비투비 멤버 임현식이 미니 1집 [RENDEZ-VOUS]를 발매하며 솔로로 데뷔한다. 그간 비투비의 ‘그리워하다’, ‘너 없인 안 된다’, ‘아름답고도 아프구나’ 발라드 세 곡을 연달아 히트시키며 명실상부 최고의 작곡가임을 입증한 그의 솔로 앨범 소식은 많은 관심을 불러일으켰다. 발매 전 사흘에 걸쳐 공개된 티저 이미지에서 그는 데뷔 이후 처음으로 애쉬 블루 컬러의 헤어스타일을 선보이며 다양한 콘셉트를 소화해냈다.
전곡을 자작곡으로 채운 것은 물론, 앨범 콘셉트와 로고 디자인에도 참여한 임현식은 단순히 앨범뿐만이 아닌 ‘임현식의 우주’라는 하나의 프로젝트를 손수 이끌었다. 앨범에 이어 첫 번째 단독 콘서트의 기획과 MD 구상까지 어느 하나 그의 손길이 닿지 않은 곳이 없다. 메인 테마 ‘우주’에 대해 그는 전부터 많은 관심을 보였는데, 특히 우주 공간에서 일어나는 만남과 연결에 대한 고찰을 앨범에 담고자 했다. 흔한 사랑 이야기가 아니라 사람과 사람의 관계를 광활한 우주에 빗대어 노래하는 그의 모습은 음악을 대하는 그의 진심을 보여주기에 충분하다.
임현식이 들려주는 우주에 관한 다양한 이야기는 얼터너티브, 록, 신스 팝 장르를 넘나들며 펼쳐진다. 그가 직접 남긴 코멘터리처럼, 어쩌면 풀리지 않는 우주의 미스터리는 바로 사랑이 아닐까? 앨범을 들으며 곡마다 숨겨진 뜻을 찾아보는 것도 좋을 것이다. 앨범명인 [RENDEZ-VOUS] 역시 특별한 의미를 담고 있다. 우주 공간에서 조우한 두 대의 우주선이 서로 부딪히지 않도록 같은 속도로, 같은 궤도로 나란히 비행하는 것을 일컬어 프랑스어로 ‘RENDEZ-VOUS’라고 한다. 사전적 의미의 ‘RENDEZ-VOUS’는 ‘만남’을 뜻하기도 하므로, 첫 솔로 앨범으로 ‘팬들과의 새로운 만남’을 기념하고자 하는 그의 따뜻한 마음이 느껴진다.
타이틀곡 ‘DEAR LOVE’ 뮤직비디오는 신동글 감독이 메가폰을 잡아 특유의 감각적인 연출을 선보였다. SCI-FI 장르적 요소와 임현식의 섬세한 감정연기가 어우러져 평행우주의 초월적 사랑을 아름답게 그려냈다. 그의 노래를 들으며, 우주를 유영하는 듯한 황홀경에 빠져보자.

“실제 도킹 영상이나, 영화에서 나오는 도킹 신을 볼 때마다 너무 짜릿해요. 그래서 ‘DOCKING’이라는 곡을 꼭 작업해보고 싶었습니다.”

모든 것이 마음처럼 안 되고, 지치고 답답해서 어디로든 떠나고 싶은 밤. 하지만 곧 밝아올 아침을 피해 깜깜한 스튜디오에 머물 수밖에 없었던 임현식의 경험담이 녹아 있는 곡이다. 특히 강렬한 비트와 훅 파트의 기타 리프가 인상적이다.
“원하는 만큼의 결과물을 얻지 못해 창작의 고통을 느낄 때, 아침이 찾아오면 기분이 안 좋아요. 계속 밤이면 좋겠다, 어둠이면 좋겠다고 생각했어요.”

Yes, he wrote Dear Love, Docking and Rendez-vous all by himself (including playing every instrument in the songs) and co-wrote Moonlight and Black with two other composers. I'm so glad that you like him! He is definitely one of the most dedicated singers and composers in the k-pop industry. You may also try some BTOB songs if you like his music style :)
