Spawn chunks can make the difference between fast growth and super fast growth. Make sure you know where your spawn chunks are, how far they go and why Spawn chunks are good before you go anywhere. Dont click off this video until you understand... it could change your Minecraft game.

I think when you said your spawn was -256 & -65, it was probably -64 (not for certain), but given that MC works in multiples of 8, it's a possibility!?!? Wow, 1 block off, aren't I a picky T*#T!!! :D Did not know that about the compasses! Presume that's the same for MC360!? Are you going to update to the 1.13 aquatic update? It looks awesome, I really want to start playing PC MC now!! With the new drowned mobs, I want to recreate the Governer's idea in The Walking Dead and have a Zombie aquarium!! I'm sure you could even do zombie heads in glass tanks with some clever fandangling!

One other thing - Avo didn't specifically say otherwise, but just to be clear: not everything will run in the spawn chunks if you're not there. Villagers will still breed, iron golems will still spawn - but some things don't work. For example, crops don't grow, animals don't become adults, and (perhaps most obviously) mobs do not spawn unless you are close by, even in the spawn chunks. Iron farms and villager breeders are the most common things to build in the spawn chunks; however, you can also use it to permanently load the Nether if you know what you're doing (the scicraft guys like ilmango and gnembon are the dudes to follow if that's your bag).

I had no idea about any of this, so thank you very much. I read through the comments, but so far no one has the missing info, so I went looking (you can tell I love research). Some things I found: Being away from your spawn chunks, sure, animals will grow and graze, and redstone will work, but plants will not grow (bit of a bummer. Now I know why the sugar cane farm is so damned slow), mycelium won't spread, ice won't form or melt. So that's all interesting. And while the spawn chunks will stay loaded, hostile mobs won't spawn in them (even if things aren't lit enough) if you are more than 128 blocks away. I'd love to know more. Anyone?

Nearly everything in the video: - Spawn chunks load more game info than normal chunks. This works if you're in the overworld. - This goes 16x16 chunks around - You can find you're spawn chunk with a compass. - He got an iron farm But this long-witted fellow forgot to tell that spawn chunks do NOTHING for plants/crops. So don't make your pumpkin farm there and then definitely don't rebuild it because you think you missed the spawn chunks. Didn't happen to me off course.

The Center of the Compass is pointing is in the center of 4 Blocks on which it can and can't be in the middle of 4 Chunks, each chunk contains 16x16 but base on the Flatland, there's a Chunk with the Coordinates of 0;0 / 15;15, in short the 4 Chunks in your Spawn there with Directions are: SE = +X:+Z = 0;0 / 15;15 SW = -X:+Z = -1;0 / -16;15 NE = +X:-Z = 0;-1 / 15;-16 NW = -X:-Z = -1;-1 / -16;-16 By using this and with proper calculation, you can find your central Area within your Spawnpoint is on. This way, you can find the central point on which is mostly located at the SE and staying there, 8 Chunks on all directions not cointing the chunk your in will stay loaded, but the entities and contraption will only keep moving and working within the 6 Chunks in all Direction. In short, 17x17 Chunks where you are in the Central Chunk will keep Loaded but only in 13x13 Chunks are the limits for the Entities to move around, spawn, and as well as the auto farms as well. But dropped items have a timer before despawning, as well as mobs outside the 13x13 Chunks. The Named Mobs won't despawn at any matter though, but they'll still stop functioning if they're not within 13x13 Chunks and literally stay still. Spawnchunks are talking about the chunks that are available for mobs to spawn around you and they won't spawn in the chunk you're standing but the chunks that are surrounding it. In short, build your house within a chunk or 4 and surround that area so the mobs can't attack you and still spawn outside. But you still need to light up the place for them to not spawn on them since Monster Mobs can only spawn on 7 and below light level for them to spawn. And it's different from other mobs. I think. *Edit* Just in Case, Animals you've interacted with won't Despawn either. Like Changing the Color of the Sheep, Taming a Horse, Wolf, Cat, etc, Milking a Cow, breeding Animals, and even the Animals that was Born from Breeding. Cause they are considered as Entities that are Marked by the Player. Villagers won't Despawn either but they'll still stop moving if your too far away. Both Animals and Hostile Mobs will despawn whenever they are at least 4-6 Chunks away from you but will remain Spawned if they are within 4 Chunks of your location, thus the chances of you spotting a Zombie wearing Enchanted Diamond Armor and wishes to Turn it into a Drown to make them Drop the Armor and Weapon they are holding via Drowning them might just despawn right in front of ya. And it happen to me.

The info it's incorrect. I know this video it's old but still appears as top answer when search for Spawn Chunk info. Spawn Chunks 12x12(13x13) and not 24x24(25x25) as shown in this video. If a chunk is 12 chunks or 192 blocks like he told, away from the spawn block it will be unloaded. Loaded spawn chunk will be the 5 or 6 chunks (80-96 blocks) around the spawn block. To really test this you need to lower your render distance to 1 or go away farther than your render. For more clarity let's pretend our spawn block is at 0,0 and we go to coordinates 1000,1000. An iron farm at 70,0 will be working but the one in 192,0 will not.

So quick question. Is the 12 chuck distance a radias or diameter. Like is the spawn block a middle point of the 12 chuck with around 6 on all sides, or does the spawn chunk form with 12 on all sides giving a diameter of 24 and a radias of 12

I don't know if this counts as "something not mentioned", but for what it's worth: if you're running Optifine, then by default it _will_ unload spawn chunks when you're not nearby. You can make it work "properly" by going into Video Settings -> Performance -> Smooth World -> Off.

If you use a max size map it can also tell you the way back to your house, or at least which way to go if you know how to navigate. A compass is easier though.

Also, the bedrock in the nether roof is the exact same in ALL minecraft worlds (multiplayer or singleplayer, doesn't matter). So if you want to make a hole in your bedrock roof but you don't know where the roof is 1 block then you can go into the nether in a different world and find coordinates where the bedrock is only 1 block thick

6:20 is it just me or there's a mistake here? If the spawn chunks total area is 16 x 16 chunks, they're supposed to be the first 8 chunks in all direction from the spawn point. If it's 16 in all direction then it would be a 32 x 32 chunks area instead... O_O

this is so helpful... i had managed to find this massive, and i mean like triple the size, mushroom island and decided i wanted to do all my villager things within this area, i couldn't figure out why when i would go to the other side of the island or leave render distance things stopped working and I would have to reset it all. It sorta occurred to me today that it was because they were unloading and reloading and it was causing issues. Then I started looking into a way of resting my spawn chunks and everything I found was super confusing. Now I can start plotting and making a plan to see if I can fit my island into spawn chunks and hopefully that will solve some of my issues.

Thanks for the video. I play on a small whitelisted server, and we were all wondering why the admin setup a "no-build" zone around spawn. This now makes perfect sense, as to why servers don't allow building by members in spawn. it would lag the server constantly. But in single player, it's quite the reverse, which is good, from what I'm hearing you describe. Keep up the great works! :)

Wrong! I found this on the wiki: Entities other than players falling into the exit portal in the End will land on the exact spawn point. Items thrown in will mark the spot in the Overworld. Players will spawn like they normally do, allowing this to be used to perform the above without dying.

So how do we use this info? I understand that it simulates within a chunk distance. So, in Minecraft survival you cant change world spawn without voiding achievements. So I built my house (without king what chunks were) probably 10 chunks away or so. My house is VERY involving and not worth moving. Xbox let me set my chunk simulation distance to 10 chunks (default is 4). And at world spawn there are chunks that are always active. So, should I be building ALL of my farms at world spawn? Also, if we have 10 chunk distance, then does that me there are chunks at world spawn that are always active? Or is it a radius of 10 chunks at world spawn for a total of 20 chunks is all directions? And then is that additional to the simulation distance that radiates from my moving character?

Sadly, console edition (which I play the most) doesn't have spawn chunks or ticking areas. Very frustrating to have your whole flock/herd of animals despawn if there's no activity near your home/farm for a while! Console is still the easiest way for the kids & I to play together, though.

Hey, Iron farm is going to work, guardian farm won't because you have to afk at 123 blocks from it in order for it to function, cactus and furnace xp farms won't work either because crops and growth (wtf how do you spell it) stops functionning when you leave the area, and I've no idea concerning the villager breeder. Funny you put this video out, I have been recently reading up on spawn chunks and how to find and mark them. It all started with trying to find slimes! Very informative Avo, well done. Did not know about the 12x12 "usable" area. Nor did I consider the redstone in the area causing lag! To add one thing, if you go into the end, and toss some items in the exit portal then jump in it yourself, those items will have landed directly on the spawn block. Same as you found it with the compass. Good video. And as always, thank you for sharing!

I’m no MLG player at Minecraft (except for exploring and mining) but you forgot about slime chunks. Slime chunks are certain chunks that spawn slimes below layer 40. Slime chunks can spawn all across your world except for mushroom islands. If you want to find slimes without mining to layer 40 just find a swamp biome and see at night if it spawns slimes. If it doesn’t then look for another swamp biome. Hope anyone finds this helpful.

It's a 12 x 12 square centered on the spawn chunk. So six chunks in every direction from the spawn chunk.

I believe illmango has a video which goes in depth on the formation and functions of the spawn chunks, so I would recommend listening to that if you want to know more.

I finally got some satisfaction from this. I set my world spawn point within a couple chunks of my iron farm and automated chicken farm. Then I went off a couple thousand blocks to build your guardian farm. When I came back I checked and was very happy to see that both had continued to produce in my absence. Thanks for the info!

So the chunks 7 chunks away from the spawn chunk are never unloaded and act as a spawn chunk, but do I need to have the arrow despencer shoot every 20 sec?

It's not 16 in every direction, it's 8 in every direction - so 12 x 12 is 6 in every direction. Aslo if you google spawn chunk finder you don't need to do the maths.

I've built an iron farm in my spawn chunks in my 1.14 world but the farm doesn't spawn iron golems unless I'm close to the farm which shouldn't happen when the farm is in the spawn chunks right? The farm is pretty high up in the air but that shouldn't be a problem right? anyone who knows what can be wrong? Edit, i replaced the beds and for some reason it worked after that.

I have a bed and I've already set that as my spawn But my compass didn't point to the bed's direction, does it mean that the compass is actually pointing my spawn chunk? Or I should break the bed before using the compass?

If u break your bed and Die you will go to a location where u will spawn u will not spawn at the bed because its destroyed the compass will point to the location to the real spawn

Playing in Single Player Java 1.13.1, destroyed my bed, respawned (should have been in my spawn chunks), dropped a trail of wheat seeds, went to the nether, waited 10 minutes, and when I come back, *all* of my seeds are still there -- is there some setting that should be set properly?

Hi Frank I am pretty sure that when you leave one realm, if you dont have updating going on, the other realm switches off, this means no despawns of items However, it does mean anything in spawn chunks also stops working til you go back

Avo, My understanding is some things require at least 5 loaded spawn chunks around them to work. If the area around the spawn block is 16 x 16 chunks doesn't that mean you need to build in an 11 x 11 area?

Hi Kevin... It depends. Some things just need 1 chunk around them, some up to 4 (I think) So yes - I;d build the farms in no more than a 12x12 area from the middle of the spawn chunks (possibly even closer)

I have a question, so on console edition are the facts about chunks still the same as Java? Like the you can build in like a 12x12 chunk range and it will all stay loaded in or is it smaller in console because I'm not sure if it is 1 chunk or 14/16

Hi Jake No - spawn chunks are a Java thing... you can get ticking areas in Console, but I think you need to add a plug in.

Where you respawn and your spawn point are different your spawn point is where you initially spawn in that world and it never changes unless you use a command

Villagers do not despawn, however the village breeder would not work if the chunks are not currently loaded, and then work once you load them again. But your villagers would remain in the breeder.

You can also store hostile mobs on the border of the spawn chunks and to make a mob switch. Push the mobs into the spawn chunks to Max out the mob cap then basically have a peaceful world. There are many more things too. Like processing lazy chunks to keep them loaded using chunk borders but that's a hole nother video lol.

Hmmm.. Now I've got a dilemma.. I've got to use Ticking areas in MCPE.. But here is the catch.. There is no spawn chunk that stays open in MCPE survival and you only get an active area around you of a certain number of chunks. if your minecart/villagers move outside this area they can de-spawn. Now here comes the dilemma. The ticking area (a bit like a spawn chunk) cannot be set in survival 😔 but can when cheats are enabled.. But if you enable cheats you don't get the achievements from playing minecraft. So, do I enable cheats and loose the achievements/pure survival world and set the ticking area then switch back to survival or continue playing with a broken world? What would you do?

I think keep the achievements Can you set up a minecart or a dispenser to keep the chunk loaded in MCPE - I know you can do that on Java in some instances

Had to set up a new world 😔 .. To keep the achievements. The ticking area works around the player so as you move the ticking area moves.. So if you set up a minecart or dispenser clock.. This will all stop as soon as it drops outside the player area.. This is determined by the simulation distance as a circle around the player. In my case 8 chunks (4 chunk radius) which is not very far. That why its so difficult to keep the villager breeder or iron farm working at the same time.. So have to sit near each zone to ensure each works properly and as soon as it leaves the radius, you guessed.. It breaks how annoying. Anyhow, like I said set up a new world.. And set up a 4 chunk circle to act a a spawn point ticking area.. But will experiment with this to see how I get on.

the spawn block is not necessarily the centre block on a chunk, it could be any block in the 16x16 and actually, you can spawn on any block 10 blocks around the spawn block. yes - the end is a good way to absolutely locate it... but killing the Enderdragon is a tough call to find the right block... use a compass instead - its a lot cheaper and easier

Hey, Avo. 10th like, 10th comment! Good video. I have been researching spawn chunks lately and have a question. I keep seeing the spawn chunk area described as a 12 x 12 area. Doesn't that mean that the spawn chunks are centered around the spawn point? And if so, wouldn't the spawn chunk area be limited to 6 chunks (96 blocks) in each direction from the spawn point? What you describe in the video is an area that is roughly 24 x 24. Or am I a complete wally? LOL

Find the spawn point w the compass. Mark out the surrounding chunk - 16x16 blocks numbered 0-15 in the F3 debug screen The spawn point position within the chunk is v important to find the centre of the 12x12 chunks. If your spawn point is close to the edge of the chunk it’s easier to work out where the centre point is cos the quartered chunk is slightly wonky. XD If you’re not totally confused yet: look to see if your spawn point is closer to the NW, NE, SW or SE of the chunk - that’s going to indicate in which direction the very centre lies

Nate Simmons when you sleep in a bed it doesn’t change your spawn chunks, just where you’re gona spawn the next time you die. You have to enter a command to change the spawn of your world

Yes, farms that require random to speed like crops will not work in spawn chunks, I recommend building an iron farm in spawn chunks because it doesn't rely on random tick speed.

Watched this then built your 1.13 iron farm. Still not getting iron golem's when i'm away from the farm. Spawn point is x = -32, y = -191. The center of the iron farm is x = -15, y = -331. I ain't good at math, but, I'm pretty sure this is within the spawn chunk? Correct me if i'm wrong.

am assuming you mean z, not y the thing about spawn chunks is that they aren't necessarily starting from 0,0 they could be 1000,1000 - it totally depends where you spawned when you entered the world if you make yourself a compass it always points to spawn - you can then follow it to get there
