What would the basic hull minus engine, controls, etc run for the Candu Jr? This would make a great small boat for Manatee Watch patrols in the Crystal River area and would provide great exposure for your yard.

Hi, really beautiful work. I'm getting ready to restore a plywood Candu-EZ stretched to 16ft. Do you have an idea what the minimum power to plane it would be, with a light load? The 50hp one looks to be doing amazingly well but is overkill for what I'm looking for. Do you know cruising and top speed for this 15hp version? Thanks!

We didn't test with a GPS, but I would estimate 4 or five knots cruising (at displacement speeds, obviously). The vessel we put the 5o hp. Honda on was meant to tow a load; it just happened to plane. I recon it would plane with 35 to 40 hp. Heck, it might even do so with 25, but you'd be on your own. I study boats, but I'm no naval architect. A normal planing vessels a flat run to the transom and is usually square (or close to it) both in plan and elevation. A rounded stern in plan is far from ideal and even the Bartender, with a pointy stern has sponsons below the waterline to give the run of the bottom an effective planing surface. Bottom line is, the Candu-EZ was never meant to plane. Have fun with your restoration! They're a great little boat.
