I actually really liked this video. Not because you are in agony, but because its just way closer to my own experience. My hobby journey started around 2 years ago and this, while not being in the same situation with masking tape, is what i had to go through. You think about something and then, something else happens and you loose motivation. And I dont paint an entire army in 24 hours, even when broken up over a couple of days. I have a few hours here or there, so seeing your progress in a week of full time work takes a lot of pressure from me. What i would like to see next is how you tackle the issues and how you keep on pushing ahead through that dread of everything that went wrong. And its not because you suffer, but persevere in the end, having an insanely good paint job and pushing your abilities with the time you have.

This is probably one of the most relatable “paint an army” videos I’ve seen! I feel like I’m an incredibly slow painter compared to peers and content creators, but I’ve never liked the results of “paint quicker” methods and I like a certain result. Enjoyed this watch and felt your pain with the tape! Also, good job editor!

Showing the mould line removal and the close up shots of the finished bare plastic, talking about how many times you need to refil your airbrush, how long it takes to do everything even for a pro are things other people seem not to show. You showing all that is great.

Honestly? The bits of missing paint helps give a bit of character to the barges. Make it looks like they're damaged areas that have been repaired and filled in with spare parts! You can see this sort of deal with American bombers from WWII that were damaged by flak and patched up with spare ailerons and the like.

I have a lot of thoughts! Point 1: I also bought Molotow after watching Marco. The random stripping is for sure an effect I've experienced while using it. I haven't ever truly diagnosed why, but i have theories. If the model is wet at all, it will not cure properly, and that moisture spot will strip. If you don't mix the paint enough before hand, same deal. But, that being said, Molotow is not advertised or intended as a true primer. To the best of my knowledge, It doesn't have the same bonding material a true primer would that allows it to adhere to the unpainted surface as effectively. BUT, while not having the same physical resistance to tape, Molotow resists the oils on my grimy ass fingers and mineral spirit washes AMAZINGLY. (I've smudged rustoleum automotive with my *natural oils*, so this is not a light task). Point 2: In my professional experience, i swear by the blue frog tape instead of proper masking tape. The blue tape (to me) feels like it has a softer tack and never peels the paint off of the walls or miniatures I've used it on. I can't scientifically say they're different. I haven't done the research, just based on first-hand experience. Point 3: I feel this is a great way to springboard into a collab with Goobertown Hobbies to have a scientific deep dive about paint adhesion, what makes a "primer" different from a "paint" and how it varies across brands! Point 4: All that being said, RIP your Raider/Ravagers 😢. It sucks when stripping happens, and i hope you feel all of us at home sending our good vibes.

This is why I love your content. You don't seem to shy away from laying it bare, and raw, and very emotional. That's very powerful. I'm sure everyone has been where you've been, if not in the hobby then somewhere else in life. And we all need to be reminded that we're human, and life's a bitch sometimes, but still we carry on. Together, the burden is lessened. I hope you feel the love from the community, you certainly deserve it. And now, let's bring the next catastrophe! We're here for rain or shine!

I love the approach! If I'm honest I can't stand the clickbaity "Paint a million models in 24 hours!" videos. It's not how I enjoy the hobby at all. If you're spending a lot of money on models, you should slow down and take time to enjoy them instead of feeling like you have rush and get things 'done' as fast as possible.

No grief from me dude! At the end of the day, everyone has said it before, they are YOUR models. Do you paint them however you like, for however long you like. I do a lot of speed painting stuff, but I'm also just excited to get them to the table fully painted, and I still paint them up to a quality that I'm happy with. Probably not winning any paint awards, but that's fine with me. I also probably doomed myself when I low-key became affectionately known as "James Workshop" for all the models I have 🤣

Oh man.... I cannot express the amount of actual pain I felt watching the tape pull off the paint. That is SUCH a frustrating thing to deal with, not only because it's tearing off work you have already done, but now you have to deal with repainting and hiding the edges of where the paint didn't pull off. All that said, this was another FANTASTIC video! I really enjoyed the honest feelings/emotions throughout the video.

I think you are doing a great service with this upcoming series. It is good to see KZbin miniature channels encouraging folks to slow down and enjoy the hobby aspect, instead of trying to rush through armies to get their 10 VP on a fully painted army at a tournament (or whatever the reason may be). Society and life seems to be in a hurry lately, so encouraging people to slow down is not a bad thing.

One other tip for masking, to prevent any bleeding is to use as sharp a blade as you can. I either put a fresh blade in my scalpel or use the scissors I also use for cutting my decals. Avoids any fuzzy edges that can let paint seep under. And for your tip on batch painting, I did that for my aggressors very recently. Built all 6 got a good base layer of light grey down and then airbrushed on my increasingly white paints. Then went down the oil wash route. As a first time doing this and not just using tamiya panel liner (which I used a lot on my scale models cars) I wanted a practice. My varnish layer wasn't thick enough and during clean up I took off some white. Lesson learned! I then experimented with an acrylic using lots of contrast medium and pre washing the recesses with water to guide the capillary action. This was better and cleaner. And didn't need to wait for another varnish layer to dry. I may go back to the oil wash, but for my white scar successors I'm enjoying toning down the grim darkness of the far future. And it's a way of painting I enjoy while not being too slow!

As someone who's just finishing up a Necromunda gang I started painting a year ago, this is highly relatable. I find all the videos of people powering through entire army paint jobs in a day or two to be more demoralizing than motivating, making me feel like I shouldn't take the time to enjoy painting my models or put the work in to get a result I'm happy with. I'm excited to see more of this series, and if there's anyone who can salvage that gnarly masking tape situation it's you. Keep up the great work!

I recognize those molotovs! Marco Frissoni used them all the time - probably still does, haven't watched his videos in a while. He does often start with the airbrushed layers, then varnishes the entire model for oils, varnishes again, and then comes back with whatever his flavor of the month paint product trial is. I imagine there's a decent amount of varnish keeping those molotovs down on the model by the time he gets rough enough that they could potentially chip off.

GW profits from wargamers racing to have full armies painted and played with while rules are still relevant since an entire edition usually fully rotates in about 4-5 years. Some models also lose official support, and are discontinued. GW is financially incentivized to keep that grind going, and folks are rarely capable of keeping up. I think that's the largest reason why it's like that anyway.

Another fantastic video bud! If there is a silver lining to the paint stripping, it's that you determined the root cause and informed your viewers. You identified the issues and quickly came up with proactive solutions going forward. That approach is so incredibly valuable to new painters, to understand that sometimes we are ambitious and we try something different and but it doesn't work and we must persevere, learn from it, and take those lessons with us. That's what's important. Also, the pale tan / khaki and matte black aesthetic is SO sick dude!

Scott.... Awesome video! Love your work and your way to keep us motivated to keep building and painting. I like how you tried other ways to achieve your goal. Sometimes things don't go the way we planned. You didn't block yourself at the moment the masking tape pulled up the paint (sometimes the worst thing a painter has to deal with 😱). Also, I'm 100% with you when you mentioned that "you don't enjoy the methods of painting faster". A great friend and mentor in the hobby told me that "build what you like the way you like it". For me it has been my golden rule since I started building model kits for more than 30 years. For the masking tape Mr. Hobby has a low taking tape (blue one) and is thin. Also check on one of the Gundam stores, you will find precut masking tape in different shapes that will save you time and headaches. I have been using them for years without issues. There are a lot of tools from other types of model building that can help you a lot. Thank you again for your time and effort to help us to enjoy the hobby!!!!!

@6:30 You bet your sweet bippy I do! I paint armies for a studio in the states, and anything that keeps you from putting a tool down and picking something else up is golden for mass batch painting. I did 30x poxwalkers recently and I stuck each of those bad boys onto some poster tac and 30x small mdf model holders on a tray. Assembly line is boring, but it is the way when it's about time for your $$.

I mainly paint armies so I've been there. There are a lot of tips and tricks that allow me to paint one army per 5-6 weeks and the most important thing is to use a varnish in the middle of work and before masking. One more thing - just use a can of good primier, not speedpaint method with magenta/cyan, we need one solid prime. The most funny thing for me is that I was struggling with masking tape during painting Raiders xD

Hey Scott, I can totally relate to your experience here. Sometimes it feels like most of my precious hobby time is spend fixing my own stupid mistakes.

I have to say, showing a negative result in a KZbin video is really refreshing. No plan survives contact with paint. As someone who uses tape frequently to mask off areas, try pulling the tape off as close to 90 degrees as possible to lessen the chance of paint coming off

Great video! We've all been there that a plan we had for our miniatures didn't work out for whatever reason. Very relatable! And thank you Chris, great job by you also!

I'm right there with you, speed painting is efficient but the results always leave me wanting. When I see what you got done in a week I'm impressed, I'm a slow painter but I enjoy the process (at least when its going well 😅). I want to get faster but every time I tell myself I'm going to do this one quickly coz I dont care that much about it, I find something new to try and it still takes ages 😂

Loved this video! It was very relatable. I like that it was less instructional and more about your journey. It's also nice to see a youtuber do something at a pace more like mine.

i have a bunch of cities of sigmar cavalry and infantry. i spent an entire day on one, like eight hours, and honestly it was super fun. i dont like batch painting at all, i only ever enjoy painting single characterful minis. i painted a goblin warband and its my best work, just because each mini was done individually with care. thats how i paint minis, i do it cause i love it.

Dude, its looking really good - don't take crap from anyone, this video is great and as much as it hurts / sucks / is not great, it will be interesting to see how you are able to fix the issues and continue to move forward.

@Miniac I just had an idea for that sand wave under your flyer. If you were to try it again I would use fishing line or hair. Get it fixed into shape in the curve you want, then spray some glue and dust on it. You could maybe even do it like really long tufts of grass with a bunch of dirt on it. I dunno maybe wouldn't work, maybe it would.

Thank you for showing us moments of "weakness". Too many content creators only show perfect moments. And even if they show failures, they seem scripted. When the tape peeled of the paint, I wanted to give you a patt on you back and say: "It'll work out, don't you worry."

Im glad we're getting more content about how these "speed paint challenges" aren't realistic! Yea they're cool to watch but I can see how some would get overwhelmed by the idea of it
