Man, seeing that isometric angle was so nostalgic, though i never found out about the mini map, and yet somehow I still beat the game, at the ripe young age of like 6, don't ask me how, I musta got my sister to beat it, which was the same with Cars on the DS, from what I remember ( and yes i still have the game, but I refuse to hunt for it) its mostly a collection of mini games, with the piston cup being the only race in the game, but what was cool is that you'd actually get tyre wear and you'd need to pit, and there'd be this neat little mini game, where you replace Lightnings tyres, which I always just hamfisted my way through by tapping the screen. Definitely worth a check though.

In the first GBA Cars game, you CAN actually play as other characters, though only on levels you've already beaten. You can play as Lightning McQueen, Doc Hudson, The King or Chick Hicks (who is crazy fast, IIRC).

Cars 1 on GBA was my childhood, same with Cars 1 and Mater's National Championship on PS2. Revisiting Cars on GBA, actually using the brakes and letting off the throttle through turns makes the game handle a lot better.

Cars for the GBA was one of the first games I got as a kid that was my own, not my older brothers, mine. I spent a lot of time with it but never finished it as it was pretty hard and just obnoxious to control. Still, seeing that footage gave me major nostalgia. You could play as other cars in Cars 1 GBA but you could only play as them if you revisited any of the levels. I remember Chick Hicks being the final character you unlocked and he was super overpowered compared to Lightning. Weird game.

In the first cars game you can play king chick hicks and someone else i forgot each with their own paintings. Chick Hicks being the fastest but hardest to control.

The fact of GBA version of original Cars has only 4 playable characters that are unlocked upon defeating them and they are accessible after you complete a race as Lightning McQueen The following characters are - Doc Hudson (he's one of the easiest to control) - The King - Chick Hicks (really fast character)

I got both these games as a kid, for the gba, but what I found interesting is that on my version of the first cars gba game, (the isometric one) I was able to play as multiple cars including, doc Hudson, chick hicks, and the blue one based off of the Plymouth superbird (forgot his name tho) while in the emulated version shown here, it's only McQueen

these games are also on the DS but the original cars game is different from what I remember. I had the DS ports when I was a kid and I think the cars game was more like a minigame collection? Mater-national for DS is almost like the GBA port but with bigger tracks? a drifting mechanic where you can save your boost, and custom skins. I'm pretty sure there was more to it but that's all I could remember in the DS ports. Hope to see a video about those ports!

Top Gear Rally was the game that got me back into playing the GBA (well and my PSP dying). I stumbled upon it when I was looking at GBA racing games and was like, the GBA can do 3D? Take my money! And that started a real downward spiral of buying 3D GBA games, including Wing Commander Prophecy, because what the GBA really needed was a space combat _simulator_ with 3D textured polygons and full 360 digree movement!
