When you tested the connection between earth and solder tip it did not display "short". I displayed 1.7 mega ohms! So, why said it was showing the correct value?

Because it won't go any lower, even when having both leads directly connected. It's a measurement error but because the LCD showed 1.7 MOhm, the user assumed it to be 0.

1 on left of display means over range that is more than the instrument can read that is a good reading, if you test live and neutral you should get the same reading if the soldering ion is in good condition, if you press the test button with the leads not connected to the the ion you'll get an open circuit and 1 will be displayed on the left of the screen short the leads to gether and the meter will read 0. The minimum value the meter can read is what the manual says this refers to the resistance of the circuit you are measuring. If you get a reading less than 1megga ohms then the circuit or appliance must not be used as it is unsafe. I am an Electrition so I know what I am talking about the test instrument is a great tester for some one who is new and starting out in the electrical industry I have been using uni-t testers for 15 years and I have never had any problems with them.

No push button? This is so dangerous!.. If you touch by accident the probes you can die.. It should to had an push button so if you receibe a discharge , you will be able to stop by pulling off your finger.. Well sorry my bad english..

Something wrong with your leads, short should show nearly 0 Ohms not 1.5 Meg Do you know what you're doing? If not, please don't post, you could cause death or injury.

David Price No nothing is wrong with the leads, this is not a Ohm meter, it is a insulation tester, and it has a minimum ohms reading, and now... Do you even know what you are talking about? If not, don't post garbage in the comments and mislead people...
