Don't watch this unless you are thinking of building a Moon Board - it is long and dry.
Not really an instructional video about my build - just some tips and mistakes I made in various parts of my build - some details that may help someone who is going to build their own home climbing wall with Moonboard specs.

Nice! Thanks for this. Just ordered the 2019 set up. Psyched for it. Agonized a bit over going for a tension set up or a kilter. Why did you choose moon over the other two?

Price, app/ community, and familiarity. Cheaper than the others, bigger community and better app, and I had used the moonboard a few times at the gym.

hi Alan. Awesome videos, thanks! Silly question: do you think it would be possible to build a retractable Mini Moon board attached to the ceiling? Meaning, when not being used, it could pivot on the high end attached to the ceiling and end up flat on the ceiling. I suppose the frame could look similar to the usual shape of a retractable/adjustable board, only that it would pivot not on the bottom as usual, but on the upper side. This could be a good solution for those like me with a limited space in the garage, but then I have not seen such a design, so perhaps this may have some structural issues that I do not know. Hence my question, as you seem to be quite an advanced builder. thanks!

This is great information! I'm in the process of building my wall right now. Currently Im staining my wood and getting it all ready for the build. Im not a builder at all, and I feel like a bit of an idiot because when I did a mock up on SketchUp my 12 foot 2x6 was about 5 inches short after I made the 40° cut. Any idea of what Im missing there?
@AlanHauser
@AlanHauser 3 жыл бұрын
You'll need to buy longer studs than 12 ft to compensate for cutting the angle. Which according to my math of tan(40)= x / 5.5 means you'll cut about 6 and 1/8 in off the end of the stud.

@@AlanHauser ahhh thank you! I'm glad to know I'm not crazy! Although I think you mean six and one eighth inches? Six feet seems a bit excessive haha!I wish they would have included something about that in the directions, for us amateurs that don't know anything about building. Thank you for saving me time and money on buying the wrong size!

Hi Alan, thanks for putting this video together. I have a similar space to you and want to add a vertical wall on the right side as you did. What materials did you use for that? Also, I'm constrained in terms of width and it might be a bit of a squeeze-do you know what the total width of your build was including the vertical wall?
@AlanHauser
@AlanHauser 3 жыл бұрын
The vertical wall was an existing part of my garage, and has strange construction, but the supports are 3.5" thick, and the vertical wall is 2.25" thick (but on a normal build would probably be 3.25") , so in total about 8 ft and 10ish inches

@@AlanHauser Holds have arrived so getting to work. Back with a couple questions: first, are you connecting between the vertical support posts left to right under the crash pads? And second, what are you using to connect the vertical posts to the horizontal posts?
@AlanHauser
@AlanHauser 3 жыл бұрын
@@natewilairat1522 I did have a 2x6 running under the pads initially, but then I bolted the horizontals to the concrete floor with a couple 3/8" concrete anchors and removed the 2x6 so the pads can be flat. For the vertical to horizontal posts I did a half-lap/ cross-lap joint, along with 2x 3/8" bolts.

Hey, any chances of sharing more details on the way you've built the frame? Yours looks super stable. Do you have any blueprints?
@AlanHauser
@AlanHauser 3 жыл бұрын
I sort of improvised as I was building, but I made a rough 3d model in SketchUp/ 3d warehouse that you could use.

I may have missed the info in the video, but what sort of screws did you use in the screw holes of the holds?
@AlanHauser
@AlanHauser 3 жыл бұрын
Are you talking about set screws? If so, I'm using torx head construction screws - #9 x 1.5 or 2" depending on the hold.

@alan are the holes for the led's the same size as the t-bolts (13mm)?
@AlanHauser
@AlanHauser 2 жыл бұрын
I think the instructions say 1/2 inch or 13mm, so I think I ended up using 1/2 inch.

Would you use 2’4 or 2’6 to build the frame?
@AlanHauser
@AlanHauser 2 жыл бұрын
I would do 2x6 if you plan on a similar/ simple construction. My 15 degree spray wall is made with 2x4 and they are much more flexy and require a lot of additional bracing, and more studs altogether.

Is there a way to get exactly a 40 degree angle on the board?

I used basic geometry equations to get some measurements, then I checked as I was building using a digital clinometer.
