Well theres a method people use on 2b2t,lava,hide a chest inside lava, but what 2b2t does is smarter than that, because chestesp can obviously see through lava, so 2b2t players use item frames inside lava so xray cant see it and they arent chests so chestesp wont work

Also, it has no download count. It'd have to have above 115 to 116 million downloads, since IIRC JEI is the most downloaded mod on curse forge. Anyone that plays with even a single mod that adds an item uses JEI. JEI was semi-added to vanilla MC. I'd say that pistons would even be considered more famous since it was added to vanilla as well.

Ah, X-Ray. That mod was definitely a problem for SMP servers though thankfully I never ran into that issue on the server I played on back in 2012-2014. I was aware that people used it to find diamonds easily. But I didn’t know people actually used it for nefarious things like that though. I tried it once, it did what it says it does, allows you see things like ores through blocks which is pretty overpowered. I never used it again afterward though cause I thought it was cheap, didn’t know they had a resource pack version though. That’s insane.

The appeal for the basic X-Ray texturepack is high, since it doesn't require any knowledge to install, you don't even need to close the game, and the risk of getting banned is minimal. Anyone could even make x-ray texturepack themselves, since its basically just making the block texture empty (or only the outline visible) so i would be certain X-Ray (texturepack) is the most used cheat in minecraft.

And experienced minecraft moderators are capable of identifying whether or not X-Ray is used (regardless of is it Mod or Resource Pack), making quick work of these cheaters. There's a reason why people caught on cheating are permanently banned without right to appeal.

To be fair, I imagine some of those downloads also include those who just use it as a utility. For example, the other day I was trying to figure out whether or not the two spawners I found were both active in a particular spot and so I went and downloaded the xray resource pack knowing it would at least allow me to find that out with relative ease. It's not something I would ever use though for mining, as that pretty much defeats the purpose of playing. Plus, you can just get whatever you want through building farms, which is way more enjoyable to me. But as a quick utility, it's fantastic.

I used X-Ray for the first time the other day on my single player world to see what the most common coordinates were for each ore in 1.18. I know that Mojang put out a diagram, but I was finding diamonds at Y=-49 more often then at Y=-59. I was pretty amazed to see that Iron spawns prolifically at Y=-12, coal spawns extremely high, and there appears to be a relatively even distribution of diamonds from Y=-10 to Y=-52, contradicting the funneled rate of ore generation that Mojang claims. I did this over 10 different worlds and got the same results. Since I started mining at Y=-47, I've found WAY more diamonds. Nevertheless, I would never use X-Ray to further my world, or in a multiplayer setting. It literally takes the fun out of it. I've personally never understood cheating, especially in multiplayer. Even if you win or achieve your objective, you don't feel nearly as accomplished as when you do it the right way. Perhaps that's just me though.

XisumaVoid did a full analysis of Minecraft's ore generation in comparison to Mojang's chart, and found that the ore distribution chart they provided us is actually accurate, contrary to your findings. Granted, it sounds like all you did was use Xray to visually inspect the ores, not actually count them, and account for terrain generation. The srvr i play on has a very interesting plugin. Al blocks under the visible ones are replaced by ores, so you cant use xray. Once those blocks are mined, they get replaced with the ones that were suposed to be. First time ive seen an anti-xray plugin.

Fun fact about X-Ray: I played on a Minecraft prison server and one person had a chest hunt on their plot, so I went over, looked around for a bit and luckily dug up a chest that was in dirt. There were probably about 10 people also searching the plot, so it wasn’t too surprising that at least one person found the chest. However, the guy who owned the plot was a moderator and I got “banned for X-ray”. It still is slightly frustrating because I genuinely enjoyed that server.

The ultimate anti x-ray plugin would be one that checks to see if a block should be visible or maybe behind another block or two before letting the client knows it exists. This would probably take some really beefy server hardware to do correctly since it would basically be ray tracing, but I also imagine that it would improve network performance by reducing bandwidth usage because only a fraction as many blocks would need to be loaded in by each client.

I used to be a server moderator for the server called VanillaVerse, and our way of countering it was by giving moderators a notification in chat every time someone uncovered a naturally-occurring vein of diamonds. Xrayers who used it to find chests would often let their guard down and use it for diamonds, and seeing the same person find 20 veins of diamonds in 10 minutes would be great evidence to perma-ban them with. Since lava combat was banned on the server, those who did so were often countered by a similar notification that would tell the moderators every time a lava bucket was placed EXCEPT when within 2 blocks of another lava source block (to prevent lava moat construction from spamming our feeds)

A way to deal with seeing players and chest could be to whenever someone looks at a chest or player check the player has clear line of sight to the player. Then check if the distance to the player would allow them to see their nameplate unless they are sneaking. If these conditions are met you could set a max timer of maybe 3 seconds or something so if they look at chests or players they shouldn't be able to see for at least 3 seconds do some kind of administrative action on them. Maybe teleport them away and kick them. You could also count how many times a player looks at specific unseeable players or chests and once a certain number is reached punish them in some way.

I play in a server in which each player has their own little world that they can tp to, and then tp back to the server's main city. The personal worlds are blocked for public unless the owner allows it, so there's no way someone could grief you, even with x-ray.

I feel like there should be a workaround with this in the game's new lighting system. Blocks can be classified as transparent or opaque right? If that could be managed server-side you could register when a client requests a lighting change for a block coordinate without breaking a block, like if dirt suddenly passes light for a client you know they're xraying. You might need to have some kind of ray tracing on for the server to be able to detect that, idk enough to take this thought further.

The server can’t tell the client whether a block is transparent or not it can only tell what block it is and it’s state(s)

Tbh, a good way around, if you have the stuff for it, Ender chests could do wonders. Store your good stuff in there, because if someone else opens a Ender Chest, they just see whatever they themselves place.

wouldn't it be possible to make xray next to useless by doing what orebfuscator did by modifying what the server sent but having it layered? like an iron layer, chest layer, diamond layer, then finally a lava layer? bc those are mostly what xray users look for to my knowledge so making a literal wall that uses all the most sought after blocks would make it next to useless since you'd have to turn off diamonds, chests, iron, and lava therefore making them unable to progress past iron without doing it legit

i remember once i was banned on a server because my internet was bad and loaded me into the game but only showed entities and none of the block textures so i could only see chests everywhere and naturally i was like "uhhh what the hell just happened???" and they did me for x-raying

One thing you could potentially do is orbfuscate blocks which are fully obstructed using some kind of serverside raycasting or whatever. It wouldn't be the most efficient thing in the world but it might be useable.

I used it for a bit and then stopped playing survival for some time, its then i realised how much it ruins your mood.

Back in 2012, during one of my first times playing in a server, I remember having some connection issues while I was digging, and I saw all these ores and obsidian all around me and I thought I was really lucky to have found that - then I got disconnected. It wasn't until many years later that I learned that I was seeing the fake blocks from the anti-xray plugin because of the connection issues.
