Hello from Oklahoma! If one of these vehicles would've had chains or traction matts, and some one that knew what they were doing, this would've been easy. Thank God for the guy in the dodge.

Safety tip for next time: Don't EVER EVER attach a chain or recovery rope/strap to a tow ball. They're not meant for that kind of stress and can become a projectile when they break. Instead, hook up to the safety chain loops on the trailer hitch or anywhere on a vehicle's frame keeping in mind not to pinch parts or run the strap along edges that could cut it. Also good to use a weight like a heavy coat or another strap over the middle of the recovery rope/strap/cable in case it does break or come loose. The weight will absorb recoil so it doesn't come crashing through your windshield or smack someone in the head. Dangerous tensions at work - safety first!

Please don't use the safety chain hooks for recovery. They are not made for that. A short chain or strap around the hitch is a much better plan. A ball even a small one will take vehicle recovery all day but you have to apply some common sense, most importantly the ball can't be shorter than attachment point on the other vehicle or it absolutely can slip off of the ball. I don't recommend chains for recovery because if they break or come loose they can really snap back, you can limit this some by hanging a coat in the middle if the chain to help weigh it down if it snaps. I always use straps between the two vehicles.

So if the towing ball/hitch is not meant for that kind of stress just imagine the stress its under with a trailer on it

@@veteranheavyequipmechanic4990 i saw another video on KZbin of the aftermath of when somebody used a tow ball to try to free a truck that was stuck in the mud, and the tow ball somehow came loose and ricochetted off of the steering wheel into the driver's head in the stuck truck. Obv he was dead. How would you avoid that if you are using a tow ball? Are there different stresses pulling a car out of snow vs mud?

1). Using the Hitch Ball 2). Using standard rope for recovery 3). No tire chains 4). Minivan needed to keep tires straight during the recovery until free 5). Chain? Hooked to the hitch ball?? Good grief. 6). Not one dampener or safety precaution taken. Normally easier to pull someone out the way they went in. Always use rated recovery points with rated recovery gear. Always keep people not involved in the recovery out of the danger zone. That includes inside the vehicles. If pulling someone out, going in a forward drive gear is always more forgiving for your rack and pinion than trying to recover in reverse. Whether it snows once a decade or once a week, ALWAYS keep tire traction devices on your vehicle if you don't want dedicated winter tires in snowy conditions. Don't venture onto a public road and endanger everyone's life and property by being unprepared. Thanks Ed for the share, we've all witnessed stuff that makes us cringe. Good life lesson.

If your in this situation, lower your tire pressure to where your tires look flat. If you don’t have a portable compressor, don’t go as low as 5-8 psi. But have the tires bulge more than a little when you lower the tire pressure. You will see difference immediately and have way more traction. The van doesn’t have much tire for it to be really affective but it would help for sure. The key to driving in snow is slow turning tires, never spin your tires excessively. Fast spinning tires dig, will only work against you.

Not sure if the first attempt using the tow ball as an attachment point for the snatch strap is recommended. I have read lot of stories and heard from fellow 4WDers about tow balls failing and becoming high speed projectiles if used this way.

Well, I discourage tow ball used myself, but while I've seen plenty of carnage in person, on film, and in pictures, not one that I've seen included a picture of a broken tow ball. I think all tow points should be scrutinized. The Jeep wrapping that rope around the bumper is a bad idea too. Most bumpers, especially modern ones with the crash design crap, are not very strong.

Guy yanking on right side minivan door isn’t doing anything but putting himself in harms way if the minivan moved right. You don’t pull a vehicle ...you push. They need to pull the van at a 45 degree angle, so that they pull him to the RIGHT with as much force as they are pulling him forward. Only then will that minivan get his left tires out of that ditch on the left side of the road. Any fool can see that, so why cannot those guys see that? I have 2 sets of traction aids in my car (like this: cdnll.discountramps.com/images/xl/steel-recovery-track.jpg ) and I've used those to get my front-drive car out of worse spots than that van is in, without any help from anyone else.

appx 25 ft of 3/8 rope on each tire, woven through the rims and around the tread acts as emergency chains and can get you going up to 25 mph on snow. Not very many here in the north east of PA. use them either. I have extra rims with snow tires for my Tacoma , and never had a problem untill this last winter storm of 29 inches.....I did have trouble plowing my driveway , but did complete the job after much wheel spin.....chains would of been better in this very deep snow.

Edward Howard Ever been to Gatlinburg? There is A mountain there that says, "No vehicles without chains beyond this point.." It may also read snow tires, not sure. I thought that was interesting
