It's a cycle. Ming has the same relationship issues with Mei as she does with her mom/Meis grandma, who was strict on her which caused her rebel to keep her relationship with Mei's dad which the grandma didn't like. Even though she did rebel against her mom, being overly strict and stern was the only parenting style Ming ever learned, so it caused it to pass on to her relationship with Mei, though thankfully she broke it and now the family, has a better relationship for it.

No no it happens when you're the oldest child too. And on top of getting this exact treatment you also get to watch your parents treat your younger siblings completely differently. They're allowed to do whatever they want, they're allowed to make mistakes, they get away with everything because even at age 18 and over they'll always be "so young, they just don't know better" but you at the ripe age of 5, already needed to show the example because you're bigger than them, you know better.

Honestly, I feel like people saying Ming is a bad mom aren’t watching the movie very well. Don’t get me wrong she’s very very overbearing and suffocating, but overall she does love Mei. She was just to scared to have her daughter be something she deemed bad, but sometimes you have to let the baby bird leave the nest. Mei and Ming’s relationship was stronger then before at the end of the movie, because Mei didn’t have to try and be something she’s not
