Betty Grable: THE most underrated film star from Hollywood's Golden Age.

This number is a perfect example of the 40s Fox musical. By 1945 the Fox music department was geared to the perfect presentation of Betty Grable. In the first few years of her tenure at Fox the studio executives learned that Grable in color was a sure win with movie audiences. Dancing was her strength and the studio gave her the songs of Harry Warren and Mack Gordon to showcase her abilities. While her voice was thin, her personality was the key element of her performance and it served her well.

Thanks Tugg for that info. Thanks for posting. It adds to our interest in this clip and in Betty herself.

At 3:52 the guy on the left is my old friend Ted Jordan. He later worked on the Television show "Gun Smoke" as freight agent Nathan Burke.

This number, by the roses-and-peaches complexioned Betty Grable, is the best in this gorgeous musical. The other great numbers that will live through eternity are: The more I see you, You'll never know and I wish I knew, rendered by both Dick Haymes and our Grable gal. My top fave Grable movie is When my baby smiles at me, with Diamond Horseshoe rating second and in 3rd place, the delightful Meet me after the show. I'm anxious to see Betty's 1954 release 'The Farmer Takes a wife", which I have never seen.

Carol Burnett sang the first few lines whilst playing young Eunice as she was courting her husband to be in the episode she eloped. Was always curious about it and here it is

I REALLY ADMIRE BETTY GRABLE....YOU CAN SEE HER IN THE 1930 EDDIE CANTOR FILM "WHOOPEE" IN THE COWBOY NUMBER..(IN TWO STRIP TECHNICOLOR NO LESS)...SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN 14 THEN......AND SHE WENT ON TO A LONG MOVIE CAREER AND MADE MANY TV GUEST SPOTS UP TO HER DEATH IN 1976....

The chorus girl at 2:46 is Fox's frowniest. She can be spotted in a several Fox musicals around this time. Unlike the other girls, she can barely crack a smile. She does the same thing in THE DOLLY SISTERS made a few months later.

You've certainly got a keen eye, Songplugger! Guess you've been studying those chorus girls real close! Good comment and I have to say I agree with you! Lol.

Looks like everyone’s having fun. However dance numbers like this require a huge amount of rehearsals, camera blocking, makeup, set construction, costuming, lightning, color testing (the list us endless)- as well as long shooting days.

You are absolutely right, Rowby! The work involved takes weeks of rehearsal and planning, as you point out. People say "Oh, it's just a musical' as if that puts it into a lower class of movie. In my estimation, musicals are some of the most difficult to stage. When you think that every move is being captured on a gigantic screen with every possible mistake magnified hundreds of times it is amazing how talented the stars back then were....and how dedicated to their craft! You mention the hours and hours of rehearsal needed before even a camera is mounted. That requires dedication....and most had it in spades...I say 'most' because we know of the stars that had to be cajoled into action! Thanks so much for your input here, Rowdy. Good to receive some positive and informative feedback.

this was a great clip. i really enjoyed it up till about 2:30 then they started with some off the wall "fashion" show that really did nothing for the number. quite the contrary, it detracted from it with it's over the top, unrelatable, unrealistic, and rather ridiculous...garb, for lack of a better word. of course things picked up after the costume change but they shoulda went with a more authentic costume for those beautiful girls to perhaps do a bit of a dance number. cause the idiotic costumes took as much time, if not more, to deal with (much less make) than those girls learning a few movements for the 45 seconds or so until the change was complete. the best thing woulda been to just stay in costume and shorten the number and keep the awesome flow that was going flawlessly until then. thanks for posting none the less cause betty was amazing.

It makes me laugh how they mix tango, spanish dances...tap, in a "mexican" number.
