I do wear a lot of silver jewelry every single day: I have realized I don't do it to give other people a specific impression of what I am, not even to express my style or look cute. It's like an armor to me, it makes me feel protected against the world, it gives me the strength to smile and be tough. I have health issues, and there are so many things I had to give up to in my life, but my when I polish my silver and take care of it I feel like a little child playing with the most beautiful toys in the world. I love how every person is different, thank you so much for sharing your point of view!

"because they think they have to" this is where I'm at with earrings. My preference is to wear one ring (wedding) and one necklace (has sentimental meaning to me) and no other jewelry. But there is this kind of image that one doesn't look put together without earrings, so sometimes I end up wearing them even though they annoy me. I would like to be not wearing them anymore! You know what I really appreciate about the way you frame your points is you always say something like "this is what I do and why, but you should apply minimalism in the way that makes sense in your own life" and you don't try to pressure people who watch to have the exact same lifestyle as you. That I think is a very kind and rational way to put things.

Okay, are you me? Promise to tell me if you're actually me. I won't tell, I promise. So I have all my life tried to figure myself out. I had a goth area, I pierced my ears, my face, i wore cool uncomfortable clothes, I dyed my hair and wore jewelry and makeup. But with time, it got less and less. I think I just wanted something to express a picture of myself, that i wasn't just like everyone else. But now I have realized that I am not like everyone else, I'm just me. Most of my life, I have used my hair to express myself, because my long, curly locks was the thing that everyone knew me as. So I shaved it off, and I still do. I only wear makeup for special occasions, never in a regular day. And I have struggled with jewelry addiction, it gave me such joy buying something to change my appearance. but since I started working at a restaurant where I am not allowed to wear jewelry, it has gotten me thinking that i don't need jewelry. And after I watched your video, I actually decluttered my jewelry box and gave most of it to my sister. i still have some, but most of them are gifts that means a lot to me or things that just are pretty new and it feels like a waste to throw them out already. And now i try to avoid wearing jewelry, it's hard, but I'm managing. Baby steps. Thank you.

I told my mother in law not to bring presents when she comes for visiting. She came and brought me jewelry. Beautiful jewelry I have to admit. But i told her then that i don't wear earrings anymore. She asked me why that is. I couldn't really tell her why not. It's more the unanswered question why should I in the first place. I used to wear earrings in the past. But after giving birth to two kids and not wearing jewelry for some time, i started to wonder why i still kept some, even though I'm not really interested in wearing them. Such a stupid little question, but i couldn't tell whether i stopped it because i got annoyed that women wear it to look 'nice', but men don't have to; or whether I actually liked it, but didn't want to be seen as 'nice'. I then asked myself the question: would i wear jewelry if i was alone on this planet? The answer was clear, i wouldn't. And that was it then. Other people like jewelry, but I'm not one of them. I think it's weird that I used to put stuff through my ears. If i didn't have holes already, i would never think of punching holes into my ears now. It's a weird thing to do...

I completely agree! My experience has been similar. I don’t wear any makeup except my lip balm which is tinted red/pink and can go on lips and cheeks if I want. I found that every time I would try to put makeup on I just felt not myself, and I would take it immediately off again. The feeling on having bare skin makes me feel like not only can my skin breathe, but I can breathe too! I do have a pair of earrings from my mom. I wear them 24/7 for a few months, then take them off for a few months so I really don’t have to think about them at all. Thank you so much for your KZbin channel! I find it very refreshing and it’s one of the only that I watch :)

I have been practicing minimalism for about 4 years now and I love challenging myself to let go of things for periods of time to see what I personally like for myself and not society driven. I have done jewlery and it is freeing to not have to put it on everyday. Lol the one thing I keep going back to is nail polish!🙃 I keep decluttering and then buy more later! I think it really is the act of painting them that I like. But someday I would love for it to be a phase of the past.

Thanks for another great video! I do enjoy wearing some jewellery, but in the last year I ended up not wearing any, or hardly ever. I would normally wear my wedding rings all the time, without taking them off, but they were damaged when I injured my hand a couple of years ago and I still haven’t repaired them. I enjoy earrings, too, but I’ve not been wearing any since the pandemic and our house move as it’s just one less thing to think about every day. It’s been the same with make up actually, I used to wear mascara every day for example and always struggling to find zero waste options for it, now I’ve not used it in months and I’m not missing it! I think I will not give up my jewellery completely, and I will definitely have my rings repaired soon, but it’s been liberating to be able to skip these things to simplify my life in these weird times!

Thanks for sharing, lovely to see how you came to your personal decisions about jewelry. My piercings (the only jewelry I have) also act as stim toys, so they actually are really valuable for me! I am the opposite. growing up jewelry wasn't allowed, makeup wasn't acceptable and clothing was forced feminine ( turns out I like femme clothes but only if i get to CHOSE it). My style has evolved and the majority of my jewelry pieces are recycled or thrift-ed and I love each piece pretty dearly. When I quit fast fashion I also vowed to quit fast jewelry as those claire's and forever 21 things just FALL apart. I declutter my jewlery every year and rarely buy new (to me) peices. However fashion and clothes has become a BIG part of how I express myself and I have even taken to turning thrifted cloth into clothes to get the EXACT looks I want without....you know slave labor and environmental ruin.... I'm happy that you've found what works for you!

Jewelry used to be kind of like decoration... But I never cared to spend time in the morning for it. So I ended up having a lot of options, but I used very little. I decluttered my jewelry last year and most of the things I kept meant something for me. I don't wear makeup either, sometimes I may wear lipstick to a party or something like that. I've come to the conclusion as well that makeup or other decorations don't make me look prettier. Just different, and I'm not quite used to how they make me look. The jewelry I kept has some other meaning besides how it looks; my confirmation crosses, a silver necklace I bought from a Peruvian artisan, a lucky elephant I got from my sister, a bead neck piece my Greenlandic friend gave me to remember her from. I wear them when it feels like the right moment. But like with other things, with minimalism kind of comes the desire to strip decorations.

I am at a point where minimalism is hard. I only started truly reflecting on my possessions this summer as a result of the lockdown. I have makeup that I am not using but don't want to part with because it has not expired yet and with Covid, I don't feel comfortable giving them to anyone. I have decluttered a lot of my jewelry. A lot of costume pieces I was holding onto because they were given to me as gifts. I am trying to be patient and. use what I have and in most cases realizing I do not need to repurchase the item if it breaks or expires. I enjoy your videos, Lia because they keep me motivated and your perspective helps me detach slowly from the things I am having a hard time getting rid of.

I can totally understand that! I often felt this way, not wanting to part with some things and patiently waiting for other things to be used up so I can declutter them. Haha, cool! You should elaborate on your obsession with authenticity. Wouldn't be too bad of a topic as well... I think, mininalism and authenticity are very much related. But I can't really put a finger on it.... I find that I am "myself" with AND without my makeup and/or styles. I prefer the simple styles as well. But I've recently rediscovered individual makeup ideas, and I love it. I suppressed my need to express being different for so long, it's actually quite liberating to do so through such a simple ritual as putting on makeup or jewelry. Sounds cheesy, I know. It's weirdly true though 😅

Interesting subject! I have no ambition not to have jewellery though my own choices are few and almost always sentimental. I wear my wedding ring and I had my grandmother's wedding ring made into a bracelet which I also usually wear, plus some freshwater pearl earrings my husband bought me many years ago (maybe 25 or so) and another ring he bought me more recently. He likes to buy me jewellery and because he enjoys getting it for me, I like wearing it - of course, I also like the pieces!! There are limits, though, and I just have one small box to keep it in and don't want it to be too full. The amazing thing about the two necklaces I wear most is that the simple polished sapphires are millions of years old, it's fascinating. So I own a bit more jewellery myself, I guess, but my dilemma now is that I have inherited a lot of very high end jewellery that isn't my style, nor really that of my daughters, so I have to figure out what to do with it if I'm not going to enjoy wearing it!! The resale value is very bad, unfortunately, but older generations used to think it was a sort of "insurance" they could sell if they fell upon hard times... times change :o

I was a jewellery junkie for most of my life. I sold a lot of it (and donated some), but still have a crazy amount that I no longer wear. The amount of money I have spent over decades is pretty shocking. Once you own it, it is really tough to sell plus it takes a lot of time and energy. Now in my 60s, I love the 'naked look too'. I do wear a bit of make up but wearing no jewellery is very liberating!

@@ecofriendlia - I agree, but in my case, when looking back at the amount of jewellery (and other things) that were mainly bought on impulse, I realise that I wasted probably who knows, 100,000 on things that were really not necessary, and I could have easily lived without. Very wasteful on my part. On the bright side, I have eliminated about 90% of my possessions over the last years and am now down to a minimal amount. The trunk of my car has 3 large boxes of books/buddha's which will be sent next week to an animal charity in France. I just put all of my favourite books on Amazon Kindle. Having a lot of possessions is a complete nightmare and the terrible mental torture one continuously goes through to let them go. "Possessions are in the saddle, and ride mankind" !!!

I still own a few pieces of silver jewelry which I wear sometimes (sold all the rest) and some gold family jewelry which holds a sentimental value to me, but the whole amount is so small, it perfectly fits a very small box that I keep on my chest of drawers. I never was very fond of real or costume jewelry anyway, since college I've been even more basic in my style and jewelry wouldn't fit with jeans and sweaters in my opinion.

Our 4 year old gets a book, a pyjama, a toy and a warm jeans with fluffy fabric inside. ) With grandparants we work with a list of things we need so we don't get a bunch of stuff . The first year they got us sooooooooooooo much.. So we talked to them about why we wanted a bit less and don't always need brand new stuff. Now they understand. They even look for second hand toys instead of everything brand new :)

I wear jewellery occasionally mostly silver jewellery and I have a few sentimental pieces I inherited from my Mum, I don't think I could ever declutter my jewellery as most of it is all sentimental or given as special occasion gifts, I think thats the one section I have trouble practising minimalism with. The jewellery is something that I'll pass down to my nieces eventually as a lot of it is special pieces that are from there Nana :) :) I don't tend to buy new jewellery or custome jewellery and I have put a temporary ban on receiving any new jewellery as gifts, but I love what I have and use what I have which is the important bit :) :)

Why do people love art, music, gardens, flowers, sculptures, paintings, nice clothes, well arranged meals...? Because BEAUTY makes us HAPPY. Jewelry is not neccessary but is beautiful. Humans can and do appreciate beautiful things and that's one of the things that makes us human. Furthermore, extremes of any kind are often signs of imbalance and are not very healthy. I like the idea of living with less, purchasing purposefully, avoiding wastefulness but all those "minimalists' who only wear one gray T shirt, count their socks and underwear, and make weekly long lists of things they 'declutter' make me wonder if they are obsessed with 'stuff' even more than an average person.
