Minoru Suzuki was super-technical on the ground at this time. A lot of people dont realize he was used for motion-capture for some of the grappling moves in the early Tekken arcade and Playstation games! Matt Hume has always been calm and collected and hard to deal with-- he rarely if ever lost is these events and in MMA.

Matt Hume's record is horrible in Pancrase. It's at 2 wins and 5 losses. Admittingly, Ken Shamrock, Minoru Suzuki, Manabu Yamada and Jason Delucia (4 of his 5 losses) were top contenders in Pancrase. Scott Bessac, 1 of his only 2 wins in Pancrase, was a Lions Den fighter, but Matt has a mixed record of 5 wins and 5 losses. And his victories against Erik Paulson (who Erik was outgrappling) and Pat Militech were more from accidental injury in the fights rather than amazing fighting ability by Matt. It would be more fair to say that in submission grappling, Matt Hume was exception. Being trained in Greek Pankration (and with a background in Judo, Boxing and a strong freestyle wrestling history), Matt was superb in submission grappling and largely considered an excellent grappling coach. Matt Hume also largely influenced the legalization of Mixed Martial Arts in America as well as being a large influence in Pride FC. So politically speaking, he was amazingly impressive and a strong and necessary aid for MMA. As a competitor, he was unimpressive and Matt's claims that all his losses were 'fixed fights' only his 2 wins were real fights (In contract to his claims in the first PrideFC where he stated he was in MMA before it was called MMA, in Pancrase and had many fights on recorded television) have angered and upset many people that trained and competed with him in Pancrase. So...he's not exactly WELCOMED by the Pancrase community but he is definitely respected by MMA all over and remains a legend in the world of submission wrestling.

Before Eddie Bravo stole and renamed the move, it was known as a guillotine. It’s a common wrestling finisher. What you call a guillotine in BJJ was known as a front head lock. Eddie Bravo was a high school wrestler. Much of his BJJ system comes from his wrestling background.

Joel Ellsworth Agreed. I feel like they should do amateur mma with this ruleset. Many great fighters developed this way. The rope escapes allow you to make mistakes and survive, and the palm strikes lower your chances of taking too many hard knockouts. It's great prep for full on mma.

@@stasios6034 the rope break is terrible. You could have someone in a finishing hold, then they rope break, just to stand back up and head kick and knock you out.

So whats the deal with the open palms? is it rules or =because bare knuckled punches and injuries
@actionCHEESE1
@actionCHEESE1 8 жыл бұрын
I think it was because of the rules. Pancrase didn't allow closed fist punches. Great example is Bas Rutten! His fights were fantastic and he put a lot of power in his open hand strikes
@AirLancer
@AirLancer 6 жыл бұрын
Pancrase was literally "hey what if we did pro wrestling but for real?" No closed-fist strikes to the face in pro wrestling, so in Pancrase you can only punch to the body, palm strikes to the face.
@ShinobiNeon
@ShinobiNeon Жыл бұрын
Only open palms were allowed to the head/face. Closed fists are allowed to the body and anywhere else except the groin. Great example of that is Bas Rutten, who destroyed Jason Delucia's liver with closed fist punches to the body.

How many of these guys juiced? You got Nate Marqart, Josh Barrnet, Thiago Silva and Ken Shamrock. Three of the four have tested positive and Ken has admitted too use. All have won the championship. It seems like all the other fighters besides boss a Hume were ripped too. Testing must have been setup.
