It's kind of rare to find Minolta VHS camcorders and VCRs, like VCRs from Pioneer and Technics. Of course, some of these companies didn't make their own VCRs (obviously, Technics is Matsushita, so their VCRs are technically made by them), but it's still cool to find machines from these brands.

I'm another who won't buy Apple anything. I hate being locked into a world of incompatible hardware/software and they deliberately make it difficult to make backups or upgrade basics like RAM or storage. Also overpriced and expensive repairs, I always stick with companies who properly support their hardware. I recently bought A 10 year old server off Ebay to tinker with using 4 xeon cpu's and setting up a 128GB ram disk system for video editing. Just to see what sort of performance I would get before investing serious money in a more up to date system. I ran into a few problems and emailed HP and not expecting a reply. Instead I got 45 mins speaking to an engineer and emailed drivers and manuals which got everything working the same day. HP made no money that day, but will next year as I know they value what could be a future customer.

I found that one of those while curbside Scrapping. Exact same model. Carry case and all. Just missing the battery. It does have the AV cord. I’m thinking of doing a resale👍🏻👍🏻. (I even did a YT short about the find). Really cool piece ! Thx. ! Steve.

Well, I recognize the button layout- My gran had the Sear LXI camera- also made by Hitachi - although it did not have quite as many features, was not good without floodlamps during indoor shooting - and was unreliable. When it did work, however- the picture was the best that VHS could offer.

I remember working on salvaged Hitachi VCRs back in the early 1990s, and those modules were always something I found odd. No one else used them, and I have to wonder why Hitachi would have used such a fragile component on a camcorder. They *did* seem to work fine on a normal VCR, but then normal VCRs weren't moved much.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 4 жыл бұрын
I think those modules were a way to try to reduce costs like STK power modules as opposed to adding a bunch of discrete components. Anyway not very reliable especially in a camcorder. They were in portable VCRs and they were damaged all the time.

I unearthed my fathers old Minolta master series- v 16 He took good care of it. Upon powering up it quickly shut down and then would not turn back on following a smell. I assume it blew a fuse. Any idea where I can score a replacement? *update* upon further inspection I realized the fuse is two "welded" transistor looking pieces, not the fuse i was expecting. would love to get this thing running

Yes it was a waste of time repair wise, but i really enjoy your teardowns or repairs dave :-D I do like the old beasts, even though they are not as good as modern stuff. For example some of your reel to reel recorders are old as the hills but i love the engineering, quality decks :-D I would have put the deck on a shelf, so the head could stay safely mounted untill needed, but that's me.
@12voltvids

I have several reel to reel decks just on display because they look cool. I don't use them unless I need to play a tape. The really ancient units are stored in a heated loft. I really should sell some of these old beasts.

Same here, I will never buy anything Apple but so many people do including some family members and they keep on buying them. 🤷‍♀️ Sony were another company guilty of doing this in the past (e.g. memory stick and proprietary power connectors) .

I have an old touch also. Found the old version of software and can use it. It is over 15 years old I think and still charges and works. Working on a Minolta won't eject. Eject motor runs but will not open. Watching video to see how to open it. I just used 12 power supply on the battery tabs to power it. Thinking ejector motor belt. Not really worth the time. Plus have no VHS tapes. Think will save for rain day project.

For sure it's good for nothing when you give up on it. Usually you persevere and fix most things in the end, so this was surely a lost cause. I was thinking apple even before you mentioned it. I got one of those earlier ipod touches given to me too. Lucky I put a lot of the best music from back in the day on it, and let windows media player pilf all the Itunes music files, so I don't have to depend on their crap.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 4 жыл бұрын
I wrote it off as I am positive that the fault is in the glass composite ic. I have seen so many of them fail. When they were available i changed hundreds of them. There is no point going further when everything points to an obsolete part. If i could have gotten a picture off the camera and got it to record that would have been ok even without the cable because the tape could just go in a VCR but with no video from the camera block lots of lines ect when that camera block is tapped this all points to the camera block and that black glass module. They are made of ceramic glass and are very prone to cracking from physical stress. They used to pot these modules in orange or black plastic enclosures and fill them with rubber compound to protect them from shock but i guess that cost too much.
