This is the difference between your VLOG and others, George looks like a normal dog, one that know intimately every mud puddle, swamp, canal etc He is always looking wet and muddy, AND ALWAYS happy. George is not always looking like he just came from the groomers like so many other more Professional Vloggers. I prefer your style now as I see more the real life side of Narrowboating. I will never be able to do it but I enjoy watching your journey. Thanks

The National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas is an absolute must see - it is not often they get these things right, but they made a pretty damn good job on this one. Also, see George has learned a new command 'Chill' lol

George has turned into a very accomplished, professional scene-stealer, and it's obvious that he is doted upon by both of you. I know you'd say that you were the lucky ones to be chosen for him by the rescue centre, but he's definitely a lucky lad to have been placed with you, and it's a pleasure to watch your videos.

I was extremely lucky to see that Vulcan which I believe to be the one you talked about seeing in the museum. I was at Silverstone motor circuit in 2015 as it was a Peugeot owners day put on by the company and I just happened to look in the sky and think 'WOW'. I'd never seen a Vulcan before but being a bit of an anorak, I knew exactly what it was. There was a fantastic Flypast which I don't believe was intended for us, it was just showing off as it was the last flight of the season for XH558 before it was to be grounded forever. I feel forever lucky for seeing it. It's brilliant that you saw it in the museum. I believe there are 2 or 3 which are able to still taxi on special occasions but I'm not exactly sure where they are now based (2021)

I always love seeing Vulkans… one of my strongest memories of childhood was watching one thundering above me at the Abbotsford International Airshow. And there are 4 in taxiable condition, sadly none will likely ever fly again. Wikipedia has a good summary of the surviving airframes: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_surviving_Avro_Vulcans M

Amazing bit of reversing - narrowboats don't do reversing very well
@MinimalList4 жыл бұрын
They’re not great at it, though to be fair we’re lucky and have a boat with a well designed rear swim, so once you get used to the prop walk and the effect of the rudder it’s not too hard. I’m sure there’s a lot of boats I couldn’t possibly pull that off in. M

EARWASH canal it's pronounced as 'Errywash' I grew up within walking distance of the end of the Erewash canal, I spent many hours walking my neighbours dog along there but I only ever saw a couple of boats which spent there days moored at Langley Mill.

Lack of traffic might be why the boaters get the pronunciation wrong… for some reason few venture all the way up to the Mill. M

Impressive reversing skills! And George is the star...as usual....especially of the outtakes this time. Are you all anywhere near where the breach in the canal occurred? Pics of that look really scary! Wishing you pleasant weather and smooth sailing until next time!
@MinimalList6 жыл бұрын
Thank you. No, not very close to the breach at all, thankfully. It effected a fairly small stretch of canal, so really big impact on the people within it, and anyone planning on going down that stretch needs to make a large detour, but it actually could have been a lot worse. M
@luanncrownover46 жыл бұрын

Lichfield is a nice city but a bus ride from the canal. having visited Coventry you can see what Coventry cathedral was like originally as LichfielD cathedral was meant to be very similar. Stratford and the south Stratford canal are worth a visit, but a bit of a dead end on the network unless you are doing the Avon ring so you might want to head down the Avon to Gloucester then back up the seven to Worcester and into Birmingham via tardibrig (because we know you love locks). You then have a choice, continue on the Worcester canal and visit cadburys or the north Stratford for the blue bell cider house at earlswood.
@MinimalList6 жыл бұрын
That's our problem, we're spoilt for choice!! M

Great video as usual. Twice now you have passed by Charity Dock and haven't mentioned it. Don't bother mooring in Nuneaton, although Starline boats are worth the stop for fuel. Personally I wouldn't even walk George through it, full of dog mess. Lovely mooring just after the Springwood Haven Marina or Hartshill just after the wharf. Atherstone flight part way down there is a country mooring between Locks 9 and 10 or after Bradley Green. Loads more if you want them. Have a great trip.

Hah, thanks, all good to know! Of course we'd just passed Starline by the time we got this. As for Charity Dock ... well, let's just say it's interesting, and I wish I knew some do the story behind it (and especially the old hills lying on the bottom), but didn't know what to say as such. M

We do hope to hit the Chesterfield and Yorkshire (Jo's father is from there), but it'll probably be later rather than sooner. We have some appointments coming up that makes it best for us to turn south from Nottingham, swinging past Market Harborough, which is why we're thinking of that big ring. But we'll get there eventually! M

As an Apairist, I only got to cruise after September every yr. Once we revovated the cottage, (which has a paddock and morring rights on the whitham, I hope to get a NB and do a complet strip out, or get a sail away. might even open organic veg and egg shop on river bank in old stables..lol
@MinimalList6 жыл бұрын
That sounds like it'd be a great setup, though I hope the stables will be well mucked out before the veg shop opens. There's such a thing as too organic! M

The battle of Bosworth during the war of the roses a battle was faught there where king Richard the third famously said a sword! A sword my kingdom for a sword! His remains were recently discovered in a car park in Leicester! I visited the battle fields as a school boy back in........a very long time ago! I'm now 55 lol

Go and explore Birmingham home to the jewelry quarter,the gun quarter, important history relevent to the English civil war _Aston hall etc. In days gone by main city in the UK for car and motorcycle manufacturing as well as small arms manufacturing. Great museums,Cadbury world and, most importantly the central hub for the English canal network

We used to put the old chimney on to travel but now it is at the bottom of the Stratford.

Poor George, he has such a hard life and well done with the race over the tunnel Jo. What is your interest in the Air Museum Michael?
@MinimalList6 жыл бұрын
My dad was a flight engineer, and I'm an air and space buff... I try to visit anything related to flight or space exploration, especially if it's for something I haven't seen before (like an intact Vulcan). M
@grahamBearman16 жыл бұрын
That is interesting Michael, my own interests lie with anything to do with transport but mainly heritage steam power.
@MinimalList6 жыл бұрын
I find steam fascinating, but for some reason it's flight and spaceflight that really gets my attention. Which is funny, since I'm terrified of flying! M
@MinimalList6 жыл бұрын
I've no idea how long the Vulcan has been there on display, but it's sitting right beside a Blue Streak stand-off nuke, and it's nose is one of the only planes visible from the road. There's a lot of good displays, but it's smallish and reminds me of the one at Naval Station Miramar, near San Diego. My favorite of all time, though, is the Udhazy Center of the Smithsonian, where I saw the Enola Gay. M
@grahamBearman16 жыл бұрын
Wow, I can't imagine if I was afraid of working steam locos or driving a steam launch. Gee life would be so boring! Maybe I would have had to come to England and live on a narrow boat!!!! :D

Avoid Birmingham and go to Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire, in Birmingham you can get your boat trashed by kids, and clear your prop of rubbish every ten mins.
@MinimalList6 жыл бұрын
Isn't that a vital part of the true boating experience? M
@llessibm6 жыл бұрын
The GU into Birmingham is quite direct but as the previous post suggests it’s not what you call scenic - the Stratford and then Bham & Worcs is far more pleasant - don’t cross the city off your list as the place has a rich history but don’t moor in the suburbs
@AdrianJeens6 жыл бұрын
I am surprised that the officials of the city allow such vandalism and rubbish on the canals in and around Birmingham, it certainly dose not help confidants in any visitors to the area, i for one will not visit such a place. I am sure there are some wonderful people that live close to the canals, that never litter or allow vandalism, but unfortunately there are too many other people who live in the suburbs and the city centre that allow their kids to run wild, and everyone seem to use the canals as a litter bin.
@miketipping15836 жыл бұрын
Birmingham canals are vast so you're missing out on a very large and interesting part of the network by avoiding it. There are safe and dodgy places in every city but by scaring off boaters with perceived problems it'll never get any better. Birmingham is no more dodgy than London, but in London there are a lot more boats to keep an eye out for trouble.
@MinimalList6 жыл бұрын
To be fair, the vandalism and fly tipping seems to be a problem in every urban area. It's not going to dissuade us from visiting, though. M

Tried in vain to post this on your last video and get it seen . . your app not showing it u said? Anyway cut/pasted it and trying again: *Vegetable Chilli with Dark Beer and Chocolate* . . . here we go ↓ ↓ ↓ Ingredients; 1 Spanish Onion, 1 Red Pepper, 3 Carrots, 4 Garlic Cloves, 1 Red Chilli Pepper, 3 tbsp Olive Oil, 200g cooked canned Black Beans (Mexican not Chinese) , 200g cooked canned Kidney Beans, 1 tsp Oregano, 1 tsp ground Cumin, 1 tsp smoked Paprika, 1 tsp Salt, 250 ml Pale Ale or Dark Lager, 150 ml Vegetable Broth, 350g chopped Tomatoes (we used canned), 2 tsp Tomato Puree, 50g Dark Chocolate ( mine had sea salt in and was ok) *_2 diced potatoes medium size (optional)_ Method Chop onion, pepper, carrots into medium dice. Add olive oil to pot on medium heat, sweat onion for 3 mins. Add rest of veges, beans, herbs and spices and fry for 5 mins. Deglaze the pot with beer and broth and stir in the tomatoes, tomato puree and chocolate. Cover with lid and stew for 45 mins. Take lid off and reduce for further 15 minutes. * _I added 2 diced medium potatoes to the stew after 10 mins of cooking time much to the annoyance of "the chef" but it really worked and thickened it up imo and made it more filling, but this is really random and optional._ I ate it with toasted farmers bread. If you both enjoy this as much as I did then just pass it on to somebody else so they can enjoy it too. Bon Appetite.

That does sound pretty good, I wonder if I could adapt it to cook on the stove. Will give it a try and let you know! Jo
@chriscross95056 жыл бұрын
Yeah, pretty sure you could. Hope it works out, it was really delicious. If you add the potatoes then 100% only need one pot for a full meal. Vege chilli can be pretty bland but this was full of flavor. Good luck.
