May I ask a question? I am new to machining & I am curious as to what the hand wheel is actually for as I thought that screw was driven from the machine?

yeah the machine powers the lead screw. it comes in handy when you use the lathe for milling operations, end mill in chuck work clamped to cross slide. and some times you can get a better finish feeding by hand.
