Both Matt Hume and Erik Paulson learned Catch wrestling in Japan at time when Japanese MMA scene was light years ahead of North America. The Japanese trained Catch wrestlers who crossed over to America all became champions fairly easily: Frank Shamrock, Bas Rutten, Matt Hume, Erik Paulson, Josh Barnett, Kazushi Sakuraba, etc. Just to name a few early pioneers. These guys dominated their often much larger opponents at North American MMA scenes in 1990s and early 2000s.

I've trained under John Danaher, and also trained for ~5 years under Matt. Matt is easily to MMA knowledge and coaching what John is to BJJ, the only thing thats different is the public's perception or awareness of this. Also, even in his 50s his skills are still insanely sharp, to the point where those are still the scariest rolls i've ever had with anybody (and i've rolled with several HOFers), i'm not sure more than 10 seconds ever passed without me tapping, despite an almost 20 year age gap.

Lived in same area as AMC gym in early 90's and we all knew Matt's name and reputation. Maurice Smith trained there too back when the Kickboxing world wanted nothing to do with him . A few friends trained there and they said just holding pads for Moe was painful. Lots off quality came from that gym

holding pads for moe is brutal.. felt like someone hitting you w a baseball bat. it was truly amazing how it would rattle your brain when he did body kicks. thud thud thud felt like my arm was breaking through the kick sheild.. fun one was bob sapp.. he didn't have that thud kick.. it was more like a battering ram. first kick from bob took me straight off my feet. rich Franklin couldn't take me off my feet. he barely made my front leg move. bobs hip flexibility wasn't great so his mid kick was awkward but just the weight of his leg would shove me back 10 feet

Maurice also had his own school in Bellevue. Maurice Smith's Kickboxing and submission center (1998) before he landed at AMC. I went to Maurices school with Roman Roitberg before he went to AMC. Later I went to Ballard Juijitsu Firehouse under Mamazinho 'Ralph Gracie School' before he went back to Brazil. I was at Ivan Salverries school at Lake Union for a bit around 2006. Trained with a fair amount of AMC guys at Ivans. Great work ethic. Matt Hume is a legend. Maurice too. Cheers

@@jodydolphin79 Thanks for the reply. I did about 4 schools myself including Reese Andies before he moved from Renton to Auburn. Yes Moe's kicks are hard. Even just holding the Thai pad for him and demonstrating a round house, I could tell he had a lot of power. This was 98 or so right after he beat Mark Coleman. Kasushi Sakaraba ' the Gracie Hunter' would come in his gym for a time to do cardio and roll at Maurice Smith's Kickboxing. He had another shorter trainer there with a mullet whom helped run the gym. Good guy. Got to take wrestling from some Lions den coaches there. Good memories.

I was at AMC (American Martial Arts Center) for 18 years under Matt from 2003-21. Before that I was at Team Quest from 2002-03 thanks to Robert Follis letting me train for free for my senior high school project. Love these talks about the old days. So many good stories from these wild west days of mma. You forgot to tell us if your dad won that 5k bet 🤣 Not sure if you've told about the SBG gym in Portland and how the old Team Quest guys trained there too but I'm sure there's great stuff there. Especially since Conor ended up being a SBG fighter from Ireland when that gym started in Portland. Miss when you were a politician and promoted Sportfight events.

I trained at The Wizard's gym back in the mid-90s. He & Haru Shimanishi were the coaches back then. Those guys were great people. I must have just missed an opportunity to train with you, Chael. I had to leave the gym around that same time that Barnett came in to the gym... after him fighting against Sun Bear at a Pankration event in Montana. We were shocked that Sun Bear lost.

@Sub if you are against antifa and BLM Chris (Sun Bear) was one of the top guys at the gym, AMC (American Martial Arts Center) at that time. He helped coach and showed technique etc. Had many fights under his belt. He had the fight lined up along with a couple other guys from the team in Montana, so alot of us got to be involved in his prep for the fight. We felt pretty confident since he knew his opponent was gonna be some young, college wrestler with a 0-0 record. When Chris returned home with a loss, his opponent was remembered. When we learned that kid was coming to train at AMC... then we knew his name. LOL

I've met Matt Hume on a couple of occasions about 10 years ago very nice guy he actually introduced himself to me I used to be a rather large size bodybuilder at least in my humble opinion and here he was training Josh Barnett in a gym in Auburn Washington called vision quest that was secondary to AMC and that time Dimitri was not training with him but Josh Barnett also had a few guys from Japan there training with him

@@Cucumberdrx yes I'd be in there lifting weights sometimes when the wrestling was going on and I got to say some of those kids were absolutely amazing I wrestled as a youth and I wouldn't have lasted more than a minute with any of them I know he had three four or five state champions there kids were incredible maybe your kid was one of them?

We actually drove 300mi just to get a chance to work out with some of those kids and feed off of some of their coaching/technique. We were from Republic, a tiny town in NE WA.

So Matt Hume came out of Pancrase, Erik Paulson was Shooto champion. Both fight promotions in Japan essentially Shoot or Legit pro wrestling promotions. Tiger Mask started Shooto, Billy Robinson started Pancrase. I wrote a book 📖 Rough and Tumble with Erik Paulson about this history back in 2008. Mitsuyo Maeda who trained the Gracies was a competitive catch wrestler and judoka. The Gracie family ran the Carnivals in Brazil 🇧🇷 where the catch wrestlers bet fans they couldn't last a few minutes in the wrestling tents. History is Very fascinating read our book 📖

Erik is one of the greatest martial artists and instructors of all time - one of the pioneers of MMA - amazing amount of knowledge and never holds anything back. That's awesome that your father used to tell you those stories my father did not my father was in the Korean war stationed in Tokyo as an MP only went to the front lines one time that he told us about and he did not like it at all and he only ever told us one story about people acting up in a no-go zone in Tokyo other than that he did not talk about it I wish you would have he's been dead now for over 30 years and I will never be able to learn those stories

I remember ordering stuff from magazines; and those dang VHS 📼!!!! 😂 A few years back, Josh was on Rogan's show, and he shared a story about CONTINUING to live in downtown LA. even though he could afford otherwise. When Joe asked him WHY? Josh calmly stated: "We'll, sometimes you walk outside and meet a nice person; sometimes you meet a homeless person; and sometimes you meet someone who tries to stab you. It keeps it interesting." LOL!!!! That's when I knew Josh is cut from a different fabric than most of us! He's a legitimate GLADIATOR!!!!

Matt was my wrestling coach at Kirkland junior high in the eighth grade and once the season ended I trained with him in wrestling and mma with him year round from then until the end of high school. I was one of his very first students, and my mom even lent him money to pay for him to purchase wrestling mats for us! Every moment I spent with him I either grew as an athlete or grew as a person. Although Matt is as humble a person as I have ever met, in my humble opinion, at his prime he was an unstoppable force. I’ve seen him sparring with Maurice Smith, who was at the time (in WKA, I think. Which was the most fearsome American kickboxing association at the time because the only one that allowed leg kicks) the heavyweight kickboxing championship of the world, and Matt would do wizard shit on Maurice. Maurice could barely land a punch. And there’s a video of Matt fighting Ken Shamrock and yeah Matt loses but Ken has like 40 or more pounds of muscle on him and Matt looks like the least worried person ever to get in a ring… Anywho, my for my entire adult life my definition of frustration is “how I feel when somebody starts mansplaining something mma related to me!

i'm the only guy with the tape. love that. and you said 97. i graduated in 92 from high school. my Dad was into boxing. my great granpa fought sugar ray robinson in amateur. but i remeber ufc at my dads house in 93. we had an illegal cable bs thing. i never missed another one. my dad never took to mma. he would watch it but never loved it. he always hated he had to judge mma fights. mississippi boxing commission was bad ass early 90s. tuesday night fights. he said sean o'grady was a terrible tipper. tipped one freaking quarter. anyway. just heard you mention you pops and mine passed away in 2020. he got me into boxing and i got him almost into mma. i miss him. and i miss he didn't see fury beat wilder. he called tyson/ douglas. he thought wilder would be the best if he was under control. he went rouge the last round of their first fight to win it. and rouge won his fights again twice. peace bro. just mentioning your dad brought up mine.

Funny story: Early 90s, I’m a grocery clerk in Kirkland Washington. Matt’s gym was down the street and he and his then wife were regular shoppers. Always friendly and polite. One day he shows up at the store with a small mouse under his eye and I asked how he got it: “I just got back from a type of martial arts tournament in Japan, and got it there.” Me: “Cool, I’m a purple belt in Shotokan and have done a few point tournaments myself! But never got so unlucky (lol) as actually getting hit in the face.” I had absolutely ZERO idea about MMA, nor the total badass Matt was. He smiled and said “That’s cool! Maybe come by and train at our gym sometime.” Matt’s a class act. I did go train a bit and was soundly, and gently, choked out, submitted, and generally dominated over and over again.

Have been a huge fan since your collegiate days, prior to my own. I love the interview with Gable in ‘18, and when reach back to guys like Les Gutches, Ed Banach, the Brand brothers (etc.)! I was a huge professional wrestling fan as a kid, (actually went to my first folk style practice at 4 with a ski mask tucked away until the old man found out 😂)! I think it would make a really fun watch to see you go back and forth with a guy like Brett Hart who evolved from ‘getting stretched’ by his father Stu Hart, a great catch wrestler in his own right!
