Democrats threatened to not show up tomorrow so that there will not be a quorum. Currently the republicans have the majority because a democrat did not reside in the district he was running in and lied on his affidavit of candidacy. A hearing was held and a judge ruled he was disqualified. There is also speculation that Johnson may have committed voter fraud by voting at a location where he claimed he previously lived. It’s complicated. The majority, republicans are now allowed to elect a speaker and from there they will assign chairs to each of the committees. There is a lawsuit against Walz for calling a special election for the position ( because the democrat lied ) which was not timely. The democrats don’t want to show up until the special election results are certified which could be sometime in February. There are more dynamics going within the senate as well with a current member facing a burglary trial for allegedly breaking into her stepmothers house clothed in all black, entering the stepmothers bedroom in the wee hours of the morning and found in the basement by law enforcement. Also, there is the matter of the missing 20 ballots that were “tossed out” in Scott county where the election results are now uncertifiable for the democrat who is claimed to have won by 14 votes. At the end of the day the republicans have achieved a majority in the house as it opens on the 14th. The democrats don’t want to concede power and a playing dirty tricks not to work for the people that elected them.

Per an interview on MPR today the discussion was eye-opening. As a Democrat, I was a bit alarmed with the no quorum plan and, indeed, felt th y should return to work. HOWEVER, the discussion opened my eyes. This is not a rare occurrence in this country. Other legislators have done this numerous times elsewhere. Plus, the 2 wks the Republicans would control would be disastrous as they don't intend to do anything but take as much power back as possible. That is not shared control of power at all.
