Minnesota Fats vs Willie Mosconi (Howie Cosell Ringside)-Pool Sharks
Minnesota Fats was one of the most heralded, and popular ambassadors that the sport of Billiards Pool had ever seen. His Opponent, Willie Mosconi, is the incomparable, undisputed greatest straight shooter, tournament style player that ever racked and wacked, having won 16 consecutive World Titles. Adding to the rivalry was the fact that these two did not like each other at all. Mosconi feels like Fatso is a disgrace to his gentleman's game, billiards. While Fats The Hustler despises the fact that chumps like Mosconi play for peanuts, Minnesota is busy, "leaving wit da Caaaaash! Ya Understand?"
The Real contention aside from the competition is due to the fact that Minnesota Fats claimed that the movie "The Hustler" had based Jackie Gleesons Character "Minnesota Fats" off of his legend. Which seemed pretty obvious seeing how the real Fats was incredibly popular by the time the film came out. Plus the fact that the author of the Book said that he liked to watched the real Fats play in Little Egypt.
Maybe it was different back then but today there's not a lot of guys going by the moniker "Fats, Fatso, or even Fatboy" Seems like a fairly original name.
Willie, was a consultant on the film and the stunt double who hit some of those rather impossible trick shots from the wrist down.
He contends that Fats is full of shit and that he stole the moniker after the film hit the big screen. Fats admits that his original nickname was New York Fats, but he had a huge reputation around the country and had garnered the nickname all over the country. Chicago Fats, St.Louis Fats, Havannah Fats. But Mosconi maintained the opinion that fats was just liar.
As an extra and sizeable bonus, aside from the amazing and rare pool match between the legends. The Legend of Broadcasting, Howie Cosell, graces the airwaves adding some much needed neutrality and class to the special. So watch the video and listen close to Fats, a true hustler, and an even better entertainer. Oh yeah and Willie's their too... Minnesota Fats vs Willie Mosconi Classic- on Sports Vids !! I was given the opportunity to play Minnesota Fats, Feb. 27, 1993. He never shuts up, made me nervous, but I was still 2 balls ahead. Took my shot at the 8 ball, and it hung at the left corner pocket, and wouldn't drop in. So I lost. But it was still a privilege to have played him. Rich

I saw Mosconi play the University Of Florida student champ in the summer of '68 at UFL. Straight pool to 150, the student made a few balls and missed, Mosconi ran 150.

@@rickywaddell49 Yes, I'm well aware of their comparative abilities. I lived and breathed billiards for decades and played APA league when I was younger, leveled and recovered tables and repaired cues. I really miss it but health problems from Agent Orange exposure finally caught up with me.

@@ronzoni10001 In 14.1 maybe. Efren Reyes is so knowledgeable about so many different variations of the game, and techniques like kicks, that he'd probably have the advantage, if both were matched up in their prime. (IMO.)

I remember watching this on tv..I was maybe around 14. Fats was a legend and a hustler, but he also never shut the F up lol. Always sharing his opponent. Mosconi was a class act all the way. You could tell Fats was from the streets. In this day and age they’d never put up with crap like this, but for the time, it was all about entertainment.

Rudolph Wanderone was a liar, a poseur, and a mediocre pool player. He wasn't qualified to carry Moscone's cue case, let alone play him. Also, he was not Minnesota Fats OR the player Walter Tevis, the novelist, based his character on.

Seems a bit harsh to lose the game, set, AND match just because he couldn't get to the 8 ball due to Willie's balls being in the way. I'd rather see Willie just get ball in hand. That's the way at least SOME leagues are doing it now.
