Great story…. It is true that we all have a story. I am self taught and it has been fun to see how you paint. I put the rug down in my art studio if I drop paint which I will it won’t ruin the carpet underneath. It has ended up being 6 x 10 which will work great for me. It is on the other half of my bedroom. I took the window half and it feels great looking out at my trees. My story really how fun. I was a nurse in my 40’s lost my career to illness. After 1 year I started painting landscapes cabins etc. and my dad gave me a bunch of saw blades which I would totally refinish then paint them. I joined an art club and they were snobbish because I was considered a crafter until our summer art show. A master artist came in to critique our work. He said “has she ever had a lesson”. The gal escorting him said no. He said to tell me never take any lessons. After I ended up selling everything I painted and his comments I never overheard that she is a crafter. I was considered an artist. I then got healed and ended up becoming a Chaplain and working with the homeless and seniors. That was in 94’ to 98’ being an artist. At 65 I retired and dabbled in my art. I normally give my work away if someone likes it and have a few requests on the burner. I don’t sell my work anymore I am in a low income senior cottages and I give it away. I might get a few dollars for new paints but the Lord blesses me so I can have fun. I am now trying abstracts. But first I have a lot of holiday cards to do. God bless…. Well, you said share lololol
@BettyFranksArt2 жыл бұрын
What a wonderful story, Linda! I love how that master artist was able to see a true artist (not a crafter). Those words must have made you feel so good and gave you even more confidence to create. I also love that you helped the homeless and seniors. We need more people like you who care for these folks. Keep on creating and enjoying the journey! Hugs to you!

Thank you so much, my art journey started out when I was in the depths of depression. Creating and therapy helped me to overcome depression. I have been painting for over 25 years, first watercolor, then acrylic, oil with palette knife. Back to acrylics as it is easier since I have rheumatoid arthritis and my hands are wonky….but I can still paint!

So many years of creating! I love it. And, you got to experiment and play with different mediums. I personally prefer acrylics and will probably stick with them for many years. Keep on creating, Patti!

Hi Betty. Today you shared your art story & I just wanted to say I thought it was great how you were inspired on your walks with your mom when you went to pick those wild flowers in the fields. It’s interesting how being with her took you to find your abstract art gift. If not for that circumstance & timing you might not of found it. Or at least that particular one or that breakthrough. When you go on in your life & look back you’ll always have that to remember about your mom & how she was a big part of you finding your gift. It’s like you found treasure Betty. Treasure really in yourself. Happy Holidays

I have been a pastel artist for 25 years. Not liking the dust, framing with glass, etc. I got the Novacolor paints and will attempt to create fun colorful abstract paintings. I'm excited and a little nervous. I can't start painting for a couple of weeks so I'm trying to be patient. Thank you for sharing your artwork. It's so colorful, which is something I love. Suggestions for painting names: you mentioned "Icing on the Cake"; Bloomtown; Walking Through Wildflowers; Pick Your Bouquet; Blooming Abundance; Step Into the Colorful Wild... Just some thoughts 🙂

Hi Laurel! Thank you for those title suggestions! My heart did a leap for "blooming abundance", so I'm going with that! Love it! When you start painting with acrylics, please be patient with yourself. Changing mediums is hard. You're so used to pastels. It's going to be very different to work with paint. But, you'll get there! They are beautiful, I love the set of colors. I paint too, I'm self-taught... I am very inconstant, I get bored very easily. I paint abstract, but then I get fed up and move on to flowers or portraits or landscapes. The sea is my favorite. All this preamble to ask you if sometimes you do not want to change the subject. Mine is absolutely not a criticism, but a curiosity. I love your paintings a lot and your ability to combine colors. A hug and good art
@BettyFranksArt2 жыл бұрын
Good question, Piera! I used to paint everything and anything until my heart finally found what I love. Now I have no desire to paint anything else (although, on occasion, I'll paint more realistic flowers--but they're still abstracted). I think it's great that you're trying everything. And, if you're finding that you're bored, then it's not speaking to your heart. You haven't found your passion yet. Keep trying different things until you do!

Hi Betty, I love your abstract art and enjoyed hearing all the different roads you had to go down to eventually find yourself as an artist. I went back to school when my kids were young and got a degree in Fine Art. I was intent on being an Art Therapist, but the University cancelled the program and the other options were too far away. The years went by and several life changing crises seemed to happen, one after the other. I just did not feel in the right headspace to create anything and the people in my life needed my constant help. I love my family but feel like I lost sight of myself - who I was as a person, outside of being a mother and caregiver. My mom passed away when I was 53 and it was a huge turning point in my life. She was a talented woman - very artistic and intellectual but never had the opportunity to fulfill those passions. I don't want my story to end like hers but I feel I would be honouring her memory by pursuing my art. Even though I'm 56, I still want to try. It's really difficult because I still don't know what it is I want to express and the clock is ticking... Oh well, carry on I guess!
@BettyFranksArt2 жыл бұрын
Hi Trace! Thank you for sharing that story with me. You still have so much time!! Could you start making it a priority? It may mean not doing the laundry or cleaning the house. Those are not as important as doing what your heart is calling you to do. If this is truly what you want for yourself, I know you'll find a way to make it happen. And, one day, you'll thank your younger 56-year-old self for taking the bold steps forward. You got this!

I am painting everyday, and although I struggled at first, finding my 'style' it came to me and now I am making connections, and hoping to have a show next year. Even if I can paint for one hour in between my duties, I will go for it. Betty, you have been an inspiration! Thanks Betty I loved your story and feel very inspired by it. I was wondering today on how best to proceed and now think I'll do several on paper first. I've done a few canvases but now want to develop my own style more. I've been on an art and craft yourney for over 50 years now. Have progressed through sewing, knitting, crochet, embroidery, tapestry then onto melted glass on copper jewelry later did dried flower art, made birthday cards, quilting, next became an adult fan of lego and designed a lot of architecture with it. The grandkids love the lego as they are free to play with it. The last couple of years I have a bigger house and three rooms dedicated to hobbies, sewing, lego and painting. In my 70's now so have time to explore these hobbies. I also love gardening and camping so am spread a bit thin at times. I tend to focus on one area a few weeks then move to another room a few weeks. So have just got back from a camping trip and now feel like exploring painting again. I think your little paintings are just gorgeous.

Excellent show/commentary. For most of my life (50+ years) I didn't like 'abstract art'...; then, later on, I decided to become an 'abstract artist'. LOL

I loved this video, you tell your story! I’ve followed you from the mixed media days, and I love watching your artistic path. I still have all of the stamps and stencils, but haven’t dipped into them since turning to paint. I love water and acrylic, and have even abstracted a koi with oil from a finger-painting tutorial with Iris Scott. I love drawing still, and neuroart as well. You know you’re one of my favorites, and on this video, you grabbed a color and I said out loud where you’d be putting it, and you did. My dream was to have work from 3 of my favorite current artists, and yours is an original. I put it in a frame with a kickstand, and have it for inspiration when I paint, but take it back upstairs every night. It’s even come to work with me. I just love your use of color, plus you’re just a really good person, and it shines through in the videos you create. I’m so glad you post them, I look so forward. Happy painting! 💖

Hi Kris! You make my heart so happy! I just love what you said about using my art as an inspiration and then taking it upstairs every night. You are so sweet! It sounds like you have found what you love to create--love that! Keep on creating and THANK YOU for continuing to follow my art adventures all these years! 🧡🥰🧡

Betty, I love these two, yes adorable. Naming them was easy for me because they both jumped out and named themselves. The one on the right should be called "Summer in the park" and the one on the left is simply "Summer Garden". Thank you for asking.
@BettyFranksArt Жыл бұрын
Oh, I love those title ideas! I already gave them titles, but will save these as possible future titles on other pieces I create. Thanks so much, Lois! UPDATE: I just looked these up and I have already used Summer Garden, but not Summer in the Park. thanks!

I am a collage artist, but for the past couple years I have not created anything that I really love. I have an art studio on the 2nd floor of my house. This weekend I created a concertina which came out just great. I like your paintings, but I'm not a copy cat. Would like to develop my own style of abstraction, love the flowers.

My story is that I retired from my ;career at 57. Tried to be an abstract artist but didnt really liked what I created. Then I found Alcohol Inks and spent 6 years working solely with them. I started mixing them with acrylics., to paint Expressive Landscapes. Its only been a year since I found Andrea Garvey and you. I love both your art because I love Vibrant colors. I love your style and Andreas. Have been taking classes to undestand markmaking. If you have any suggestions please let me know. Thank you

Hi Bonnie! Thanks so much for sharing that with me. I love that you focused on working with alcohol inks for 6 years. That's fantastic. It shows your commitment to really getting good at your craft. It bet your paintings are gorgeous! I'll have a new online workshop in about a month or so. Join my email list if you want more info when it's ready: www.bettyfranksart.com/email-sign-up (I can't remember if you're already on my list). Thank you!

Loved this video and hearing about your journey. I didn’t know that you’re Canadian - a nice bonus for me (also Canadian, live in Toronto). I’ve just started into art in a serious way since retiring about 1.5 years ago. That said I’m still trying to find my preferred style, but I’m getting there I think. I’m certainly having fun doing it, and really enjoying all your art, videos and social media posts. Thanks so much for generously sharing everything.

Thank you for a wonderful video. Why didn't you do any marking with the nail etc. and no drips.
@BettyFranksArt2 жыл бұрын
Good question! I don't do the same thing on every piece I create. As for drips, I felt these were too small and the drips would take up too much real estate (so to speak), so I opted not to do them. Thanks so much for watching, Linda!
