Minimum Wage: FG's N62,000 Proposal a Joke, a Collective Insult to Nigerian Workers - Ezediaro

N62,000 will not do anything for a Nigerian worker today. FG's claim that N62,000 represents a 100% increase from the last minimum wage is disingenuous because the value of N30,000 in 2019 is higher than the value of N62,000 proposed today. However
Labour needs to understand the realities we live in now, N494k or N250k will not fly in this economy.

Reduce the cost of governance. The governors should be looking for ways to improve and increase the income flow of their citizens. They were not elected to only manage allocation’s but to also improve productivity, business environments, strategies for the future of their states. They should be more visionary. What plans are they making to bring into existence to generate new revenue streams. Our politicians are just managers.

This is my own view in all of this, at what point are we going to reconsider Price Control ? Because without that even if salary is increased 100% inflationary forces remain insurmountable . When a tree is cut and not uprooted it will germinate again and that is the bottom line. Here in diaspora, prices of commodities are fixed and brilliantly backed up with Tariff. No one is born so legitimate and so powerful to violate the Rule of Law in diaspora he will be forgotten in Jail. How will 60, 000 be sustainable in a situation whereby inflation is in the Neighbourhood of 2000% ? Something must be done expeditiously to end every second inflation. That is the Predator !!!

Lol.. you cant do that in a system where you didnt supoort the efforts of the producers. How did you subsidize cement for, or raw materials or give stable and subsidsed power to run his/her business that you would be thinking of coming to regulate the price at which he sells his final products..? After he might have even spent hell to your police in trying to transport his goods from the North to South? Your govt shud just do the basics.. stabilise power, provide hood security nationwide, good roads, rails and other basic infrastructures, reform your police and make them stop giving businesses headaches with their bribes in the road (cos that contributes to production cost too).. do these basic things and you will see influx of private investors into the productive field and you will see supplus of goods at the downstream market, and when that supply is more than expected, you naturally will see prices come down. Its just basic Eco 101

It is a complicated situation, govt won't pay because they feel they display a set of half baked work force, their workers are not up to par and they compare their workers with their personal staff which they can treat anyhow, what a pity, I wonder how the economy will ever be transformed, when there is an inherent disregard for her work force whom are responsible for propelling the economy to greatness. No one is against the N62,000 if the price of commodities in the market was regulated, housing units for workers was accessible in part competition with private ones, the primary health care section were functioning with the workers considered and the educational sector if not free was at least affordable for civil servants amongst other things. With the behavior of our leaders, I see no hope in sight for greatness they lost, when the giant of Africa became a laughing stock amongst the league of Nations with a despicable comparison with a country like Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda and other African countries doing remarkably well, taking strides in the right direction to show that there is an African dream to be realized besides the heart wrenching assertions being meted on the populace by our so called leaders.

The Labor leaders are clueless. Increasing minimum wage will be met with price increases across the board. The Labor leaders should accept this amount in addition to social benefit packages that will cover healthcare, housing ,transportation, and food. These benefits can be digitally managed and the levels of benefit should be based on income levels and household sizes. These packages should be financed by the FG and should benefit both public and private sector employees. What use will it be if minimum wage is raised to 250 or 450k and there are price increases that erases the wage increase??

Is there no punishment from the law for any Governors or organizations that fail to pay minimum wage? See how they are proud to say they can't pay and some couldn't even pay the 30k. Shame

The greatest problem with us is that the average Nigerian is not courageous enough to stand for the truth. For selfish reasons everybody wants to be seen to be in the good books of a non performing government. For example the learned gentle man, lawyer only mentioned tourism and hospitality in Cross River as one area for productivity improvement. What of the other key industries like Agriculture, manufacturing, food and beverages, textile and foot wear, pharmaceuticals, Construction, Atomobile, and services etc. He was shy to mention provision of basic infrastructure like electricity, fuel, roads, water etc. Productivity improvements can not be possible under such harsh and unfriendly business environment. If the four dilapidated refineries and over thirty power plants and bad roads can be fixed, Productivity will rise astromicaly and unemployment rate , exchange rate , inflation rate and poor salary and wages and other economic indicators will naturally stabilise.

Listening to this guest at your morning show suggesting that labour unions should fight for increased productivity, proves to me that he doesn’t know what he is talking about, on this point at least. If labour fights for increased productivity what would be the duty or responsibility of the employers and government? His argument proves that in Nigeria we very good at misplacing priority and assigning the right jobs to the wrong people. As for the state governments who claim they can’t pay, it is because they waste state funds on playing Father Christmas to their friends and partners in the crime of defrauding their states. What a shame!

The solution to guard against sellers raising their price upon increase in wages is to have the Federal Government establish a Price and Wages Control within 14 days of the announcement of the new living minimum wage. Pass legislation with penalty financial, or jail. I am sure that you have competent economists’ social scientists including the Labour Union with integrity to fill the commission and effectively enforce the law.

I am in no way an adviser of the government, but I'll tell you to focus on the transport infrastructure to caution the fuel subsidy removal, putting in as much as you have to make it easy and extremely convenient to move from point A to point B anywhere in Nigeria. Achieve that and sit back and watch how Nigerians would turn things around for the economy, all by themselves. This is not all it takes, but there has to be a starting point. Avoid trying to accomplish too many things at once. If not, any negotiations would be a sweet tooth at the moment, but the effects and consequences would catch on faster than you know and with more devastating consequences. Higher inflation. My Two Cents.

It is completely ridiculous wen i hear dat increasing salaries is impossible without downsizing employees. While national assembly and govt annually increased dia salaries, allowances & incomes, did dey reduce the number of senators, house of reps, ministers and other cohorts? 30k as @2019 wen it was approved as minimum wage was worth 95dollar. Same 95dollar is worth 142k. Therefore, without even increasing d minimum wage, if Govt was to pay same 95dollar worth of minimum wage, worker should b getting nothing less dan N142,000 as minimum wage. If a state says it will borrow before it can pay, den so be it. If any state says it cannot pay, dat state shld be dessolved and merged with other state and stop all these rubbish..wot nonsense??

A high (rightly high) minimum wage will cripple the economy. Workers will be laid off in droves. Let us be smart. Reduce the government official's pecks to quarterly, find money and pay the people cost of living payments. Going the minimum wage route is just following a wrong direction.!!
