Loved getting to watch my brother play! We live 12 hours apart, so while I get to see his models once he's painted them I've never actually seen them in action. This was fun to watch!

Rule 1.5 faction terrain: does not stop units from moving or charging away. Units CAN charge and end within .5 of an inch. Nowhere does it say it counts as a unit during the charge phase.

Hi! I'm the StD player in the video. Hope you enjoyed the battle! Looking at the charge phase rules, you must choose a unit that "is not in combat," and the Combat Range rules state that a unit is in combat "if any enemy models [not units] is within" combat range. Faction terrain models are enemy models, thus Archaon was "in combat" with the summoned trees - whether or not they are units. It's a badly written interaction, to be sure, but - as currently written - you cannot pick a unit to charge if it is "in combat," which does not require an enemy unit. (Bizarre, but true!)

@@TorJakobsenagain, "units" is not the key word we're looking for. It's "model." The issue is whether the unit that wants to charge is already in combat; a unit is in combat if it is within 3" of an enemy *model.* Check rule 7.0: Combat Range.

I hear what you're saying - thats from the FAQ. But the definition of "in combat" only requires your unit to be within 3' of an enemy MODEL. If the rule said "Within 3' of a model in an enemy unit" it would change this, but read as written a unit is in combat based on proximity to models - not units.

Great battle report, love to see chaos on the board. One thing to note when using the chosen or Varanguard ability to fight twice, you have to declare this before fighting and cannot pick after the unit has fought. Something that I was told at a tournament and want to pass on 😅

Thanks for noting this! I "discovered" it about a week after this game, definitely makes the ability less steam-rolly (although you almost always want to use it at first opportunity anyway).

Archaon is undivided so he has +1 to wound against the treelord

Yes he does! But the treelord has an ability that gives him -1 to wound rolls, and the base to wound for SoK is 3+. Once both effects apply, he's back to 3+.

100%. Or if she came back when she had the chance. I got super lucky with the SoK and @skared got super unlucky with the rebirth roll, those both shaped the outcome quite strongly.

You can start the game with her surrounded by 3 which would serve as a return point for her strike and fade allowing you to heal off endless growth end of turn and lifebloom in the hero phase. She can be very hard to kill if used properly.

It's def a badly written interaction. I'm pretty confident that we did it right, though - a unit in combat cannot charge, and a unit is in combat if it is within 3" of an enemy model (not unit). I expect a faq on this soon tbh.

@@michaelberg1207 almost correct, but you forgot something important. They are only in combat in the *combat* phase. So no, you did not do it correctly. The only reason you can charge them is because of an addendum that says you can end within .5" of them when charging, like a unit, they don't count as a unit for any other purpose in the charge phase, really. Except for hitting them with things like impact mortals. Terrain and static manifestations only count for combat ranges in the combat phase, charge phase is not combat phase, to answer in short fashion. This was one of the *first* things FAQ'd because of how busted summoning things like shackles to prevent charges was.

@@KodyackCasual Actually, no: charge phase still says you have to pick a friendly unit that "is not in combat." The definition of in combat does not mention "units." See 7.0 combat range: "If any enemy models (NOT units) are within a unit's combat range and visible to it, that unit is in combat." So the definition of "in combat" for purposes of charge eligibility is ONLY whether you are within 3" of an enemy model. The FAQ changed it so that faction terrain counts as a unit during the combat phase, but that's irrelevant here. They need to change combat range to "if any models in an event unit" rather than "if any enemy models." That fixes it for charge phase purposes. Lmk if there's something I'm missing in the rules, please, I want to get this right (and very much want them to fix this, as it is dumb).
