For the second time today I get to witness the quality of the way things were made in the past. Digging through the Attic getting rid of some old things, we found an old cap gun from the 1960s made by Paris the 5891 model. Still in all its original Glory with all of the springs and mechanisms still working flawlessly. I actually happen to have some ring caps here because I'm a muzzleloader Hunter and sometimes I make my own percussion caps which these can be used for by adding a little bit of alcohol wetted 3 fff powder. I test fired the gun which still snaps and gave me all of the joy of those nostalgic days although those days were before my time. For something this old to still have springs and mechanisms that works so smoothly and flawlessly; really speaks to the quality of craftsmanship even with toys back in the day. Today's era things are made to be thrown away. They are made to break. They are made for convenience and disposability. Really makes you miss the days of old.

Very professional instructive video of a beautiful Wilesco D16 steam engine restoration. The end result is stunning, keeping it as close as possible to the original. Especially your "japaning" with help of spraypaint and a syringe I found quite inventive. I still have a Wilesco D20 that I bought new in 1981 for 200 Dutch Guilders. It needs a lot of TLC. It has not run for at least 15 years. Your video is perfect for giving me the right pointers.👌

I'm always amazed at the absolute insane design, the extend of engineering applied to a child's toy, at a time where manufacturing was certainly not as cheap as today... Also the massive amount of work !

I was imagining the engineer who made this in the 1950's. Quite an great feat of miniature engineering.

I was given one of these when I was a tot back in the early seventies. It was a wonderful toy. It's been a pleasure to watch you restore it to its former glory. Thank you very much! :o)

Wilesco made a less-elaborate version of this, which I've had since childhood. It doesn't have the boiler sight-glass or the separate worker figure, and the whole thing is a bit more compact. This video has inspired me to pull it out the box, clean it up, and see what happens. Hard to believe these were marketed to kids... but kids back then were much more acquainted with working with their hands. And rather than putting a protective barrier around every potential danger, parents taught 'em the inherent risks in working with high heat and flammables. Not saying it was better (or maybe I am), but it certainly was a different time.

I'm pretty sure that this (or a very similar model) was still available in the 80's (with a dynamo). I remember seeing it in a mail-order catalogue.

These are still made and sold today. There is a version where four poles and a canopy roof mount to the four holes in the corners of the blue base. And accessories like electric lights, heaters, sawmills...
