Hello (sorry about my english) I also do a retrofit with SZGH, on emco 240, all things are a litle bit bigger ;-) 1) the old Motors are 5 phase Stepper Motors, it is possible to get 5 phase driver to drive this smal Motors (but I cold not get one to drive with 230V) I don't use 24V drivers, there is not enough power.I use only 230V drivers Higher voltage enables faster polarity reversal of the windings, which improves the motor's characteristic curve. 2) min 5:01 the Sensor ist the reverence senser to home the axes, normaly ther is a mark on each axe to to get manualy to it. Then home it. I think this is a very good idea with high prezision, homing on 1 rev of the spindle than homing on the axe, on the other hand it is a bad idea while you could homing on any positions, and there are no limit swithes on the emco turn machines. 3) 6:23 I also think mounting stepper driver on din rail is not the best way, the housing is also used to cool internal parts, and mounted dirct on metal plate helps cooling.

Hi, thank you for all these tips, very useful! The 240 is indeed a bit bigger;) whish I had the space for a type of lathe like that. The homing strategy you mention is interesting, but indeed risky if you don't pay attention. Good luck with you project!

Nice work how accurate is this machine? Can it produce parts with tolerance >0.01mm
@uptimefab7412
@uptimefab7412 6 ай бұрын
Hi, I am not sure if this applies to Emco 50 lathes or parts in general, but I just measured some delrin parts and for diameter I am well within +/-0.01mm. (stdev 0.0025). For length it is a bit less accurate with stdev 0.0088 on this specific set of parts.

Do you have a link to the parts you used mainly stepper motors and pulleys and timing belt ?
@uptimefab7412

Sure, they are listed in the pdf document which can be found in the website article, linked in the description of the video. The pdf contains links to all parts used in this retrofit.

I'm finally getting around to doing my retrofit, using a masso and clearpaths. The homing uses both a mechanical and the hall effect sensor on the lead screw. both switches need to be activated during homing. its very precise, I plan on keeping that system. any idea how many teeth are on the pulley on the leadscrew? also since mine was running, I crunched the numbers, they were running the motor at 120hz, to get up to 3000 rpm.

Looks like a very nice setup, I am jealous about the clearpaths. Not sure which type you have, but I can also imagine increased wear on the lead screw if these are set too agressieve in terms of acceleration and speed. I don't know the exact teeth count on the pulleys. I just calibrated the gearing ratio in my controller to measured travel on each axis. This then includes the pulley ratio and microstepping. I also have mine set to a maximum of 3000RPM. Works fine but typically stay below 2500. No particular reason other than noise reduction. Good luck with your project!

what is the purpose of the cross slide assembly being on a 45 degree slant?
@uptimefab7412
@uptimefab7412 2 жыл бұрын
A slant bed lathe should have easier chip evacuation, as they would roll off the bed. In this case with the bed not having way covers the benefit is fairly limited. Also the angle makes the depth of the machine a bit shorter as the axis is in a diagonal position. Mostly though, I think they chose this design here since it was used as a teaching machine in schools for industrial lathes, which in many cases have a turret and slanted bed.

@@uptimefab7412 thanx. I have always wondered that. Beings tho in either situation there is no real space savings.

sir, the emco lathe has only 2 limit/homing switches, i.e. x axis and z axis?
@uptimefab7412
@uptimefab7412 2 жыл бұрын
Yes there are only 2 switches, one on each axis. I use these for homing. Since there is no limit switch on the other side of the axes, I have set the SZGH controller to apply soft limits for that side. This of course only works after the machine has completed the homing cycle.
