I had my Minpin for 15.5 yrs. I never trained him, he just ‘knew’ things. For example, he immediately knew to use the newspaper as a wee wee pad. I miss him & figure I always will.

I've had two miniature pinschers and absolutely love the breed. so much so that we just got another one. I've always wanted a Doberman but I've never gotten one. I always had German shorthair pointers and Min pins. We've been without any dogs for a little over a year and decided to get another Min Pin to be a part of the family. I was looking for a fishing buddy, something small to take along on my kayak and hang out with me at work. Someday I'll have the Doberman I have always wanted but the timing just isn't right yet.

You need to do a video on the German Pincher , it’s one of the original breeds used to produce the modern day Doberman ours is 13 months old 42 lbs and is constantly being mistaken for a young Doberman. Thanks great channel!!!

Our miniature pinscher, Simon, passed a few years back, We lucked into finding two min-pin brothers. We named them Si and Mon - and they have lived up to their tribute to the original Simon!. These beautiful little creatures bring so much joy into our lives. I call them my monkeys because they are so curious about everything - just like curious george. My partner wants to eventually get a doberman, but I'm not sold - to big for our small home. So convince me!

Have raised both, I can tell ya one thing. Even without any dna to relate them, the miniatures do embody the complete attitude of the standard Doberman. The rust pup we had was over the top in small dog compensation. He would take flying leaps at peoples hands if they would put them down to their side while walking by one of the many house plants he had buried a dog bone in. We are talking like 6-8 feet of flight time.
@markrichardson1657

how do they not share DNA, homie in Germany created the doberman pinscher to be a bigger min pin, because he felt a bigger min pin would be a good guard dog.

You leave out the most important part Miniature Pinscher is hundreds of years older than dobermans. And miniature pinschers are working dogs, designed to be a ratter on German farms. Docked tails came about for tax collector's purposes. Undock we're farm dogs, docked we're pets and subject to a luxury tax. If you are going to make a video on something make it right.

Great video. We had MinPin for 14yrs(Spike passed Feb 22) and we have a min pin mix. But if you really done the research.... A German named Doberman took a Minpin and German Pinscher and breed up with other breeds to produce a "Doberman Pinscher" . Min Pins are an older breed than the Doberman. Spike would have growled at you if you called him an Miniature Doberman. Lol

We've had 2 female min pins, litter mates for 16+ years. Sadly, one just passed away yesterday 💔. Super smart, rugged, exceptionally healthy, little dogs with big personalities! We also have a male Euro Dobie, 2.5 yrs old. Both breeds wonderful, food hounds for sure, but quite different in many ways. ❤️ I read somewhere that the min-pins were popular kitchen dogs - great ratters. Also, locally (Florida) there was a K9 search team (drugs) comprised of a min pin and a Dobie - the min pin would search ductwork, crawls spaces, etc., while the Dobie covered the rest.

I've been breeding and showing my Miniature Pinschers for about 18 yrs now. When I had my Rotties the pups would climb on top of the Rotties because they are heating pads! Never sit on a blanket on a chair or couch unless you completely lift the blanket completely or you will smash them. Min Pins love their owner and basically hates everyone unless you constantly get them out. They tolerate a judge but barely touching them. They will fence fight with a coyote. The best show dogs happen to be the Reds. Most of the B/R's make great couch potatoes. I have Reds because the very few Blacks I've had temperment wise were soft and structure was not good but their Red littermates were amazing. So much to say and not enough time. 😂. I'm off to the shows this morning. Showing 2 Reds and one Black...not sure how the Black will mature but right now he needs to get more leg under him because he's a long tube at the minute... he's only 6 months old so we will see if he stays in my breeding program. Also the croup on a Miniature Pinschers is level not rounded like the example you have up. American style vs German is huge as well.

When my Dobbie passed away I looked at Min Pins but soon realised they are a very different breed (not just in size). In the UK we also have Manchester Terriers and English Toy Terriers. They differ in size (Manchester Terriers are sizeably larger than Min Pins) are one of the oldest and increasingly rare dog breed.

Yay Sunday! Love having breakfast to your vids! Def don’t let it discourage u if you live in an apt you can definitely still have a full size Doberman but I do want to stress the “easily gets bored” part! Our boxer can entertain herself for HOURS with toys (ball esp!) but my 9 month old Doberman gets bored FAST! he will play fetch like 3 times before he begins whining or loses interest so apart from daily exercise and walk definitely fit in obedience training and find more challenging games! Lately took out my Simon says color wheel game and trying to get him to touch on the right color! This more challenging idea definitely keeps him hooked a bit longer! A neighbor has a miniature pin. but idk if I’m partial haha but full size dovies FTW! ❤️

Min pins are awesome, I had one, he was amazing. And my wife's parents used to breed them as well and currently have one. We have an older Boston Terrier and don't want to stress him out by bringing another pup in. So will wait till he's gone and then prob get another Min Pin. (since the Dobe with the kids didn't work out and had to give her up, took month months to get over that loss and failure). Once the Boston goes though (my wifes dog really) it will be the first time since I was maybe 10 years old that I didn't have a dog in the house. Everyone since the one I had at 10, I've always had 1-2 dogs and they've all overlapped for the last 35 years or so.

@@DobermanPlanet Yea that Dobe was the show pick of the show litter too , Gorgeous female who was 90lbs when I gave her up. She was very sharp, but HIGHLY reactive with a very high prey drive, but I had trained most of the reactiveness out of her. I mean that girl was on alert like i've never seen a dog. Even the breeder (one of the countries top for past 20 or so years) even mentioned she was more of a guard dog than anything else (after she had taken her back). She was as true to old school bred Dobermans as I ever saw. This dobe would notice a leaf floating across the street 100 yards away or a plane way up in the sky. Things i've never seen my other dobes or any other breeds I've had notice or pay attention to. She was with my 3 kids (ages 2-6) from when she was 3 months old to about 13 months. But she just didn't respect them, even though they were so careful and respectful of her. She loved them but it was on her terms. She could play all day with them but they all go to sit down on couch, and she would jump up to lie down beside one of them, and theyd go to pet her and she'd growl at them. It was the strangest thing I've ever seen, she would CHOOSE to lie down beside them and then growl at them when they sometimes pet her or were simply getting up to walk away from her. We did have a couple snaps which was the reason I couldn't take anymore chances. She didn't hurt them but it was scary and you gotta do what you have to when it comes to protecting small children. None of my other 3 previous dobes had issues with children, but I also didn't raise any of those 3 dobes while raising 3 crazy little ones at same time. Looking back, there isn't much I can think I could have done differently, except keeping her off the couch or bed to make sure she knew she was below the kids on the pecking order, since those were the spots where the "snaps" happened.

I met a few min pins. They are hyper little monsters! These tiny dogs could keep up with my boxers. I have a 5 months old Dobie puppy and I'm surprised that he's not as energetic as my boxers. He's active, but not off the wall crazy. You're right, my Dobie isn't very reactive to other dogs. But he is showing signs of protection. Not in a reactive way. More like a deterrent kind of way. Good video. I love German breeds. Have had German breeds pretty much all my life. Your channel has made me appreciate the Doberman a lot more. The one thing I wish I knew was that their intelligence is not an overstatement. They really are incredibly intelligent to the point that it's scary. How quickly they are able to learn new commands and tricks is above and beyond what I was used to working with Boxers. Like housebreaking in 3 weeks? I would have thought that was impossible until my Bruce proved me wrong. I would love to see more videos about what "work" we could have our Dobie pups can do besides just obedience training (which is ridiculously easy with this breed) and trick training.

Perhaps you can do a follow up that includes comparison with the German Pinscher breed as well. I was drawn to this before I took the leap & got a doberman, but am often thinking of what might have been with a slightly smaller breed. Size made a difference to the gender I chose. Dobermans being larger, I chose a female, but a male German Pinscher was my alternative. There were other factors which were considered.

I have a Manchester terrier, and I've owned Dobermans in the past. Manchester terriers are an old breed that I understand contributed to the Doberman. Our Manchester is, indeed, the spitting image of a Doberman except the rear end curves down slightly. Intelligence is extreme, at least rivalling that of the Doberman. She is MUCH more high-strung, however. Dobermans are not the easiest dogs to train, in spite of their intelligence. My Manchester was very difficult to train because of her high-strung nature. Neither dog needs the mind-numbing repetition that most breeds require. They catch on quickly, but then you have to get into the weeds to explore every permutation of the command you want them to learn. A less intelligent dog will just get into the habit of doing what you want, and not question it so much. I wanted a Doberman, but my wife wanted a dog to cuddle on her lap. Our Manchester is 17 lbs. Having trained many animals (dogs, horses, cats), I am a very capable dog trainer. Our Manchester terrier required all of my abilities and then some. I would not recommend the Manchester terrier to anyone not willing to put in the effort to train their dog. You owe it to the dog and to the people around you.

On occasion (including now) I Take care of my friends shih tzu and Chihuahua and while I love them both, I am a big dog fan all the way. My Doberman tolerates them when they are here and it is no problem having them, but I feel like my Doberman is much less maintenance. The Chihuahua will pee and poop in the house whenever she feels so you have to always keep an eye on the clock and take her out frequently. My Doberman gives me clear signals as to what he wants and I don’t have to carry him when I am in a hurry!

Great video as always John! You can see how people would draw the comparison but there are definitely differences that go beyond their size. Could you do a video discussing the differences between the Doberman and the Manchester terrier? That’s another breed I often see compared to the Doberman. I was very impressed when I saw one at the Westminster dog show a few years ago. Keep up the good work 👍

Why crop the tail though, if it's a toy lol, the dog uses it for communication.

my mom passed away 2 years ago. she had a min pin. the dogs name is Molly. she hasn't been the same since my mom passed. she doesn't really even like to leave my mom's bed. my dad can only get her to leave sometimes. she baiscially leaves to eat and use the bathroom. Can't get her to go on walks or anything ever since. yea she got better over time. but it's obvios she is really depressed. idk what to do for her. she won't even let anyone go near the side of the bed my mom used to sleep on. she is really protective of that side of my dad's bed. is there any tips you have that I could do to help her. thanks for the good content. keep up the good work.

I downsized😂 after having staffys. My main reason was after having all my dogs reach old age I found their weight became an issue for me and them as they got older and lost their mobility. The little dog is easy to pick up and take to the vet. I would put staffys as my all time favourite breed, the min pin is just a more practical choice for me.

Indeed The Miniature pincher is not closely related to the Doberman But it’s more closely related to the standard pincher a.k.a. the German pincher and like the German pincher the miniature pincher has more terrier in it and both of these two dogs are also closer related to the schnauzers

Thank you for the video! Mostly agree, but I've gotta add a big similarity: both my dobie and minpin love to be dressed, and both absolutely need clothes for the cold! Dobermans are hands-down more loyal and devoted, but min pins are just... funnier. They got that comedy instinct you just can't teach. Personally I can't have one without the other. ❤

“Not likely to wander off and explore“ SO not my dog. He is Dog Houdini and will get out of any collar or vest you try to put on him. He is so social and dying to meet everyone he sees. Although, he is definitely a homebody. Try to figure out that dichotomy One year and 100 pounds

You should check the Toy Manchester Terrier/English Toy Terrier. I had a Doberman and now I have an ETT. They are pretty similar in many ways. 😂 Also, we are thinking about getting a third dog and I’m advocating for a Doberman because they are awesome. Also it’s going to be so cool to go hiking with and ETT and a Doberman. 😂 Cheers 🍻!

Your video is so far off from center. I have a pack of 7 miniature pinschers and they do everything as a pack. If anything dobermans are a large miniature pinscher not the other way around since min pins are so much older.

the 2 have nothing to do with each other. Loot drive is much higher on a min pin, they are excellent rat hunters. And the prey drive of a Doberman is extremely low compared to a German or Belgian Shepherd. This fits in with his character trait of defensive drive of the family, owner. The Doberman is more responsive to defense than prey drive. The mini is not actually a hero, he flees when threatened and has a soft character. Breeding minis is a selection for small, not for character, small and beautiful is more important for breeders. They are healthy, mine lived to be 14 years old and a Doberman can be happy if it lives to 9 years. I have had 4 Dobers and 1 mini. Participated in 3 world championships with Schutzhund 3 and 1x German Sieger. So I think I know the differences... by the way, the mini is very trainable, she walked perfectly next to me, sitting and doing exercises and tracking, she really enjoyed it. A super nice breed next to the Doberman when you take it on the street...people look surprised. A nice breed that I had a lot of fun with, but absolutely nothing of a Doberman other than the looks

Min Pins are great and even if not directly related to the Doberman, they share the same bravery and Heart (as you said they have the same ancestors). Here a funny question: could you do a protection-/Guard-Dog training with them? Has anybody done this with a Min Pin? 🙂

The Zwergpinscher (Miniature Pinscher for our can't speak anything but English pals) was a WORKING breed in Germany for at least 100 years before the Doberman existed. There's nothing "Toy" or "Companion breed" about them - 'Merica! 🤣🤣🤣
