It’s small, quiet and mesmerizing to watch. On a 20ml (0.68fl oz) water refill it can run for 30 minutes! And I simply couldn’t resist it to add some Arduino.

Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. I was thinking of photo resistors or a rotary encoder. This is much simpler.

Ha, yeah - didn't end as I thought it would, but that works nicely too!

I remember building a bigger version of this while at school....This is dainty and a talking piece you can set up in your house.... Nice video

I measure RPM with Arduino by adding a small black tape to the wheel, and measure the time between light intensity changes using a photo-transistor.

I only had an LED and a potentiometer in the spare parts drawer ;-)

When the RPM drops to 0 have the Arduino turn on a small fan to blow out the candle. Then an IR sensor to measure the heat from the candle and turn off the fan.

What a cool little machine! To measure the rpm i thought you were going to put the LED on one side of the flywheel holes, and gave a light sensor on the other side of the holes that detects the flashing. Great video!

I'll bet the little engine could drive a fan made with nerf blades. Of course, you'd have to shield the candle to keep the fan from blowing it out. And, with a shield, I would bet a tea candle would work as the shield would direct most of the heat up.

Add a dynamo and a LED, and you can make artificial light out of natural light.

Any tips to get the D2 to work? Mine is stopping after 10 seconds or less. Thanks

I was guessing that it was running something 1800-2000 RPM by its sound. Now I know its true :-)

How many watts of energy could this generate? What if you hooked it up to a tiny dc motor?

No is just left to do the optimization that it can run on a tea candle ;-)

Did you just assume it wasn't or can't run at 3600 rpm or did you test it in some way?
@Joop_Brokking5 жыл бұрын
I tested the rpm with an oscilloscope, a sound recorder and a slow mo video. All returned approximately 1800 rpm. But indeed, you always need to double the strobe frequency to be 100% sure.

Can you also measure the torque with the Arduino ?
@eddydogleg5 жыл бұрын
You could with a moment arm and strain gauge. It would be tricky on an engine as small as the one in this video. Could you do it by replacing the flywheel with the rotor of a brushless motor then using the current from the brushless motor into a load bank calculate a torque?
