For the horizontal struts. Is there anything behind the plywood that it’s drilled into. And do you think this method would work with a brick wall at the back instead of ply. Love the vid

Hi @bencarter3623 and thanks for the question. The plywood is attached to the framing behind. I set it up so the U-brackets generally are placed over the framing behind as well, so they are screwed into both the plywood and the framing. It seems quite solid. Again, I am not a carpenter nor have any formal carpentry training, but the design made sense and worked in my space. I don't know about drilling directly into brick. My sense is that brick probably wouldn't be sturdy enough on its own, but that's just a guess. I imagine it would depend on how thick the brick was, what was behind the brick, etc. Might be worthwhile to check with a mason +/- a carpenter? Thanks for watching and glad it was helpful!!!

I would not trust those brackets holding the 2x6s to the OSB plywood/studs. I’d recommend removing the plywood on the wall and attaching the horiz 2x6s to the wall studs with carriage bolts thru both. That’s a lot of weight on just deck screws that are only screwed in to the ends of the 2x6s. That’s my two cents, but thought I’d comment, as I’d hate for your wall to fail while you or someone else is climbing on it.

Where did you get the bolts for the holds? Thanks

I purchased the bolts part of the package sold by Moon Climbing. But you can also pick up the 3/8th inch bolts at most hardware stores

I really appreciate these home wall build videos. Really inspires me to build my own home wall. I just want to ask, will your method of using those U-shaped brackets work with concrete walls as well?
@explorersurgeon Жыл бұрын
Thank you @choojunwyng8028!!! Full disclosure, I am not a builder nor have any formal building training, so take what I say with a grain of salt. But my sense is that the U-brackets should work in concrete, you just would want to use long concrete screws. Best of luck building your own home wall!!!!

Those U-shaped brackets are Joist hangers. These come made in different steel gauges (thicknesses). If using this method you need the heaviest gauge as they are not really designed to take this kind of loading so heavier steel will go some way to mitigate this. You could then fix directly to concrete.

hate to be that guy but I think your foot holds are upside down. slopey side up.

Yes, the ones on the mini tend to be harder tighten. So they tend to spin more, and we end up tightening them down in whichever direction they end up sticking. We have to readjust and retighten every couple of months.

Thanks @pddxxl ! No, I am not really active on instagram at this point. Just put up these videos in my spare time, hopefully someone finds ‘em useful!
