Here in Switzerland we have tree nurseries that deliver the tree in a pot and come and pick it up again. During the year they take care of the tree and the next Christmas they deliver it again to you for the holidays and so forth. If the tree becomes to large for your living room, you can switch it out for a smaller one. The trees get planted in the forest when they retire from being a Christmas tree. Now you could argue the cost of driving it back and forth. I would wager that it is still the most sustainable option available.

As far as trees go, we bought a fake one 27 years ago. (I live in Austria.) I never thought it would last this long! It doesn’t look too good when you take it out of the box and every year I think that it’ll be the last year for it, but once it’s decorated, I am always amazed at how great it looks! The “needles” have a paper texture to them. (Not plastic) When I was a child we always had a real tree and I loved the smell but I just can’t justify cutting a tree down for a few weeks. I love Alex Baer’s description of what they do in Switzerland!

A few years ago I made these paper ornaments for our tree and we love them so much I am back this year because we want a few more. My husband said we should make one for an event we are attending where we have to take an ornament for the tree. No tree can have just one of these so I'm taking a few. I use cardstock instead of paper and they store well from year to year. I don't know which is more sustainable for trees, but we choose to cut down our own fresh tree each year. It never disappoints and is a favorite activity of ours. Thank you for such simple and beautiful ideas!

Very relaxing to watch! The city I live in (in Canada) takes the used Christmas trees to create mulch for the gardens around the city. I personally have used both real and fake trees. When you think of having to ship a plastic tree from China then eventually throw it out (they aren't made to last forever), I prefer to support a local grower and buy a real tree which can be reused as firewood or mulch

I've recently discovered your channel, and have watched this Christmas video for the first time. Now I am yearning for Christmas to come again quickly! I am just in de-cluttering phase 1, as all of our children (I have three boys and my husband has three of his own) are grown and out of the house. My husband is half Swedish, and lives by the less-is-more mantra, but I've come from a more fill every surface and wall with things I love world. I am, though, enjoying deciding which things I love the most, and having less to clean around. It's beginning to become addicting-to see 'what else' I can live without. The biggest challenge, now, is seeing all of the beautiful Scandinavian decor and and wanting to buy some before I'm ready. Must purge before I can then indulge. Love your style, funny comments and quips, and simple wardrobe philosophy. You've got me thinking, and becoming more and more excited about simplifying the number of choices, decisions, and 'extra' wasted minutes I could be using for more enjoyment and peace. I'm looking forward to retiring in a year or two, and would love to be where you are now-after what will be 38 years of teaching, I am drooling at the prospect of a relaxing, stress free lifestyle. I'm steadily working through all of your videos. Thank you.

Hi Benita. Your little Christmas tree looks very much like a Norfolk Island pine. My family had one of these for a potted Christmas tree during my childhood. It was as close to a proper Tannenbaum that we could get at that time in tropical Queensland, Australia. Every year my father would bring it in and we would make a mad mess of decorating it. After Christmas, he would carry it back out to its spot in the back yard where it would happily wait to be the centre of attention again. When it grew too tall, he planted it, but even after, it was always known as 'the Christmas tree'. A happy and safe Christmas season to you and all. ❤️

People tend to forget white as a great Christmas color. White lights, white candles, white paper decorations, white flowers. Very elegant. And peaceful. Move over red and green! I also like that you don't put up a lot of words as decoration. I used to like the large calligraphy words like Peace, Love, Hope. But they catch my eye too much and I can't help reading them multiple times per day. So now I focus on just one word for a while, and take them down completely most of the time. The items are the symbols now. I like how you are aware of protecting your eyes from becoming over-stimulated. If I want to be dazzled by Christmas decorations I go to a Christmas store and soak it all in for a while. And maybe buy just one item a year to swap out something I am tired of.

In the past I've had it up a couple of weeks at the most but this year I'd like to put it up Advent 1st and take it down just before New Years. The only tree that would last that long is an Abies Fir which I'm not that into. That's why I'm thinking a great quality fake tree that I'll keep for at least a decade. I'm so torn. Last year I ended up with no tree because of the same conundrum.

I always loved a fresh tree put up the first week in December, but hated trying to keep it alive and all the falling needles. One year I reluctantly bought a very expensive fake on sale at a great price three days before Christmas and I have never gone back! It always looks beautiful and is so easy! Now I buy a wreath each year for that good evergreen pine smell. Best of both worlds!
