If you put soap and water in a spray bottle you can use that to wet your skin and hair, wipe with your towel, and rinse as you normally do or put a few holes in the cap of a water bottle and rinse off. You will use even less water.

Hi, I like your new set up a lot. I would love to do the bed the same way but am 5’8” but might try it as I sleep on my side. I have changed the layout three times already why not lololo. My Van however is dead in my parking lot n is breaking my bank. Oh n I am 3 weeks post op and they hooked me back up and got rid of colostomy. Very happy as was not expecting that. Yah back to normal. Stronger than I thought to make it thru 2 major surgeries in 8 months. My money for my trip is being spent on fixing my Van. So, I am thinking I might just not hit the road till fall. It is all good. Thanks for this video. Always interesting.

Hi Victoria, I believe being happy all the time is an illusion but, sometimes we do come very close to that state of mind, indeed. Today I would define it as being in a peaceful state of mind... maybe the closest thing to happiness. Such a great in depth video that explains all the little tips and tricks of utilizing space and items to be more efficient. I really enjoyed this video and the bed configuration. I'm 5'4 so that gives me another option for my bed. Just bought a Toyota Sienna minivan today, so super excited to just get out and see what works. Thanks so much for taking the time to make a very useful video. I previously had a Chevy Express conversion van. I personally love the minivan because it's easier to maneuver, park, and doesn't stand out as much as my big van did.
@Manyroadsnorules
@Manyroadsnorules 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Roman for your kind comment! You hit the nail on the head: I also considered maneuverability over many other aspects. Even more, I was able to enjoy the stealth capacity of a minivan recently, in San Diego, a very unfriendly city when it comes to van dwellers, my little cocoon was totally unnoticed, super grateful for that!!! Have you tried the bed across? Thank you again, Adriana :)
@romanroseborough1111
@romanroseborough1111 2 жыл бұрын
@@Manyroadsnorules I did try the bed across. It was a tad too cramped. I fit behind the front two seats, but it was a little tighter than I expected. I am still exploring my options. Nothing permanent yet. I'm in the Long Beach area, and it seems to be hit and miss with the community as far as van dwellers. The beach is more forgiving, but unfortunately a ton of dwellers sleep on Ocean Blvd and it can be loud, as well as a good number of mentally challenged individuals flock there as well. My sleep has been challenging to say the least. Still working out the kinks.

Yr video was very inspiring. Every day I am enjoying this new hobby. I have a minivan too and I chose the same black weave drawers! They have matching black weave boxes with tray like lids and they fit perfectly atop those black weave drawer units. I place one of those black boxes with lids on front passenger seat. Handbag chargers makeup etc popped inside to hide. I will try to switch my bed from lengthways behind drivers seat to widthways like you did. Omg that toothpaste into my Porta toilet was GENIUS
@Manyroadsnorules
@Manyroadsnorules 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the drawers idea!!! It would be so much more practical. I will have to try that! Remember that, at the doors, the van is slightly wider than the length of the seats only. I have a tiny gap between the end of the mattress and the door but it doesn't bother at all, perfect for the blanket. Thanks again Virginia!!!

Thank you so much Luke/Jen for your kind words! I find it very interesting that everybody reports feeling "liberated" when they get rid of belongings they don't need. And yet, many people live prisoners of their belongings! I had a coworker who absolutely had to spend $80 a day buying anything. That was the allowance she agreed upon, just $80 because she would spend even more if she had the chance... unfortunately, it is a reality, people need to feel the void with things. Let's wish for future societies that do not have a void at all, right? Thank you again, Adriana :)

Always wondered why van lifers don't do 2nd row seat as the "bed". We r cyclists & will only vanlife to chase bike trails. We love the minivans & require that our bikes stay "indoor" with us. With your setup, we just might be able to! Won't b like sleeping in queen bed but won't b like in a tent either. 1 person at the front (driver & passenger seats, side by side). Another on 2nd row. I think this is quite do-able. Brilliant idea for your van! Question ... where do u get water for shower & dishes? Eager to learn more. Golly! I thought that horse was a cardboard sign for a second! And then he moves! Wow! Majestic! Subscribed!

Hello and thank you for the comment!!! For some people, stretching out is a must, as I said, being 5' 7" I'm very comfortable. But I trained myself to the narrow mattress first, just 24 inches. I recommend, put some books on your bed allowing for only 24" width. Give yourself 65 long for the back bed. Try sleeping in that area and make sure you and your pillow fit. For the front seats, my only concern would be the ridges on the sides of each sit but maybe if you put some towels in the center of the seat, you may end up having a comfortable space for the shortest person. (I would think that the front area will be more restrictive. On the other hand being out there, I sleep better than I used to in a normal house so, hopefully, the deep sleep will compensate for the not being able to move much. Always make your bed as soft as possible so you don't need to toss and turn. Tossing and turning happens when or circulation gets blocked, make it easier for you. And of course you have to have your bikes with you, those are expensive!!! I'm very happy you found a possible solution that may work for you. I think the reason why all minivan dwellers go for the length is just because it seems to be the norm. I was willing to sacrifice inches that I didn't really need for more free space! Thank you again and keep me posted!!! Adriana 😀

Oh! And all supermarkets like Albertson's and SafeWay sell water from machines. You can buy high quality water for 25 cents a gallon. There are also kiosks with water dispensers. Just Google "water refill near me". With my humble bath tub (the plastic tub) I use slightly less than a gallon for a full body wash including hair. First I wash my hair and pour water with a cup to rinse thoroughly, then the areas we need to keep clean and then I soak my feet in the water in the tub. Tap dry, good to go. And I always use unscented baby wipes for the arms, neck, etc. in case I want to be very thorough. Hope it helps!

Another way to "level" your bed would be to have pvc pipes that are a couple inches longer than the legs of your bed platform to put on one side or other and you don't have to have the cushions under your mattress.
@Manyroadsnorules
@Manyroadsnorules 2 жыл бұрын
Well, the whole point about being a minimalist is to carry as little as possible, an extra set of legs would be bouncing around and taking space, also, I don't feel like struggling, the cushions work amazingly well. Thank you for the idea though, it might help others!

Awww Rita, that is so kind of you!!! the idea of repositioning the bed came from the fact that I was not able to access everything from inside of the minivan, and being that I wouldn't like to encounter a bear by going out in the middle of the night, or at least getting wet if it rains, I had to squeeze the little juice left out of my brain. I am happy with the results and hope it helps someone else to find even better solutions! I really love how you have laid out your bed; however, for some reason I can't wrap my brain around how you are accommodating up to 5'7" (67") on a bed which is 60". I read in the comments that you have a few inches of space between the frames which adds two or three inches in length, but how do you not have four or five inches of your body hanging off either the head or the feet? You mentioned touching the walls, but do your legs dangle off the end before being braced by the side wall of the van? Love the curtain rod method you used to separate the front from the back. What a cool experience to see such a beautiful wild horse in such a gorgeous natural setting! Best of luck to you in your travels in 2022 and beyond. You have a new Subscriber here!

Hi Alis in Wanderland! (love your handle name!!!) Since the whole structure is a few inches shorter than the actual space, I have room to tuck in the blankets at the foot of the bed (which holds my feet in place and warm) and, the little gap under my pillow, from the mattress to the door is usually filled by a little decorative pillow that I use for lumbar support when I sit in my chair. That is enough to hold the pillow. I was never good with numbers but I guess the combination of little gaps here and there, magically fit my anatomy LOL Yes!!! that horse was so cute and funny, he was not scared by my vehicle, he must be used to seeing people coming and going, I am back boondocking in that area but haven't seen him yet, I wonder if they migrate far from here with the change of seasons? Sleeping across sounds perfect, but if you are in an SUV it probably won’t work. I have 2012 Honda Pilot, I’m 5’7” and it’s about 5-6” too short. Great idea, though for a minivan!
@Manyroadsnorules
@Manyroadsnorules 2 жыл бұрын
Hi M E P! thank you for your comment! This has been an adventure indeed, it's a tale of defying logic and inches!!! I will make a new video with more precise details because being the laid back person I like to be I realize I have confused many people! Sorry about that. Now, to add to the confusion let me tell you: the minivan has an interior space, from door to door, of 6' 4" 😮 and the shelves a total length of 5 feet 😮 and I made a mistake when I trimmed the mattress and I overdid it 😮 LOL. BUT: the shelves are slightly separated, about 3 inches, which adds to the length, I place a cushion under my pillow so I compensate for the short mattress and I have enough room to tuck in the blankets. Sometimes, if I slide down, I can still stretch to the sides, resting my feet on the van's cup holders or little side shelves, but that doesn't happen often. I suggest you try before taking the final decision, I love being in bed and having a great view from there, it's my Instagram moment. LOL I know it doesn't sound logical but it works beautifully. Thank you so much for the comment and the idea for the video,! Adriana 😀

Awww Pat! thank you for your kind comment!!! I am cutting back on the toothpaste in the toilet so I don't have to go empty the toilet too often, as in everything in life it seems to be kind of important to keep some balance, right? LOL OH how I would love to find a way of meeting other women for shared camping... that would be the dream!!! But with so many options in terms of places to go to and so much mobility we luckily have... it doesn't seem to be easy at all. There is a group in facebook "we camp together" and you can toss your location in there, some people will respond and then you can see if you want to camp close to them. I wish there was an easier way... HOWA was trying to compile a spreadsheet with phone numbers but I think that may be risky and probably a violation of privacy... somemone will come up with a good app for that some day! :)

I just measured my DGC from side to side at the 2nd row seating area. It is only 60” inches. I’m not sure why you said someone 5’7” or shorter. could have their bed in that configuration. Perhaps your van is wider than mine, even though mine is a 2018. Mine does have the center console. I wish it didn’t. I will try it to see if I can be comfortable because I really like that set up.

Hi Hope! This morning I measured the width of the minivan back there by the back door and it is exactly 4 feet wide so, it's either you are okay with sleeping all curled up or you don't put it there at all. As I said, you know yourself, if you are okay with stretching your legs to the side or something like that, maybe it could work? If you so choose, of course you will have an way more spacious living room behind the driver's seat. I suggest this: put a nightstand or something heavy like that on your current bed, leaving just 4 feet for you and your pillow. See if you can sleep comfortably like that. Thank you for your comment, Adriana :)

May I chime in here? As I get my DGC ready as a mini campervan, I’m going to experiment with several layouts. I’m thinking if I want my bed across in the back where it’s 4’ across, I would use 2 shelves side-by-side making the shelves 36” across but 48” front to back. That way I could sleep diagonally (I’m 5’3”) & have the storage at the back hatch under the bed as garage for seldom used items & the front for daily items. One problem now is the shelves are 36” side to side so I would use my chest fridge to make up the last 12” & put some blankets or my winter clothes in the sham on top to bring it level with shelves & the bed would be 48”x48”, lol. There would still be 3’ x 4+’ between the bed & front seats so would have to be creative with that area. Just another consideration if If the fridge doesn’t fit as the foot of the bed, maybe a tote would work there. It might fit 2 smaller totes there- one on top of the other. All the best for your travels, Adriana. Cheers, Mo in NJ

@Manyroadsnorules
@Manyroadsnorules 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lucretia! that is certainly a tall order!!! But I imagine two possible scenarios: two shelf units, side by side to support a full size mattress (not too much room for a big fridge or a toilet but it would be a matter or trimming the mattress as much as possible. OR: adding just one shelf unit in an L shape , both would share a part of the bed, at the feet and crossing fingers, would not kick the other too much! Depending on how tall you two are, it could work. The sweet Beagle will have to have a bed on the front seat, LOL Hope it helps!

Hi Kay, only the back row is stowed in. I had to remove the second row because those were not stowable. If I sell the van I will get some seats out of Ebay and replace them. What is that thing about selling stickers? I have no idea! :)

Oh our minivan are exactly the same then, Town and Country and Grand Caravan use the same exact body. I just got a cheap metal sliding rod, the ends come rounded so I hammered them to make them flat and then I pushed them into the groove where the ceiling and the column between the doors meet. Really easy. I think this one is too long: (just as an example) www.amazon.com/Graber-Curtain-120-Inch-Adjustable-Projection/dp/B007ULEVWU/ref=sr_1_38?crid=2DZODKYT0MBT8&keywords=metal+white+sliding+curtain+rod&qid=1643500013&sprefix=metal+white+sliding+curtain+rod%2Caps%2C121&sr=8-38

@@Manyroadsnorules Hey Many Roads I went camping in my 2015 Chrysler T&C for 4 days high falls state park. I used your bed set up, it worked out well. I had the plywood cut to 29 wide and length 4'10". Where I could lean against the front seats. I used stretch rods for the curtains. I have pictures but I'm not sure how to post them. When I figure it out I'll post them. But wanted to thank you your post.

oh! I didn't tell you that I have some like milk crates that fold down, that is where I store my stuff and that makes the platform for my plywood and foam mattress. I still need to adjust the bed I want to fit so I can space close to the front so I can have room to move my feet to be able to get in the front seat. I'm working on it but I had a good time in High Falls State park last week end. I didn't have installation on my window and it verrrry cold. I had electric heaters and still felt like I had the windows open. Someone said weather tech has window covers for our van, I looked but didn't see any. I now know, that I really do need them. I made some window coverings out of that gray carpet from home depot, it keeps the light but it don't do anything for the cold. I tried making window covers with that silver installation from Home Depot I didn't do a good job, so I didn't take them with me this time, but I'll bet you a penny, I'll have something with installation the next time I go camping. The low was in the 30s for 3 nights. But I stayed for 4 nights. I just needed to go camping. Cold or no cold. I'm going to try to post some pictures. Thanks again

I'm not a tall man, 5ft 9in, but I don't see how I could sleep sideways in a minivan. I would need a little more legroom, can't sleep curled up in a fetal position all the time.

I have to agree with you here Joe, I am 5ft 7in and it is really tight but, if you manage to not have too many things in your minivan, you should be comfortable with a bed positioned lengthwise, that is how I started. I used the same shelves but both of them in the same position: 24 in all the way for the width. I just had to trim the legs at different heights because the back of the van is a little higher than the front. It worked really well, this is a video I made of it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bp7Gn4l6ms5_bKs Hope it helps! Thank you Joe!!! :)

Hi Sherri, I'm sorry it seems I didn't expand enough on this point: yes, it is the same shelves, I cut the legs a little shorter to give me more head room. And I put the shelves in an L shape. Now there is 36" plus 24" in the length, from the right door to the left door of the van, and the mattress width continues to be about 26" There is a little free area that doubles up as a side table if you will, that is where I place my water tank now. Please remember the shelves are 36 long x 24 wide. And now they make an L With this explanation, check the photos in the video again for more clarity. Please feel free to ask any other question you may have. 😀

Thank you so much for your kind comment! I did make some changes, video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/on-laZmGjs92Z5osi=fILM8dScSHKgTjfq And, I don't have a cargo box, they are expensive and it's not very stealth at all. As a minimalist, I have plenty of room in the new dresses and under the shelves. I am considering, maybe, switching to a bigger vehicle to be able to have a small recliner or a rotating captain chair so I can sit and not be in bed all day if the weather is not nice. I'll make a video about that, of course. Thank you again for being here!!! 😊🤗

Oh, and I put a solar panel on the roof to feed the jackery but I will probably have a battery system and more panels soon. Still deciding. The 100 w panel and the 500 jackery work well for charging the little fridge and my phone. For now.

I’m confused about the bed. Are you using two shelves, both 36x24., side by side making a square, OR head to head making an L? I heard you say one needs to be under 5’7”, but that would be 67 inches, more than the 60 “ going head to head (L), and 72” if shelves are end to end, but you can’t have 6 ft. from left door to right door? I watched this and the tour you gave on Travel snacks and am still confused as to individual measurements of shelf and how many did you use? Thank you for taking time to answer.
@Manyroadsnorules
@Manyroadsnorules 2 жыл бұрын
HI Teacher! sorry if it was not clear, I will try to make that video again with more details. But for now, I will try to explain it like this: one shelf unit is 36 long by 24 wide, I put it across behind the passenger seat with the length running parallel to that front seat. The other shelf unit I placed it in the conventional position most people use to make their beds in a minivan, parallel to the doors, and that makes an L shape with the other one. Both units do not actually touch, there is a gap of about 3 inches between them. Originally you would get 60" in total (36 plus 24) and now you have that little gap that takes it to 63... the rest will be the mattress overhanging on each side, about 2 inches on each end. The length of the mattress should be determined by the interior width of your minivan at the site of the doors. I guess it might vary depending on the brand of the minivan but I don't think it is too much anyway. I think if I had cut the legs of the shelves to have the top of the mattress at the height of the glass, the windows, I could have squeezed maybe 4 or 5 more inches but I would rather have more head room to the ceiling so I can sit comfortably without touching the ceiling. As you see, it is a matter of playing with the fractions, taking one inch from here and one inch from there... Let me know if you still have questions. Thank you for your comment, Adriana :)

Hello, wonderful! I just purchased a grand caravan. What type of shelves are you using for bed, also what mattress?
@Manyroadsnorules
@Manyroadsnorules 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Phyllis! thank you so much for your kind comment, this is a video where I explain the bed with more detail: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bp7Gn4l6ms5_bKs The shelves I bought at a hardware store, any Home depot or similar stores will have them. Just plastic garage storage 36 by 24 inches. I think they come in a 5 shelf unit, you will have to trim the legs (easily done with a handsaw) to the height you need: so much for storage underneath according to the boxes or bags you will put down there, and, so much for your head space, I have a 9 inch mattress so I had to bring the legs short enough to make sure I would get a nice balance between storage and head room. If you place the shelves on the long side, from front seat to back hatch, you will have 2 units of 36 inches long each but 2 different heights because the back space is a little lower. If you place the shelves as I did with the new layout, the space between the side doors is more generous and allows for a few more inches. As for the mattress, I have two layers of 3" memory foam plus a 3" tempurpedic topper which makes me be grateful every time I get in bed. If you choose to do something like that, I strongly recommend a waterproof mattress protector because our sweat destroys memory foam, it will protect your investment for years. Please let me know if you need more details! Thank you again, Adriana :)

I’m a Toyota fan (Highlander and now 4-Runner) but am planning to take a leap of faith and buy a Dodge Grand Caravan because of the Stow and Go seats (I now have to be able to take 2 passengers quite frequently and the doggies’ bed is up front. Also the floor seems to be a lot flatter than Sienna or Odyssey. I WAS 5’ but my doctor says I’ve shrunk 2”! 😱. Now I can see the advantage. I bought (but haven’t used) an “inflatable back seat mattress” from Amazon. I got the one with the removable “legs.” That way you can just use cooler/fridge/bins to support the end of the mattress. You will need a rolled towel or similar to raise the sip at the back of the seat. Only works with 2nd row bench seat. $40+. Good for SUVs
