I have been following/watching your videos and channel since the very beginning. You have been a tremendous help to my family to get great insights of the breed. We finally got our first Doberman in Spring from a reputable breeder after waiting for quite some time. It was so worth it!! Hands down. Best dog we have ever owned(as family). He is amazing- super smart, obedient, loving, athletic yet calm and stoic!!:)). I 100% agree with what you have mentioned in this video. Thank you John for making wonderful videos!

Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games kzbin.infoUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU and I can see a difference in his confidence already! I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!

When I feel financially prepared, I can't wait to own one of these guys! I find that the "intimidating" look of the dobie can be good in some training situations. I work as a dog trainer at the moment and it can sometimes be annoying when random people try to come up and pet the dog we're working with in the middle of the session.

On the topic of aggressive perception... almost every aggressive dog I've ever met was actually a Labrador Retriever that wasn't trained well. My lab was an absolute mess when we first rescued him, but 2 years of intense retraining turned him into the sweetest boy in the park. I've noticed some people get a lab because they assume it will come automatically socialized and trained, and therefor never put in the work to make sure that dog actually DOES behave. It has definitely made me more cautious around canines.

I love your videos!! My Dobi is cooking as we speak, resting peacefully in his mommy’s tummy due to pop out in March and I can hardly wait. I live alone because I prefer it that way and because I am an ugly man but my dogs think I am as handsome as Tom Selleck. I am retired now so my life centers here at home with my dogs and the activities around what I call a big yard it is the perfect place for a dog like a Doberman. I love it when my dogs interact with me. I have had three boxers and two Pit Bull Terriers and all have been unique and special in their own way. The most important thing I have found is this uniqueness and the separate distinct personality of each companion I have been blessed with, people not so much. Dogs do not hide who they are, they are not selfish or greedy with themselves. They will freely be who they are without pretense or hidden agendas. They need your love and everything that goes with it and in return they will love you right back. It is truly a wonderful thing to connect with your dog, nothing quite like it.

I became an 'accidental' owner of an American Doberman puppy and can say all these points you've mentioned are true. My dog (still under a year old) is turning into a wonderful companion and yes they have high energy but are so trainable it's amazing. They are definitely 'velcro' dogs and they WILL want to be stuck to you like glue everywhere but not in a needy whiny way. Your videos have helped me along the way with a very busy schedule, trying to understand how best to work with my dog and train with little free time. I know this sounds odd but I noticed a definite uptick in 'trainability' and 'bond' once I allowed my dog to sleep on my bed. I normally would shut the bedroom door and all would be well until maybe predawn and then the door scratching would start, but no, he didn't need to go potty. I had always thought it not a good idea to let a dog sleep on the bed but he never assumes he can just jump up, waits until I'm done brushing teeth etc and then will still wait for my 'ok' command to jump up. Minds his manners and doesn't fuss and keep me awake. He won't even eat his food unless I give him his 'ok'! These dogs are the smartest! And a comment on the 'out of place' - I had a friend over who was playing with my dog and meanwhile I slid under my car with wrenches to work on something, was focused on that. Supposedly my dog ran around a shed playing then suddenly saw 'someone' under 'his car' and my friend said the hair went up on his neck and he was actively barking and angling in to see what was going on. I thought they were just playing and I was ready to slide out from under the car anyway and once I did my dog stopped barking and came up covering me with licks and happy yips. It's good to know he realized this was not 'normal' in his scan of the property and he acted accordingly. He's still a puppy but the sky's the limit in teaching and training these dogs! They definitely look to please their owners, are highly aware of their surroundings and alert. If a person can't handle a 'new member' of the family they must interact with respectfully and fairly they're better off getting another breed! Dobies are for life loyal!

Another awesome video. You are absolutely correct when you said the most important thing you can do during that first year is acclimate them to EVERYTHING possible. We started taking our pup for walks at 10 weeks of age. This included walking her at night near a busy four lane street (but not too close) where she got use to seeing headlights, high traffic sounds, motorcycles, bike riders, walkers, etc. We also walked her in the rain. We also took her to stores where we encouraged anyone and everyone to pet her. She accepts dog treats from the cashiers at our local pet stores. She's groomed so strangers touch her feet to clip her nails. She's 18 months old now and we still do all these things (and many other things too). She is perfection.

I've had two Doberman's (at different times) as a child. I loved them both. The female named Angel (lol) was a bit more aggressive with people who weren't members of our family. Funny thing...she just KNEW our property line automatically. We lived on an acre and a half. I was always amazed at that, because we never taught her. She just never stepped a foot over the line unless we were taking her somewhere. When I heard you talking about your dog (in this video) I was delighted to learn that was just a normal Doberman trait. Our family didn't really know much about Doberman's back then. My older brother just brought her home one day. She was a puppy. Too bad we didn't have the internet (it was 40 plus years ago) or anyone to helpl us with training tips. She did nip people who came onto our property if we weren't outside. She wasn't extremely aggressive. Her nips never drew blood but kept people out of the yard. I realize we didn't know to socialize her. One day when she was 5-ish, she attacked and killed a stray cat. I was at school and when I came home my mom had gotten rid of her because watching the cat attack terrified her. I understand where my mom was coming from but I sure wish we'd just known how to train her etc in the beginning. So my advice to others is MAKE SURE to watch these videos and learn all you can about training a Doberman correctly. I WOULD ABSOLUTELY have another Dobie!!! They are awesome dogs! In fact we had another one later on and he was a bit more gentle. Sadly a nearby farmer shot him. 😪 Thanks for doing these videos!!! 😁♥️

He is fawn and tan and a very gentle soul, hate loud voices and will put himself to bed. Because he is fawn and tan people don’t realise he is a Doberman. Your channel is amazing learning loads.

My 5 month old Dobermann pup (European.. just a Dobermann over here)is a joy! She is an absolute sweetheart. Yes she is always by my side wherever I go.. She doesn't destroy her toys. And loves playing with other dogs. She is very friendly. Unless it's dark out. Then she is a different animal. So far I'd say it has been pretty easy. But we will definitely have to work on separation.

There's also Doberman Rescues, Im involved in Rescue so Im a big advocate for saving these dogs, you"d be surprised at how many GSD and Dobermans end up in shelters(not justpitbulls, and Ive owned many), the wrong people get these dogs from breeders for the wrong reasons especially on the West Coast, I enjoy your videos , they"re honest and educational, you"re a a great spokesperson for the breed

Well, I didn't have any real choice about my Doberman. He chose me. He was an abandoned dog roaming the countryside and showed up at my house in the country and decided to stay. He was about a year old at the time. So I didn't have any of the puppy concerns to deal with. However, he was completely undisciplined and pretty crazy when he first arrived. If I had not found this channel, I would probably have gotten rid of him. I'm glad I didn't. He's my family now. He's been with me a little over a year now. At least I didn't have to pay $2000 for him. I have no idea what kind of breeder he came from. I can't really say for sure he's a purebred, but definitely looks like one. He's a "red" Dobie (actually chocolate colored).

Its why i havent purchased a puppy yet. I thought $2600 CAD was a lot 11 years ago when i bought my Dobe. Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and pay that if i want buy from a reputable breeder that does health testing and temperament testing.

one time was a very young child, so young i do not remember it. I somehow got out of the house when my mother was showering... We had two dobermans at the time mom and son. My mom got out of the shower minutes after i had escaped and instantly started panicking. She ran out of the house to look down the street and see my two year old self and my two dobermans circling around me protecting me making sure i was safe. Ever since ive heard that story/ growing up around them my whole life really made me lock in the fact its the bread im going to go with. I cant believe it to this day that there natural instinct was to protect me... Best dogs ever !!

Babysitting a Doberwoman about 2 years old. She's a total love sponge, but LORDY, what a velcro dog! Very intelligent, very easily taught, eager to learn, very eager to please. Started new routine with her because she showed some separation troubles - When I leave, I take her to the gate with me, and before I close the gate I pet her, tell her what a good girl she is, tell her to stay and be good, then leave. Somehow, I think she gets this, and the troubles have gone away - plus, she's now figured out that I DO come back.

Pros: the unconditional love they have for you and you have for them. Con: ?? Can't think of any for my Girl, she's not just my best friend but a true companion for life!!! My Doberman Layla she actually saved my Daughter's life by barking and jumping up on her bedroom door when it was closed to get my attention when my Daughter was sick on night at 3:45 am. My Daughter got sick and had her bedroom door closed she was sleeping on her back and got sick and threw up and aspirated and blocked her airway. Layla immediately saw she was in danger and began to jump up and scratching the door and barking very aggressive which was out of caricature. It woke me up instantly and was able to get to my Daughter and clean her airway.

In my experience you leave them taped leave the rods in there for 5 days take them out let the ears are out for a couple of days put the rods in again for 3 to 5 days let them are out again and you keep doing this until the ears are staying up really nice if you notice one ear is not staying up make sure you tape it again my dog's ears came out beautiful and I was taping them myself the last two or three times because of work and stuff like that good luck with your new puppy

How much approximately would I have to spend for 3 Dobermans that would be with me from when they're 1 month old to when they're 10 years old?? Counting up all the things like food, health/beauty products, veterinarian(count in vaccinating, eventual illnessess, monthly check ups), toys, etc. And how many times a year should I go to a vet? Monthly, more often, not often enough?? And also will having 3 of them be fine?? won't they fight each other? when should I start training them?

Nice Video... I had a doberman growing up..We got her in 1981 when I was in 7th grad from a local guard dog supply company.. she was a malnourished 7 week old pup and had rickets disease... she thrived after we got her.. She lived to be 16 years old... She was a great dog... I was wondering what you think about adopting an older doberman.. possibly a rescue dog.. I am at a point in life that I would really enjoy having a mature doberman that enjoys leisure time as much or more than heavy exercise... I am more likely to enjoy taking a dog for a daily walk instead of a long hike. Are older dobermans still able to be trained for simple obedience.. ( leash, heal, sit, etc...?) Thank you again, and I have really enjoyed your videos.

Wow 16 years old is VERY impressive! What a great story. Yeah I think a rescue dog is a GREAT idea and they can certainly still be trained. They might be a little more stuck in their ways due to habit but they are more focused when they're older and trainable for that reason. So I think it all balances out. The only time I recommend hesitation with a rescue dog is if you have small kids in the house. Did you see my video on Doberman rescues? Have you tried a jolly ball? Usually they are meant for horses, but some of the smaller, squishier ones are great for dogs. My previous dog was an Ackbash/Pyrenees mix. He regularly stripped the bark off of firewood, destroyed tug toys, ate a hole in the wall, and swallowed entire socks as a puppy... Lol, not so destructive as an adult. Finding a toy big enough and durable enough was a challenge. The jolly ball lasted his entire lifetime, though. We used the heck outta that thing.
