Great Vid, Thanks!! I installed one from Jegs in a 01 mustang gt today. Happy to report no grinding was needed, stock c-clips slid right in. The stock pin from the lsd carrier did fit right in, but had the mini spool pin, so installed it. Mini spool pin was the same, except had no flats ground in it like the oem.

Grind flat spots on the sides of the c clips is how I've always done it

I've known about grinding the C clamp, but this man maintains the strength and integrity which is necessary when drag racing. I feel grinding the C clamp would create play as well as weaken the C clamp.
@RealSteelStreet Жыл бұрын
He’s referring to just grinding the edges enough to fit into the same slots that your locking squares do. C-clips would remain the same thickness AND length back-to-gap👌🏼 They’re simply retaining the axles anyway, unlike grinding ON the actual mini-spool itself 🤷🏻♂️ Which, honestly, c-clips are a big no-no for drag racing anyway cuz when an axle breaks it’s coming OUT regardless! Best option would be a c-clip eliminator and full spool obviously but poor men gotta do what poor men gotta do! Lol

I have a 3ed Generation Explorer, and I'm thinking about putting a locker in it. Would it ruin my truck as a daily commute with that type of rear end?
@toyshopfab3 жыл бұрын
If you installed a mini spool then yes, it would decrease the life of your tires due to not being able to slip on turns but if you installed a limited slip or a air locker that would be better for a daily driver.

If you have access to a lathe you could remove just a small amount of the splines on the bottom outside letting it slide down a little more without messing with the axil.
@toyshopfab2 жыл бұрын
A lathe is definitely on my list!

excellent video man, have you had any problems/failures with the mini spool?

Thank you. This particular setup has not been in the car yet but I have not had any problems with this brand of mini spool in any other rear-end.(Ford 8in or GM 10 bolt)

Hey buddy follow your videos awesome 👌 work. Had one question:can I use regular mig wire to weld up axle tubes to the cast housing on 8.8 or i need specific wire??
@toyshopfab3 жыл бұрын
There are many different answers to that question but I will tell you what I did. I cleaned up the axle tubes and housing really good with a wire wheel then preheated the area with a torch and used my mig welder with .030 wire and welded it up. I have not had a problem yet (and hopefully I don't) but it wouldn't hurt to look and see what other guys are doing as well. I hope this helps!
@nitrofish19743 жыл бұрын
@@toyshopfab thats awesome 👌 I can do that. The guy at the fabrication series says he used 309l stainless steel rods which I don't have so I'll do what you suggested cuz I have torches and everything I need . Thanks for your prompt response 👍 your awesome 👌 👏

Question, I'm building a vic for a dirt track car. I'm trying to make the race this weekend so I just plan on welding the spider gears until I can get a spool. Will I still be able to get everything apart to put a spool in after welding it up?
@toyshopfab3 жыл бұрын
No, so if you weld it up plan on getting another carrier

What if you Could trim down the c -clips like on a belt sander very lightly ya hink?
@toyshopfab3 жыл бұрын
You probably could depending on how much. Mine would have been about half and since they hold the axles in, I decided to taper the splines.

Very strange. This is the first time I've seen this issue. Watched a couple of other people install mini spools in 8.8 rears, everything dropped right into place. China made mini spool?

With doing this , is it point less to do c clip eleminators ?
@toyshopfab2 жыл бұрын
You can still do the C-Clip eliminator if you want but it is not necessary with this setup unless you're drag racing or concerned about the axel sliding out with drum brakes.

No disrespect, but to me this is a classic case of WAY overthinking it, but I get that a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do…It’s just a whole lot easier to simply hold it with a pair of pliers with the gap facing away from you and then grind the 2 outside edges of the c-clip on a bench grinder just enough to slide in the same spot on your half as your locking square does 🤷🏻♂️ Then you’re also not grinding on any part of the actual mini-spool itself and losing structural integrity or spline surface👌🏼 C-clips are still the same thickness & same length back to gap, all they’re doing is retaining the axle anyway. Keep in mind though, every manufacturer’s is a little different…I’ve even had some where the blocks are too tall/tight to to spin into the carrier and had to grind little arches on the bottom for them to sit down on the axle ends further. I’m like you though, keep EVERY part till you’re done and try to keep everything as tight as possible with no unnecessary slack 👏🏼
