I’m an artist of both traditional and digital But I cannot begin on a fully white canvas or paper The sketchbooks I buy all have a slight yellowish tint to the paper and when I am drawing digitally I have to make the canvas a light dusky pink or lilac Sometimes I even color the canvas to match with what character I’m drawing because it keeps me in their headspace

I don’t under paint all the time but I’ve noticed that for more muted or fall type watercolor paintings, I like to use a watered down nickle azo yellow. It’s bright but not blinding and unifies the painting, especially when I do flowers and leaves.

Im seeing a lot of acrilic which makes sense but how does this work with water color? Im having a lot of issues with my colors bleeding and I feel like underpainting would exasperate that
@ieatpaintchips7220 күн бұрын
I don't have a lot of experience with this. But do you know about like the drying. So if you're doing oils and then you have that thin underpainting is it going to crack your upper layers
@Ryro_patd21 күн бұрын
How do you do an underpaint? Like the first clip was like watery, then the others were thick?? Which thickness or thinness would be the best
@gamatwilit653820 күн бұрын
You'll see a lot of artists thinning it and keep in mind, underpainting means paint is gonna cover it up. You COULD do a thick layer, but you're covering the whole canvas. That's a lot of paint. It's cheaper to thin the paint. Thinner paint also keeps the canvas' texture as a bonus. Some artists may prefer less canvas texture and may use thicker paint. It's also good if the underpainting is going to be visible in the final art work (e.g. not painting over the BG) Underpainting can be ugly, patchy, etc. You just want a base to work off that isn't white, for the reasons in the video but also because what colour you start with changes what colours you'll pick. Baby blue on a very saturated orange BG is going to look white. Same colour on a white canvas is going to look more blue and less bright. It's easier to guess what is going to work with a dark blue BG if the canvas is dark blue as opposed to white. If the canvas is neon pink, you're probably going to use more saturated colours to match it

You don’t have to by any means! But I highly recommend it. With oil paint you can actually layer oils on top of acrylic, (but not the other way around), so you can save time by doing your underpainting in acrylics as it’ll dry so much faster. This is what I do on most of my paintings.
