14 years isn't necessarily all that old for a cat, Jingles, despite what some will have you believe. We've had three cats: Beauty lived to 19, Jasmine was 20 and Whisky was two weeks shy of 23 when he went off to the big scratching pole in the sky.

The cat I grew up with lived to be 17; the last three years or so she was on a diet because her kidneys were already starting to fail. However, aside from that, she was also somewhat handicapped, missing her left hind paw since she was 4 (probably a traffic accident; she never crossed streets afterwards anymore, but she could still run faster than I could as a child - I was just a few months her junior). Then later there was Pino, who lived and worked at a hotel bar I would sometimes sit at late hours and/or while they had a band playing. Pino was one of those cats who sense when a human in the room needs some support - he'd give this human some thoughtful attention. He was like this with me in times of mourning; he also introduced a traveling student girl to me, who, along with three friends, could use a place to crash for the night (which I could offer them). But if the human would be like: "Oh look a cat, how cute", Pino would flatly ignore them. And if you weren't in a cat mood, he'd just respectfully give his attention somewhere else. Anyway, this distinguished perfect gentleman lived to be 22.

Cat whisperer is something that usually happens to dog lovers. My friends call me the druid, given how well I get along with any animal(and the fact that I play a druid in WoW - but that's neither here nor there). I've had golden retrievers for over 20 years now, always considered and still do consider myself a dog person. That having been said, all cats, be they wild or belonging to my friends, took an instant like to me. All that came ahead in 2023, when, after taking my Tali(yes, inspired by that Tali) for a walk, I come home and, behind a massive steel door at the entrance to my apartment building, I hear and see a tuxedo bastard meowing her heart out. Long story short - I now have a tuxedo cat beside the golden retriever.

My wife and I are very much the same. Cats invariably love me, it never takes long to get them rubbing around my legs. My wife is the same with dogs, they just seem to want to come and sit and lean on her. Now that is all well and good but she is allergic to them... Thankfully she is fine with cats as we have 4.

Have had many cats in the past and what you describe is the main difference between female and male cats. All my males were very affectionate virtually all the time. The girls could be when they felt like it. Kind of like women in that regard. My favorite was a little calico that we rescued; she was our first female. She really like being scratched, to the point that if you stopped before she was ready for you to stop she would swat your hand until you started scratching again. Having been a stray when we rescued her, she settled right in as part of the household with our existing male cat. Our male was already neutered and when we had her checked out, the vet told us she had been spayed, but there was no adjustment period. Everybody settled right in together like it had never been any other way. As sweet as she was I can't believe anyone abandoned her, but we never could find her owners even though we made every attempt. Our little calico was foster mommy to all kittens who came to us thereafter. Just curious, is Nino your first male cat? I think all the other cats you've had in your house are female, at least the ones I've seen over the years I've been watching you (since 2016).

New cat here too. We've had rescue cats in the past and the last one was the gentlest animal ever. I wanted to try to get another with the same temperament and thought my best chance was a Ragdoll. Turns out they don't start out life with the calm/friendly nature they are known for! We have some wounds from those "hyper" moments when she wants to bite and attack everything that moves.

Jingles, on the topic of "ain't noone gonna ever need that amount of storage!", my dad bought a 2GB HDD in 1998, if I recall correctly. He assured little me that this storage was going to last a goood loooooong while, because file sizes have sort of gotten a grip and they are not likely to be growing as fast as they have been to that point. Less than three years later, he had that 2 gig HDD in a mobile rack (remember those?) and he upgraded his storage to a 32gig HDD. Another two years later that PC was deemed obsolete and a replacement was built. That replacement, in turn, had trouble running Company of Heroes without overheating a few years later.

Hope all things go well for our new Boy. As far as what you say about cats. I believe they take it as a challenge to win over dog people. Then once they have you they just toy with you from time to time. Certain breeds are very good at playing aloof to bring you into their service. I myself had to stop living with animals as breathing became a problem. My last girl being pregnant when she came to me. I had her till the kittens could be placed then I had to let her go. I would have loved to keep them all. They all got good homes though.

It warms my heart to hear you taking in a cat from a shelter. There are too many cats and dogs who get abandoned by their "owners" just because they want to go on holiday and can't be bothered finding a sitter. Also, I've heard that people who have cats are more likely to make friends with other cats, i.e, meeting a random cat on the street. It might have something to do with cats rubbing themselves up against things to mark it at their territory, and as safe. So by having cats at home that you cuddle with, and they rub themselves up against you, they mark you as friendly and safe, which other cats might sense, and thus be more willing to approach and socialize. Not sure if it's true, but personal experience does lend some credence to it.

I can fully agree on never having enough storage space in a pc. My boot drive is 1 TB (930GB usable) and i'm down to 60.1 GB of free space on that. I have a 4 TB usb external drive, which is a mechanical drive that i've been using for years as data backup and as my steam library. But after installing the Hogwarts Legacy Creator Kit on that drive and seeing just how bad the performance is on a USB mech drive, I've elected to get a 4TB SATA SSD, which I ordered earlier today and should be here by tomorrow (Scan have EXCELLENT delivery times.) My 40th birthday is this Thursday, so it was a tossup between a new 4TB drive or a knock-off Lego kit, which I still may pick up. I could have gone for another M.2 ssd, but the second M.2 slot on my motherboard is on the back, and to get to it, i'd have to pull the board out of the case. No way i'm messing around with that if i don't need to. I'm still running a AMD 3900X 12 core, 32 GB of ram and a 2070 Super. Unfortunately, I may not be able to upgrade to a 50 series for a long while, it'd drain my bank account just bying the card, never mind the new power supply i'd probbaly have to get as well. No way 850w is enough for a 50 series. And yes, Jingles, you are posting videos on KZbin, and you have pets/furry owners; you are legally required and obligated to upload photos and videos of them, I thought you knew this! Can't wait to see pictures of Nino, who, at the behest of your loyal audience, has been pre-promoted to the rank of Captain :P As for female cats being less affectionate than males, well, my brother's female cat, Brindy, who died a couple of years ago, was very affectionate with me. I was around her since she was a kitten, and I gave her LOTS of attention, so she was very affectionate with me. My girlfriend's two female cats are ALWAYS snuggling up to her.

@Jingles: About your PC: Make sure you have XMP enabled for your memory. If not, it will run on lower speed. The builder may have done this for you, but you might just want to verify it just in case.

Its probably a scan Prebuilt as they are the most likely to have a 5090 in fact they are saying a 10 day delivery time for scan 5090 prebuilt. Scan are pretty good at making sure XMP is set up correctly.
