I really wonder why Sergey risked such a very sharp line with white against Magnus in such a shape? Of course its playable by theory, but its very difficult to play on the board as you have to play very very accuratly with the white pieces where for black there is quite a straight forward plan. And as seen in the game, slowly but surly (too) many Queen moves even back to it's starting position, totally against any basic chess rule anyone is telling you. And in the end, it was proven in only 39 moves why its a basic general chess rule. Impressive nevertheless and to be honoured too, such nice games can only exist if both players are out for risking something, so most respect to both of them.

3:39 -- Ne5 first over castling is better, but Ne5 first leads to drawish endgames even though the line also features castling later with an undefended h-pawn. White is still preferred in either case, however, so Black will need to obfuscate and hope for a blunder. 4:41 -- c5 is a "small" mistake, but one with glacially escalating consequences as Black's currently blockaded and isolated d-pawn is not only cramping his dark-square bishop, but is a point of future exploitable weakness. c5 brings the pawn to the c-file after exchanges, where it'll join into a Black queenside pawn-storm (assuming Black doesn't pursue mating ideas after further White blunders, as happened in this game). The best move for White here was Qd1. 4:54 -- Magnus has a knack for identifying slightly less optimal lines but ones in which his opponents have fewer good responses -- and c4 here serves that purpose nicely (over the sturdier Re8) because the best reply by White is Qc2, pinning his own e4 knight. The apparently worthy alternative move of Nc3 merely unleashes Black's dark-square bishop and results in the White queen being jammed onto the other side of the board away from her king and unable to readily come to his defense. But nobody likes an enemy bishop x-raying their queen through a pinned piece, so Karjakin picked Nc3, and White is now behind in the position. 5:12 -- Instead of the quite solid c5, Re8, Bd6, and an especially irksome Nd3 were also excellent options here. You know you're enjoying a nice game when all of the "obviously good" moves available to you are in fact truly good moves and not latent blunders revealed by subsequent play. 5:19 -- The harassing c4 isn't Black's best move here, as the White knight on c3 is presently a useless piece with nowhere to go. After c4, Magnus cedes the advantage that Black temporarily enjoyed -- but he'll get it right back, because (see "knack" discussion above). 6:30 -- The problem with Qd4 is that a "very nice" defense is not sufficient here, as only the best will do, and it is Kh2 (which flatly prevents Qh3, and the White e2 bishop is poised to intercept any knight checks from f3 or g4). 6:41 -- f4 is a blunder, as it is the enemy bishop on e4 that is currently the most dangerous piece, not the knight on e5. Forcing the bishop to retreat opens the rest of the 4th rank to the White queen (such as to f4, where she can pursue a trade, among other means of ending the mating threat). Attacking the black knight merely prompts its move to d3 (following the intervening queen movements), where it gains "monster" status threatening everything, keeping the a4 knight out of the game, and transforming the White queen on d4 into a de-facto dark-square bishop due to pieces sitting on all of the orthogonally-adjacent light squares next to her. 7:52 -- Karjakin is likely acutely aware that his position is inferior, but it's not outright lost prior to Bg4. The simple fact of the matter is that there are too many enemy units near his king, and that his pieces cannot maneuver. Bxd3 to seize the monster knight was his best move. 8:03 -- Karjakin's position is now so bad that the engine would prefer he just let Carlson gobble pawns rather than futilely attempt to defend them with implosive moves such as Qg2. The game is frankly resignable by now, but Karjakin has his "I will be World Champion!" big talk to live up to as well as the white pieces, and so goes through the motions until it's clear to even the most oblivious that he's lost. (Paradoxically, resigning right here would have been not only a gracious acknowledgment of Carlson's superior game, but make the unspoken statement, "Hey, I knew I was losing before you dopes in the peanut-gallery did, so there is that, and I'm also not going to insult this man's intelligence by plodding onward as if I thought he'd be dumb enough to fall for some desperate, last-ditch gambit!") 8:17 -- "very little you can do about it" since the monster knight prevents a Re1 counter-response. 8:52 -- Kh2 is such a valueless move that the engine doesn't even contemplate it. White is hopelessly lost (over -8 at depth 20 while only down a pawn), and has been for so time. Carlson is just toying and purring by now. 9:15 -- See? This is what happens whenever you accept a "free" pawn from Carlson. (The last several reviewed Carlson games have had such a feature, and in all cases his opponent went into an inferior position by capturing.)
