, and the portal is the grand escape from said prison. That we need to achieve many other things, possibly killing the Enderdragon first, or even getting every achievement - and then we could do something with the portal frame. (Maybe the dragon egg or a lingering potion?). - we may not even be the prisoner, entities such as the Enderdragon and the Wither could be the actual things being contained within said prison, with us being sent in to eliminate them once and for all - with the Warden being the defense setup to prevent either from escaping.

Your theory makes the most sense to me (although there's a couple of iffys here and there but nothing major), especially since it involves the dimension coming to us instead of us going to it. While Minecraft has added some much needed variety over the past few years, the idea of adding an entire new, explorable dimension is not only far fetched when it comes to vanilla. Heck. Even the skulk feels like something that was modded in rather than a vanilla feature (not saying that I don't like those features, in fact, I'm glad they're being added). I just think actual new dimensions should be left as modded in features.

Best way to to fix the warden is the following. 1 - Immune to ranged attacks including dispensers. 2 - Immune to Fall Damage. 3 - Immune to potions. 4 - Immune to Fire. 5 - Immune to suffocation since it's undead. 6 - Warden can phase through blocks to get to you if it can't find a open path to get to you. So if you block the wardens path with any block the warden will phase through it. 7 - Warden can perform a ground stomp with it's foot to send a damaging shockwave to you if you are below or above it. The ground stomp will deal lots of knockback and can reach the player if they are 10 blocks in the air or below the warden. 8 - The warden is a huge mob with big arms I think a shield should be disabled when you are hit for a period of time and some of the attack still damaging you, example if you are naked with just a shield and you block the shield would be used/disabled for a period of time and you still take half health of damage. 9 - Only physical attacks can hurt the warden. 10 - No other mobs can hurt the warden. 11 - At half health the warden gets regen VI and can activate 3 times for every time it reaches half health. EDIT: Epic I think you might be onto something, these days Mojang just doesn't add major things into the game like they use to.. they always have good reasons to add all these things into the game so it could be a one way portal only allowing mobs to travel to our world.

I remember a nightmare I had about the Warden. I dreamed that I wanted to build an underground Base, but suddenly got reckt by the Warden. When I respawned, I was trying to avoid it, but it just kept finding me. At some point, the Warden had even arrived at my bed, and I couldn't get the Warden out of my room anymore, and it just kept killing me over and over again. Then I woke up.

I think they should add some sort of a grabbing like thing to the Warden. Imagine this, you are this cheap ol’ guy and is in one of these ruined cities. You now accidentally summon the Warden and naturally build up “out of it’s reach”, and then all of a sudden, you get pulled down and it deals about 2 hearts of damage “mainly from the force of it yanking you down). And, this could work if you dig inside of a wall or underneath it, since it has those long arms, it should be able to grab the player.

I feel like the skulk spreading from the ancient city slowly through your Minecraft world would be interesting, so that even if you go like 8,000 blocks away from the ancient city, every Minecraft day it spread more and more, faster and faster, as it slowly approaches you and you are forced to confront the warden or else the skulk will destroy and corrode your Minecraft world

It's incredibly strong, tough, fast, and tenacious. It's not too bright, but it's smart enough to use all of these to its advantage. It can track you wherever you are, even if it can't see you, and it can make you unable to see it coming. This is not a creature I want to mess with.

The Sculk and the Warden you theorized kinda reminds me of the Necromorphs from Dead Space where a dead lifeform becomes a Necromorph, except they weren't connected to a hive mind as they can see by sound and smell, and instead of plunging into insanity or madness, your vision would've dimmed by the time you're near it.

Oh yeah hunted for sure that was the first thing I said when I saw him in the Minecraft official video. Now what would be scary is the warden by default hunts the player from the start of the game. Like imagine the warden slowly makes his way up from the deep dark biome to stalk you. Man that would be quite the gameplay addition!!!

I think a very simple solution to cheesing the Warden exists non-destructively in the form of a smash attack that hits the ground with immense force in such a way that it launches you upward quickly so as to make taking shelter fatal from hitting a ceiling while also being able to knock the player off of pillars as well as harm the player through blocks without destroying anything. As for when this attack should be performed, that's ultimately up to the designers, but a simple activation system would check if a player is out of reach in the nearby vicinity of the Warden with various relatively simple factors and others that need more thorough consideration. For example, pillaring players can be detected by checking for non-flying entities being sensed above the Warden, but determining when a player is just out of reach such as by burrowing vertically or horizontally. Lastly, the attack should very easily advertise that it is about to be used since it is so deadly through various cues: both a long initiating animation as well as sound cues, to give the player at least a chance to escape, but not so long that escape becomes easy. It should be a very punishing action all in all.

An interesting idea I had is if the warden doesn't hide in the sculk, but is created by sculk. In my eyes, the sculk infestation is the real enemy, and the warden is just one of its monstrosities trying to help it spread.
