This week Karyn is making false fronts for our model railroad background sound system. Just to dress them up so they don't look quite as utilitarian!
Karyn makes stuff like this by printing them out on the computer from photos or the internet and then cuts the prints out and folds and glues them into shapes.
The little jukeboxes will be mounted to the front or underside of the layout once the layout is mounted to the wall. For now, we have built just this one system, but the plan calls for about 5 of these systems around the layout.
This system plays three sounds, day birds, night frogs and crickets, and a jukebox party from Gus Rich's Lake Shore Lodge across the tracks.
We have been helped with the sound systems by Mark Howe, a subscriber here on the channel who has given a workshop on the subject at several conventions. He directed us to the Adafruit Sound Board. A simple way to store up to about 12 minutes of sound that can be triggered from up to 11 triggers.

Dale and Karyn: The patience it takes to perform such exacting tasks fled from me at least 50 years ago it seems. Yes, I could do the intricate work on hobby projects, but since I'm now just two full days away from my seventy-eighth birthday, not so much anymore. Oh hell, not at all anymore, whom am I kidding? It is truly refreshing to find capable adults, who have this kind of talent and expertise. I was an electronics kit builder in my youth. Maybe you might have some memory of Heath-kits or even Archer-kits from Radio Shack. How about Lafayette Radio Electronics, might they still be on your radar? I had spent weeks in my basement constructing a Stereo Power Amplifier for my home audio system. And guess what, the good people at Lafayette Radio didn't even short me, not even one little resister. Best of luck with the rest of this assembly project.

Not a lot of people would think about putting an active bar on their logging railroad. Of course a logger would think of that! I’m reminded of the tuber siding on the Rio Grande. It’s a great story about how tuber got its name. The guy that owned the local watering hole hand lettered a sign and stuck it down by the siding where the train crews would often be waiting for a meet. The sign read to bar with an arrow. Well his lettering wasn’t very good and it looked like tuber

We did that video quite a while back where we 3-D printed enclosures for speakers to put in our K 27‘s. What we did manage to prove is that it isn’t the speaker it’s the enclosure! So these little speakers that cost barely a dollar, and these little plastic enclosures which I think cost $1.50, come together and make a really nice sounding speaker! And it isn’t that I really tried to figure out I just simply guest what would be the proper backspace for a speaker of that configuration. Glued it in place with silicone rubber saw that it was truly airtight and even made sure that there was a proper seal on the little plastic box. And that’s about it! I’m just shocked at how good they sound!

Hey Karen, a helpful trick for when you are cutting paper or thin sheet stuff with an exacto knife, is use a sheet of glass as your cutting surface. You will get nice crisp cut lines. I learned this while helping a friend do art layouts on a light table for photographic work.

The two of you compliment each other quite well. Karyn has talents that you don't. That is a good thing. How ever that you worked for was stupid because you have talents that far exceed todays generation. Most of who don't want to work and when they do, do it half hearted. Dale, I love your episodes with the variety that you have, etc., etc., Never boring. By the way the story I heard about ACC glue was that it was developed for the Vietnam war to put wounds together quickly to reduce blood loss. Acetone is the ACC users best friend. Acetone (on MIBK, or MEK) will dissolve ACC. (One of my things is Polymer science). Loved the old Wurlitzer Juke Boxes. An age gone by.

Nice decorations. As I wrote last week in my comment that youtube removed, you used a different approach for the electronic, but now also for the speakers. I went for a mono speaker per sound scene, hidden in the layout, you have a stereo set for all sounds, with nice decoration. I like how the hobby permit different ways, both giving great results

Some where in the past I was told that Elmer's glue was made from the dregs left from the pasteurization and purifying process of cows milk. ( the part that stuck to the heating tank sides) That's why kids don't get sick if they eat it. I have no proof, but it makes more sense than made from hooves. I have seen REAL animal glue and it is nasty, looks nasty, smells nasty and has to be heated to work. Once again, the unique skills of the Angle family is displayed. Great video, as always.

Forgot to mention your selection of Dean Martin's "Volarie" as such a good choice and so appropriate. The reverb was great also. So many details

@ToyManTelevision 3 жыл бұрын
You may have noticed I had to take volari out! I left it in on the original one but we got a copyright strike on that for using that in spite of my best effort‘s to disguise it. Anyway no harm it just means that the dean Martin estate gets whatever money that movie makes if any! On the railroad of course volari is the soundtrack! Not the piece that we chose here to cover it up.

Karyn: That is such a neat trick to get a 3D affect from 2D. Elmers glue is poly vinyl acetate glue (a 40/60 water emulsion). Don't remember how Borders expanded from dairy to chemicals but they did. Make be it was the need for glues for cartons and shazam (Bob's your Uncle) a new company is created. Far to neat. We are older but we are no dead. Rock on!

heres some of what goes along the lines of your theories of what elmers glue is made of. casein When first introduced in 1947 as Cascorez Glue, Elmer's glue contained casein from dairy milk. However over the second half of the 20th century, synthetic glue has become less expensive, more consistent from bottle to bottle, and lasts longer. Elmer's does not currently use animals or animal parts to make glue.
