A couple of months ago I was going from Czech Republic to Venice by an overnight bus. We passed the Austria-Italy border at around 3am. I couldn't get much sleep because of the cramped seat conditions, but I was half-asleep and listening to this album. Watching the Alps outline in the night to this soundtrack was an absolutely majestic feeling.

My great grandfather was a "ragazzo del 99" (1899 generation) the youngest possible men that went to war on the italian army, during one of the many infamous and sadly pointless italian suicide charges an Austrian grenade (i suppose a model 17 eirhandgranate) exploded near him and a piece of sharpnel destroyed his right ear leaving him deaf. He liked to think he never killed anyone, just a boy in a greyish green uniform pointing a dirty carcano at his fellow men in bluish grey uniforms because he had no choice, no one did. Even if men fell in front of his sights how could he know for sure if it was his bullet? it could have been the soldier next to him, the mg nests, the artillery, it could have been accidental friendly fire or even the treacherous terrain itself... Almost like if the mountains were angry and disappointed giants of stone and dirt killing both, regardless of uniform, flag or language. Never again.

Some of my ancestors were also there on the Isonzo front, albeit on the other side of the trenches. As far as the "family history" could tell, they came home as different men. The brutal terrain and the war left a mark on them. They were also 18-19 year old boys, fresh out of the school, thrown into combat in one of the most challenging fronts of the Great War. A street in my hometown (Debrecen, Hungary) is still named as Doberdó, commemorating their valiant, bloody - and rather pointless - struggle. Never again, indeed.

This album paints a horrific picture of the horrors of war and replicates the feelings of anger, fear, and sorrow. It fills me with a deep melancholy, but also with motivation. I can just imagine seeing mutilated corpses falling down into the dirt and soiling the earth with streams of crimson. Among the corpses of young soldiers, with bloodstained uniforms, visible wounds made by bullets and bayonets, the soldier's faces are permanently painted with terrifying expressions of horror. Definitely one of my favorite BM releases in recent memory. One of the best USBM releases of all time.

The speech in the beginning was recorded on 16th Feb 1916, spoken by Karl Franz Joseph of Habsburg (then heir to the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, later known as Karl I.) for an organization that supports widows and orphans. Text freely translated by me: "I was at all fronts, with all troops of our glorious army. I saw all nationalities of the far monarchy heading fully united for a great goal, a glorious peace. In the eyes of all soldiers, pugnacity and confidence in victory could be seen. One heard expressions of the deep love towards our adored, highest lord of war and of the unlimited faith in god from the mouth of each of these heroes. Also admirable are the heroes of the back lands, the silent endurers, who, through the war, either lost their most beloved or live in constant fear and worry about their relatives. Worthy of this great era is the war aid, where everyone that is unable to defend the fatherland with sword in hand, strives to lessen the severe woes of our virtuous warriors through infinite benefaction."

My grandfather, born in 1893, took part in some of the bloodiest battles on the Western Front before joining the French Air Force in 1917 and fighting alongside the US forces. He was rewarded for several acts of bravery (saved a comrade under enemy fire, first soldier to reach the enemy lines, fought alone against six German fighters in his plane...). During WWII he joined the French Resistance and died of influenza in the 70s not without having kept after-effects after having survived the crah of his plane. He never talked about what he had done, I discovered his past with my father many years later. Every time I listen to this album I think of him and the millions of others who sacrificed their youth whatever their side.

This is the most beautiful side of Black Metal. It shows that this genre has so much more to offer than non-stop blastbeats, tremolo picking the same riff for 7 minutes and dull satanism for rebellious teenagers (nothing against elaborated satanism though!). And it fits the theme of war perfectly: there's no honour and glory in war, only pain, death and misery. This album depicts the brutal truth through history, it's just the right way to deal with this subject, and it totally gets to me. Thank you for sharing this piece of art!

@@Malabus73 Yeah yeah, keep playing the victim. As long as you have no arguments ready, you sound like a crybaby. And as you can see, all that agree with you function the same "barely" and take zero repsonsibility for their own idiocracy.

I could never relate to the horrors of this conflict specifically, but I can relate to the wordless emotions felt as an infantryman - the grim reality of the profession and the celebration of militarism and comradeship more than anything. This album brought me to tears and came at a time that I really needed it in my life.

This is great! So much "atmospheric black metal" just sounds like musical wallpaper. Background music. This is music that's meant to be actively listened to. Really dig it.

What is funny is they are more of a war metal band, listen to previous albums and even the members names make it obvious. Part of what I think makes this so awesome.

Do you really think atmospheric black metal requires more technicality in order to be good, or even to be actively listened to? Its artistic value lies in its immersion: the thickness of its atmospheres; the depths of its soundscapes which each note, chord progression, guitar layer, the fuzz and reverb, etc. all work together in order to meticulously craft with a sort of aural paintbrush. The slow, droning kind of atmoblack you allude to is meant to open a portal to other worlds, surrealist planes… Minenwerfer-which definitely isn’t war metal-is great in its own way, but I still think bands and projects like Paysage d’Hiver, Darkspace, The Ruins of Beverast, Trist (the German one), Arkhtinn, Gnaw Their Tongues, and so on would wipe the floor with it. Ambient and atmospheric black metal are vast, vast subgenres and-at least in my book-usually the pinnacle of the genre.

I'd say Sabaton did (and somewhat does) a great job, but it's not Black Metal. I'd suggest to check them out. Best albums are Art of War, Coat of Arms and Carolus Rex (there are two versions, one is Swedish and another in English, Swedish imo is better).

@@200sx16v Very debatable, i know a lot of people from there that feel very Italian and i don't think Austrians ever felt guilty about occupying Milan or Trento for decades. Anyway that's exactly the kind of manner of thought that we should overcome. I couldn't care less if you call that Sud Tirol or Alto Adige, it's Europe, we're both Europeans. None of us can occupy our own land.

Men made of terror and pain, till the end of their days, spend the vital time that they left struggling with eternal wounds and looking for answers to things with no answer. In fact, their war doesn't end with bullets, it's just the beginning of a living jail, the beginning of a lost war, the beginning of an end. The triumph of inhuman humanity.
