My dad was a 17 year old cellist for conductor Alfred Newman on the soundtrack here. Never got back into music after the war and passed in 1992 after I graduated college. Played behind Sinatra too on Hit Parade Radio Broadcasts. Thanks for the upload.

Why, oh why, can’t they make beautiful movies like this anymore? I loved every moment. I wasn’t even a glint in my parent’s eyes in 1945, but I completely identify with the 1940’s. I love the music. I love the fashions. I love the furs. I love the beauty of it all. Women today just don’t get it.

Betty was something else. Back in the day, studios knew exactly the kind of escapist entertainment people wanted - lush tunes, gorgeous, over-the-top costumes...it is such fun to look at these and giggle. But this also has a great roster of talents - Alfred Newman, (Uncle of Randy) music director...George Seaton directing.. and Beatrice Kay is absolutely terrific. What a fun movie....

Harry Warren is the most underrated of Songbook tunesmiths IMO. I would put him at the very top of the second division, just below the Big Four (Gershwin, Berlin, Porter, Kern) but up with Nacio Herb Brown, Rodgers, Arlen and Youmans. Glad to see Harry now has a fan club pushing him.

Definitely imitating Sinatra in his spot with the band. Frank was cresting his first wave of popularity, screamed over by bobbysoxers and even hoofing with Gene Kelly. Soon Johnnie Ray would outdo everyone in the sob stakes. Haymes fell somewhere between Sinatra's swing and Ray's soppiness.

After "When my baby smiles at me" [1948],. Diamond Horseshoe is my 2nd best Betty Grable movie. A intelligent narrative that teaches you why education is so very important in life. A young man practicing medicine decides to abandon his career as a doctor for one in show business as a singer. But, it takes a strong woman to guide him and realize his true calling. Dick Haymes plays the aspiring doctor and Betty Grable the intelligent dancer. Packed with lovely songs and dances by the most successful blonde star, 20th Century Fox ever had, Betty Grable is a dream in Technicolor entertaining the audience with Welcome to the Diamond Horseshoe, Acapulco [my top fave], I wish I knew, You'll never know. Dick Haymes too chips in with her golden voice giving us a treat to those hit numbers: The more I see you and I wish I knew. I must stick my neck by writing that though Marilyn Monroe got top billing in How to marry a millionaire, it was the Fox Queen, Betty Grable who pleased critics and walked away with all the acting plaudits.

Years ago I read Harry James biography. His band in the late 30s was first to hire Frank Sinatra, but after only a year or so, he agreed to let Sinatra out of the contract to go to Tommy Dorsey band. Harry James was married to Betty Grable for several years, but his gambling and drinking ruined the marriage. Dick Haynes was the lead singer after Sinatra was released. He and Betty had affairs for awhile too.
