Playing fir a draw has NEVER worked out for me. it always results in passive, defensive chess that I end up losing after playing a VERY long game. I played in my county chess club championship in 2018 b.c.(Before Covid) and was doing extremely well. I was in the semi-finals, and the other semifinal ended much quicker than mine. The guy who won it was someone I beat regularly, so I was really excited that I could actually win this tournament. My semi had two games left, and all I needed was half a point to wrap it up. Just one draw in either game and I was on to the final. Bottom line, I played for a draw and lost the first game in a 104 moves. I had the decency to lose the second game in only 45. Decided then to never play for the draw again.

See these are the types of games I sort of dont enjoy as much as others just in terms of raw chess brilliance and skill over the board. Its clear that pretty much the entire game for Dubov was all just memorisation of his home preparation. Which dont get me wrong is still an astounding testament to the incredible mental capacity all top level players possess and just as important as any other factor. Now however the elite level of this era are almost forced to only play a certain small amount of chess openings because of just how much more objectively stronger and solidified over any others. Couple that with the aid of super computers or AI engines and chess will become more a battle of the best memories rather than tactical skill or stratergy
