I know you spent quite some time rebuilding the engine and the stock engine bay looks great. I have had to replace so many hoses the engine bay looks terrible. Keep up the good work George. Love that word “Dipstick”. Reminds me so much of old work colleagues 😂

and the Z4 - I have to run the engine until warm, so it can measure the oil level (then it can tell you it's dangerously low)

It is idiocy, like after you change the oil you also have to run the engine to check the level. What if it was too low?

My RCZ , which has a Mini Cooper engine, has the handy feature of an electronic oil level plus a dipstick.

Good warning on the length of the dipstick. This dipstick is available for gen1 Mini too but do not buy it! The original is stiff and goes into the block into an angle. This (Cravenspeed) dipstick is not stiff and thus goes into the block in a different angle. This leads to incorrect readings of the oil level which is quite dangerous imo.

Use a white kitchen towel and put the stick on it you will see clear the level!

I always thought my eye sight was bad or going mad as I could never read it properly. I would place stick on paper to get better reading but as you state it's erratic at best

If your boost pressure is ok try checking the veins on the turbo can be prone to sticking give them a good clean with some oven cleaner

All it is an aid to read your oil level you're meant to use it and then replace it with the original one guarantee you will find it somewhere in instructions I found it

@@GeorgeAusters yea man nearly had a heart attack when I seen you use it love my minis not going to let you destroy it but yet bad design can very easily get trapped in engine and in timing chain personally threw it away

Yeah so ok bud cool channel but with the mini on the oil level I I have found the only decent way for checking the oil leave her on a level surface all night oil will be settled then hopefully will have run out of the tube use a bright light you should be able to get a decent Reading but please please don't use that chill peace and all that

The dipstick on my 2012 E84 N47 is showing signs of age, it was a bit cracked and I picked at it and some plastic fell off. I want to replace it before bits fall off into the engine oil, where should I buy a replacement one? I’d like one that is easier to use and can’t find any on euro car parts. Do you have any recommendations?

Guess the best thing to do would be measure your dipstick and search for ones of the same length

Some high performance diesels like my 40d and m50d and m50i petrol have physical dipsticks like this aswell as the idrive. I dont know why some models off bmw dont have dipsticks and some do

Most newer petrols don’t, but pretty much all diesels do👍🏻

God knows. It’s an awful dipstick , I speak from experience . Idiotic design continues on the Mk 3 Mini . Certain controls at a low level have warning lights . Great . But they’re impossible to see ! The ventilation distribution ( screen/ face/floor) has markings so small you need a magnifying glass to read them and you have to go through a distribution sequence ( up to 8 pushes ) . Utterly stupid.
