Sorry , no airplanes this time ! I could not resist and filmed this little wonder during my visit to one of Kent's top tourist attractions! It is Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway
The The railway was the dream of millionaire racing drivers Captain John Edwards Presgrave ("Jack") Howey and Count Louis Zborowski. The RH&DR has been drawing crowds since it opened in 1927 and now operates the most complete collection of one-third full-sized steam locomotives in the world. These small but perfectly-formed trains, take just over an hour to complete the full journey from Hythe to Dungeness but there are opportunities to get off and explore along the way too. The natural starting place for a journey on the RH&DR is at its station in the historic and pretty town of Hythe. It’s one of six along the track, which stretches 13 miles across the picturesque Romney Marsh to Dungeness, one of the largest expanses of shingle in the world, a place of other-worldly beauty and a designated National Nature Reserve.
The fleet of ten original steam locomotives remain in service, each covering up to 10,000 miles (16,000 km) a year. The RH&DR is still the only user of the 4-8-2 Mountain type locomotive in the UK, with No 6 Samson and No 5 Hercules in regular service.
With several stations in between, all within walking distance of the beautiful Kent coastline, the railway gives passengers an opportunity to explore this unique corner of Kent. Coast & country walks, with all manner of wildlife & flora to be seen, cycle rides, medieval churches and iconic lighthouses are all on your doorstep.

This IS NOT A TOY. it was built for use as a public transport system and had both legally timetabled passenger trains, as well as freight ! And its 13 miles long (19 km) so connects a number of small towns along the coast. Just the land it stands on is valued at in excess of £150 MILLION, and its highly unlikely you would get a licence for such a public transport venture today.

There were tons of estate railroads like this connecting to full gauge stations and resources in town to both fetch and deliver goods for the manor, as well as transporting people to town and ferrying visitors from the full gauge back to the estate. I have an old book about narrow gauge with a lot of photos of these from the late 1800s and you can also see groundskeeper staff using it a work train to move lots of tools and dirt/plants etc. It’s a very usable and valid size, I would love my own for moving gravel and chopped tree bits around my house.

It gets even more awesome at the other end of the line. Most of it is double tracked and Hythe has a turntable and loco shed. As well as the six Pacific's loosely modelled on LNER prototypes there are two Canadian outline locos that are very impressive. The pulling power of these small locos pulling these long trains on a 26 mile round trip is also impressive although helped by the fact that the country is as flat as a pancake so no gradients stop

The Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway (RH&DR) is is the "Worlds Smallest Public Railway" which was opened in 1927 under a Government LAW. It runs for 13 miles along the Kent coast, linking a number of towns, and even though it is "small" has to comply with virtually all the same safety rules of the National Railway Network. It provided regular timetabled express & stopping passenger services as well as freight. So has a fleet of locomotives, which weigh up to 10 tons each, and daily haul trains weighing around 100 tons of carriages & passengers, that usually travel at 30 mph, although some are capable of speeds up to around 50 mph. Some of the locos, are one third full size replicas of the famous "Flying Scotsman", while others are miniatures of Canadian & German types. The railway was laid out, along the level coastline in this area, as a double track mainline to provide a public transport network. During World War Two, it was taken over by the Military, and even operated Armoured "Anti-Aircraft" trains, which spent there time shooting down German aircraft. At the end of the War it was publicly reopened by none other than Laurel & Hardy ! The locomotives are therefore now approaching 100 years old, and receive 10 yearly major rebuilds to keep them in the best of health. As they have to work hard and often clock up around 10,000 miles annually.

The slip-side to this is of course the Dungeness Nuclear Power station, so here we have the two main power generation technologies at either end of the spectrum a stone's throw from each other.

This came up on my recommendations today so a bit late commenting. I went on a tour of the power station back in the last century. They use heat from the Nuclear reactor. To generate steam then use the steam to run the turbines to generate the electricity. So they are on a similar part of the power generation spectrum.

NOT A "mini road crossing", this railway crosses a number of busy roads, in a handful of towns. And the law states road vehicles MUST give way to trains. Hence the crossings have barriers and warning lights like ANY road/rail crossing. These "little" locomotives weigh up to 10 tons, and we know from experience when they hit idiot car drivers, they destroy the car, and the loco come out virtually unscathed. The trains may be travelling at up to 30mph on certain crossings, & can be pulling a 100tons of coaches & passengers ! It is NOT A TOY many have made that mistake & been seriously injured or killed !!!

It is a Public Railway Company NOT A TOY. It was opened in 1927 to provide Passenger & freight services for 13 miles along the Kent coast linking a number of towns. A number of people both passengers & people trespassing on this railway have been seriously injured or killed, because they thought it was some sort of Toy !!! The locomotives weigh as much as 10 tons, and are regularly hauling trains of around 100 tons of carriages & passengers at speeds of usually 30mph. But they are capable of going significantly faster. When they hit cars on level crossings the cars are usually "written off" & the contents seriously injured or killed, while the locos have never received more than a scratch to their paintwork.

This is a full blown Railway Company operating a 13mile long railway connecting a number of coastal towns along the Kent coast. It was opened in 1927, has a whole fleet of locomotives and was built to provide a PUBLIC transport system for the region. Both passenger & freight. It is NOT A TOY, that idea has killed a number of people. The locos alone weigh as much as 10 tons & are capable of 50mph, although service trains usually do not exceed 30mph. These locos are quite capable of hauling 100tons of carriages & passengers.

It is a Public Railway Company NOT A TOY. It was opened in 1927 to provide Passenger & freight services for 13 miles along the Kent coast linking a number of towns. The locomotives weigh as much as 10 tons, and are regularly hauling trains of around 100 tons of carriages & passengers at speeds of usually 30mph. But they are capable of going significantly faster. Both express and stopping services run seven days a week, at roughly 45 minute intervals. The railway was laid out across this flat coastal area as a double track mainline for speed. Which is why the majority of the locos are of the "Pacific" express type with a 4-6-2 wheel arrangement. A number of them are designed as one third full size replicas of the famous "Flying Scotsman" !!

Steam locomotives are effectively motorised BOMBS because even these small locomotives operate at 180psi. If one exploded it would destroy everything within a few hundred yards radius, buildings, people, wildlife & road vehicles. Which is why the Drivers have to have the same years of training as Drivers on the National ail network. Steam locos are of course "red hot" when in steam, & the most common injuries are by ignorant members of the public touching a loco & getting badly burnt. So the rule is "Look but don't touch."

The Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway opened in 1927, as the "Worlds Smallest Public Railway". The line runs for 13 miles along the Kent coast linking a number of towns from Hythe to Dungeness. It was laid out as a Double track mainline for speed, and operated both passenger & freight services. Despite the small size of the trains it has to comply with the same safety rules of the "Full size" National Network. Which includes signalling. It has a fleet of 15 inch gauge locomotives mainly steam, that weigh in at around 10 tons each, that usually operate at speeds of around 30mph, but are capable of significantly higher speeds. They haul trains of up to 100 tons of carriages & passengers usually in formations of 11 or 12 coaches, but at busy holidays these can be extended often to 15 or more coaches. It even has catering & observation cars.
